We loved our stay at Whispering Elms! They fulfilled our two main requirements- full RV hookups and super friendly staff! It's only a few minutes drive from the Great Basin entrance. We would definitely stay here again. Not to mention the burger restaurant on property that's open on weekends is BOMB. I'm not sure where any negative reviews are coming from, maybe those people are use to staying at luxury rv resorts. For us, Whispering Elms was perfect! read more

The motel has been updated to modern 2026 style. Still basic. At entrance to the Nat. Park. It has AC unit on wall, cut on and off all night long. Has a bar and a food truck that only serves hamburgers. Good though. There is a border Casino 7 mi away that serves a larger menu. They also have a similar motel(from outside) that is less expensive. read more

We were hesitant to book this place based on the reviews, but we took the chance anyway because it was close to the national park. During our stay there, the owner was very nice to let us modify our reservation from three to two days. He guided us to our site and went about his day. The rv park does look run down, but for the most part, clean and tidy. Laundry room was well maintained and working. The town alone is very small and quiet but there's a sense of peace when staying there. At night, the rv park is almost pitch black so you're able to see the stars very well. read more

This place is like a horror movie but in real life. It's a bait and switch the pictures on the website DO NOT represent what it's really like. The place is run down the whispering elms don't whisper cause they are mostly dead. The buildings on site are broken down and unkept. The owner or manager looks like an escapee from a homeless camp, at night he runs around screaming at the campers. This was a one night stop for us on our way up to Yellowstone, so we absolutely would not expect the nines out of a small family owned park like this one. Staff were nice to us, I think had we had the experience others had -- I would understand their rating, but we didn't. They were super kind and a young boy led us to our site when we arrived. It's a bit old and yes there are some run down looking buildings, but I think that's just the vibe of Baker. This is absolutely the worst place I've ever stayed in my life. Came for a family reunion to reconnect and all we got was hate from the owner Chuck. He has zero concept of pleasantness or hospitality. He berated me and all our family whenever a dog unexpectedly ran out of the our trailer. Traveling is always stressful, especially with pets. They always came when called and no harm was ever done. If you have dogs never come here. The staff were friendly. This is a rustic RV resort and our site had an electrical problem. If not for our watchdog surge protector it would have done some damage. The staff knew about it but it wasn't cost effective to have anyone come from Ely to fix it. Our military discount was not applied. It is very close to Great Basin National Park. read more

Even though there are limited options in and around Baker and Great Basin National Park I would NOT recommend staying here. The "manager on duty" had the absolute worst attitude, was rude and threatened to report our dogs to animal control if they barked because "he didn't want to deal with it". On top of that, him or one of his adult children pounded on the door of our camper in the middle of the night out of spite (the campground was pretty empty so there were very few options as to who it was). Beyond his miserable attitude and just overall rude demeanor the bathrooms had no paper towels or soap and the trash cans were overflowing with trash. To top it all off, the place is inundated with flies, we got in our truck to leave (early, because we didn't want to be around this place anymore) and after having the doors of our truck open for only 10 minutes there were about 20-30 flies in the cab of the truck. If there are no other options I recommend sleeping on the side of the road somewhere before staying here. read more

For any National Parks gurus out there, this is the place to stay when visiting desolate Great Basin NP. Incredible.....when I visited here back in July, wow.....the town of Baker is so small. It's virtually a quarter of a block long. This Whispering Elms Motel & RV Park is situated right along the road just before town. I stayed here for 2 nights and was quite pleased with everything about this place. Just to back up a little....Great Basin National Park is hard to travel to. It's situated here in Baker.....in the middle of nowhere in Eastern Nevada (let's just say quite a way's away from the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas, lol). So for those looking to traverse and check Great Basin off their list's.....I hope no one will mind if I include an itinerary I used for not only navigating here, but making an efficient week long journey and vacation. I flew into Salt Lake City and rented a car (it was the most accessible and affordable airport and car rental) and then drove about 220 miles to arrive in Baker. I spent my first evening here at Whispering Elms after all my traveling for the entire day. I checked into the office/restaurant and my motel room was located in the back right in front of the RV Yard and Campground. This place was small, yet very cozy and accommodating. I'd say the motel strip was only 6 rooms long. In front of my room there was a little hammock where I sat down for a few moments soaking up the outdoors setting. It was nice and especially when I returned to my room after dinner, I sat down on this hammock and looked up at the stars in the sky. I was truly surprised how clean and well put together my motel room was. I didn't have much expectations, yet the room appeared quite rustic and homely. Basically....it was awesome! And I was happy I chose to stay here (regardless...that there's virtually not many other places to stay in Baker, lol). Included in my room, I had.....a king sized bed, television, table, desk, mini-fridge, microwave, a/c & heater unit, plenty of space to spread out and unpack, a clean shower with good running hot water and towels. It was $67 per night...rather cheap for this day and age. I did book reservations well in advance, almost 6 months ahead of time! (Yeah, I was nervous about the limited accommodations in the area and wanted to feel secure that I was guaranteed a place to stay) Waking up the next morning, I slowly strolled into town at 7am and had breakfast at the quaint restaurant, Kerouac's. This was a fine place to eat and get my day started. Also, T & D's has a restaurant in baker as well (though not the accessible hours like Kerouac's) including a grocery store. I spent this entire next day exploring, hiking and wandering around Great Basin National Park. Then...instead of continuing on with my itinerary....I decided to take my time and spent a second evening here at Whispering Elms. The following morning.....after having a good night's rest....I resumed my journey. Included in my travels for the next week, starting from here in Baker....I drove the iconic 400 mile "Loneliest road in America" across the entire state of Nevada, spent 1 day in Reno and cowboy town...Virginia City, 2 days in Lake Tahoe, 1 day venturing into California and Lassen Volcanic National Park, and finally an entire day driving all the way back to Salt Lake City. In all....it was a great voyage and gave me the opportunity to visit a bunch of places I had marked on my "to do list" that I was able to check off. Finally, yes...Whispering Elms Motel & RV Park was the ideal place for me to stay while discovering lonely Great Basin National Park. You can basically say it's the starting point! And....with the town of Baker being so quiet and "off the grid"....I certainly have and will keep fond memories from my time touring this tucked away section of the country. read more

