There is an outdoor patio with chairs, tables, and a grill, as well as a smaller deck on the upstairs level. Within a half hour of sitting outside in June, I saw goldfinches, a blue jay, and a hummingbird. There is a huge communal kitchen, full sized fridge, stove/oven, and bins you can label with your name to keep food in. Previous travelers had left perfectly good food so between that and our own groceries, we made quite a few meals here. We stayed in a private room (accessibility note: private rooms are up a flight of stairs). Our room had a double bed, two nightstands with lamps, a standing fan, a closet area with hangers, and a window. The upstairs common area and bathroom were shared with a couple staying in the other private room. Clean towels, hand soap, and a hairdryer were provided. The common area has couches, board games, and a big dining room table. One minor, minor quibble: our bed had 2 total pillows and we are both double pillow people. I probably could have asked but I was tired from our travels and didn't bother. Yes, you do have to wash your own dishes but if you're looking for a budget-friendly place that's also clean, this is it. I paid $207 CAD for two nights which is about $75 USD per night. An absolute steal for a great place to stay.

We found it on purpleroofs.com and we were very lucky to have discovered it. We were visiting my partner's nephew who was working on an organic farm on PEI for the summer and our stay at Maple Hill was an added and unexpected pleasure. We had never been to PEI before and did not know what to expect. Mike and Paul are the proprietors and they could not have done more to make our visit more perfect. Their guest house is nestled on the side of a wonderfully landscaped hill with expansive and private views of the green and plush countryside. We stayed in a beautifully converted barn that was spacious, decorated and incredibly comfortable. Their flower garden is absolutely stunning (Paul is a landscape architect) and the "Pidgeonnair" (a little room house located on a private end of the farm) was great for yoga, meditation or just relaxing in a private area. They actually farm and have several cows so the experience was absolutely complete. Breakfast was superb and we had a traditional lobster dinner (the other choice was a harvest farm dinner), that could not be beat. We also enjoyed their company and they even invited us to a concert in a nearby town (in an old church), which just made the trip all the more complete. Stunning, spectacular, fun, quiet, peaceful, beautiful and everything in between. I highly, highly recommend Maple Hill Guest House not only when visiting PEI but also as a destination. I love old inns. I choose them over faceless hotels whenever I can, for their character and charm…read more I understand that inns don't usually offer all the amenities of a hotel. But even in light of that, the Antigonish Victorian Inn, though charming, was a huge disappointment. Building is beautiful, at least what you can see of it. There are no sitting rooms, salons, or public areas of any kind. Everything is closed up. No breakfast room, not even coffee in the morning. My room was beautiful, apparently the nicest in the inn. But no working TV and, worst of all, NO HOT WATER. What kind of inn has no hot water? I was in Antigonish for a business conference and couldn't even get the water warm enough for a cold shower. The room wasn't cheap, over $200 per night. It really feels like the owners are trying to operate this business by spending as little money as possible. And in the hospitality industry, that just won't work. Never again!

A Warm Welcome to Baddeck - We'll Be Back!…read more After six mornings of B&B/hotel breakfasts on our Nova Scotia stay, we were happy to choose a self-catering option in Baddeck, giving us the flexibility to eat on our own schedule and grab a bite to eat in the town. Willie's The Worn Doorstep was just what we wanted, and then more. Our suite was more of an apartment with the choice of two queen beds, a fairly large living room area with a kitchenette and verandah. Our room faced away from the street, and it was quiet with no traffic noise.The suite was clean, bright, nicely furnished, with comfortable beds, and a short stroll into town, making it an easy recommendation for others. We also sat upstairs on the roof deck, to enjoy the July weather and the views. But what made The Worn Doorstep an extra special stay for us was the kindness and hospitality of Willie and Gina. We were given a warm Scottish welcome (genuine - Willie is a Glaswegian, transplanted to Canada many years ago). Willie was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about Baddeck, gave lots of advice when we asked for local information, and shared many entertaining and interesting stories. Will return for more!

It is well set back and elevated from the main road, which in any case is never busy. There is ample free parking and it is entirely smoke-free. If you like rugged coastlines and fishing villages, this is the place for you (although there is beach nearby). Many rooms/units have a view of the bay. The proprietor grew up in the community, moved away, and returned, and is well-connected with the community. She lives in the Inn and is only a phone call away. She knows all the special places to explore. When we visited, breakfast was a satisfying continental buffet, with cereal, fruit, pastries, boiled eggs, yoghurt, toast, etc. There is no other regular meal service, but everyone recommends the Groundswell pub in nearby D'Escouse, a relaxing 10-minute drive away (at night, drive slowly and watch out for deer!). Although the building is old, the inn rooms are fresh and comfortable with all the conveniences. Each room has independent heat (no A/C but you would rarely need it--the screened windows open easily for fresh ocean breezes). You could not find a better place to stay in Isle Madame. If you are looking for a spot to host a family reunion or hold a small conference in a rural setting, this is the place!

What a memorable B&B! We spent a night in the chalet and were delighted with the accommodations…read more Lot's of fresh air flowing through to keep us comfortable ... and a great place to watch the sunset. As you approach the property, watch carefully for the signs on either side of the street. They come up on you quickly when arriving from the south. Then go up the gravel road to the top of the hill. Take a moment to look back and enjoy the view of the hills and ocean in the distance. Very pretty location. I loved the fact that this property is still slightly out of town, so we got country ambience but could be in the city center within just a few minutes. Veronica is what put this place into the fifth star for us. What a delightful (and talented) host! She prepared a stellar breakfast (if you leave hungry it's your own fault) and entertained us with her stories ... of which she has many. Take time to look at her paintings. Amazingly, she is completely self-taught! When I made my booking, I was curious about the choice of name for this B&B. Ask Veronica to tell you the story, but in a nutshell, her husband used to make their living by taking tourists on deer hunting trips. At some point in the past, the deer population plummeted and that industry faded away ... and the couple entered the B&B business. Veronica's way of telling the story is much better.

The A/C works well when you are in the room. The shower had full-sized bottles and was very powerful and the hot water was fast. The beds are very comfortable. We enjoyed our stay so much.