The staff here are amazing and friendly. The guy with the long grey hair and beard was funny and kind. The motel room was perfect for us. We were out for the day and came in to crash. The bed isn't super comfortable but it is just a place to crash for the night. We did have a Roku for entertainment while we were trying to fall asleep. I liked it here. read more

We stayed at the motel: Planning a trip to Great Basin National Park to capture some epic night-sky photography, we scoured reviews and decided on the Stargazer Inn for two nights. Their website mentioned that reservations had to be made the old-fashioned way: by calling them directly. No problem! Over three days in early September, I gave it my best shot, but no dice--just endless ringing. Ring, ring, ring. When we stopped by the small store attached to the motel, I mentioned the no-answer situation to the woman (possibly the owner?). She seemed genuinely puzzled. "Huh, wonder who was working that day," she mused. Considering we were in the middle of nowhere, I had my suspicions it was her on duty. The few rooms we saw didn't seem occupied either. No idea what the deal was, but onward we went! So, we moved on to the next option: The Whispering Elms. This place had online reservations (already a plus) with a confirmation and pay-upon-arrival policy. Perfect. For two nights, it was $313--a reminder that when you're this far out in the desert, choices are limited, and prices are, well, reflective of that. When we rolled up, the "Bar - Restaurant" in the front was closed, with a note instructing us to call for check-in. No big deal--the owner promptly called us back and offered to let us drop our gear in the room early if we wanted. Later, when we returned, I met a friendly (though slightly gruff) gentleman at the bar who handled the check-in. The motel itself is tucked behind an RV lot, so don't let that throw you. Driving past the campers, we reached a small building with six rooms. And surprise! The room was spotless, with modern decor, a comfy bed, couch, desk, fridge, microwave, coffee maker, toiletries, hair dryer, extra blankets and pillows, Wi-Fi, and even a Roku TV. We felt right at home. Best of all, we set up our cameras just a couple of miles away at the Baker Archaeological Site, one of the darkest spots in the lower 48 states--ideal for anyone hoping to catch the Milky Way in all its glory. In short, we'd absolutely recommend the Whispering Elms. Online reservations, pay-on-site, warm and comfy rooms. Sure, the guy at the bar had a bit of a gruff vibe, but hey, at least we weren't stuck with unanswered calls! One last tip: since this place is truly isolated, stock up on any "supplies" before you head out. There's a small store nearby, but be prepared for desert prices. Need breakfast or lunch? The young couple managing the place really treated us right. I got a little senior discount so our tent site was only $20. They also gave us a really good deal on drinks at the bar. The weather was super intense, with a sandstorm/windstorm and a little rain, so we didn't pitch the tent, but slept in the back of our station wagon, just steps from the restrooms. Very nice bathrooms with warm showers. Everyone else was RV'ing so we had the shared bathrooms pretty much to ourselves. Would have liked to say "thank you" to the young folks in the morning but the road called and we headed out early. If we find ourselves in Baker again, I know where we'll be staying!! Good lord what an awful place. Just because they are near a National Park when reserving over the Internet you shrug & accept their unusually high room charge thinking well maybe it will be a nice spot to come back down from the heights of Mt. Wheeler to relax for the sunset. When I first drove in, junk everywhere, the premises looked forlorn & abandoned, and I was shocked to be informed (on the phone, I never actually met the management) that my room was in a decrepit building in back that appeared uninviting & miserable. Upon entering, I'd never seen such a filthy carpet in my life, almost a stereotype of a smelly cheap motel room. I recommend staying overnight in Ely. read more

When we were unable to get one of the limited campsites available in Great Basin National Park, we decided to stay here because it was a few minutes away. There are not fire pits available at every site like it says on the website or picnic tables. Just called this place to make a reservation in June to visit Great Basin NP. The man that answered the call was the rudest person I have ever encountered. I asked him what was available and he said he had a few spots with no sewer. I wanted to know what their cancellation policy was and he said it was on the website. I told him I couldn't find it after searching everywhere and wanted him to show me where it was. He said, "Listen do you want to reserve a spot?" I said I did but wanted see the cancellation policy on the website and again asked him to show me where it is. He got irritated with me telling me he didn't have time to deal with me and hung up on me!!! I didn't call back and have no desire to stay at Whispering Elms. He lost my business!! The rooms haven't changed since 1970. My room heater had to be lit by hand (old school gas wall heater). If you like musty rooms, cobwebs in your bathroom, lumpy beds, dog poop hopscotch and a manager from Mars. This is your place. read more

Stayed a couple nights on the way to Bryce. Sadly the RV park is in need of a lot of work. It's surrounded by sketchy buildings and junk. The owner and I got into a bit of an altercation on our way out. My young son was being an eight year old and dropped a small rock down an open sewer pipe. Admittedly he shouldn't have, but he's also a child. The owner saw this and started yelling at him. I was about 30 feet away hooking up my rig. He came right up to me, no mask, and started yelling and generally had a melt down. He told me he I would have to pay for repairs to which I agreed. He continued to rant and rave like a mad man. Fearing for the safety of my children, I quickly finished hooking up and left. The second we started driving I got an alert for a $150 "repair" charge. The place is sketchy and the owner is a mad raving lunatic. Stay away. read more

There was zero camping in the park due to smoke/fire evacuees so we were lucky to get their last room - just me and my 5 year old daughter. The owners checked us in at the bar and the beer selection was great! The room is very clean and good size. Has a microwave and fridge and being that it's the only motel around the price ($80) was very fair - I've paid way more and got way less! The selection is very limited near Great Basin NP. This park really needs some upgrading. The website and paperwork says $35 for over 35 foot RV, yet they charge you $40. Knowing the current limitations and demands on travel, I booked our family's reservation for a critical stay at Whispering Elms SEVEN MONTHS IN ADVANCE via their dedicated online system, and received a confirmation number and written acknowledgment of our accurate reservation at that time. Six days before our arrival, Whispering Elms sent me an email directly as a confirmation of our stay--but, they showed a different date than my actual reservation. Organized and conscientious, I immediately called the campground and explained our discrepancy in dates on their voicemail, requesting a call back or a further email, which never arrived. Concerned, I continued to call, then finally reached a gentleman who identified himself as the owner who proceeded to yell and argue that I was "wrong" and he had "no spots to put [us], this conversation is over. What part of that don't you understand!?" I was not allowed to reply before he hung up the phone. Obviously, given the remote location of Great Basin NP, and the extensive cross country driving we are about to embark upon, this put us in an untenable position despite the extensive pre-planning and previous written confirmations received from the site half a year in advance. It seems unfortunate that a business so uncompromising, blaming, unethical, and hostile should operate to offer more hope to well-planned travelers who aim to share our great national parks with their families in difficult times. The world is hard enough without getting yelled at and hung up upon having done literally nothing wrong beyond seeking to fulfill an agreed upon contact. I understand that the transaction amount for rv camping is minimal to this man. He was clear that neither I, nor my business, or the real difficulties his error created, were of any concern or consideration. Mistakes happen, but mistreatment is a choice. From one consumer to another, please do anything you can to NOT engage with this business owner. Though options are limited, do not exposure yourself to such unpleasant and degrading disregard in pursuit of a family vacation! read more

Decent enough RV park if you would like to be near the entrance of Great Basin National Park. Some of the spots are oddly organzied with only one picnic table to share between two spots that face eachother...good if you are traveling with another RV/trailer and want to hang out, not good if the people next to you are strangers and you are looking for some privacy. Also, the website advertised WiFi but when we arrived they gave us a flyer with info about the park and it informed us that the WiFi was out...I have a feeling it has been out for a long while, and will continue to be, but they don't want to remove it from their website and potentially discourage travelers from staying with them. This was back in August 2020 when we stayed so maybe it's up and running again now? If it's important to you I suggest calling first and asking. All in all not a bad experience, but not anything to brag about either. read more

I'm giving this all 5 stars because it is great for what it is. It's a rustic road-side motel with RV and tent sites. My wife and I and the dogs stayed in one of the motel rooms. It was spacious, clean, and had everything we needed. The entire site was clean and well maintained. If you're looking for a chain motel, you won't find it here. Karen, the site manager, was very friendly and helpful. Her husband Chuck was also very helpful, especially in getting the pilot light lit on a cold fall night. it was actually kind of cool that they had a nice little bar on site, open 4:30pm-8:30pm. The bar was full size, there was a pool table, and a couple TVs. Overall, it was a nice relaxing experience. This place, and the town in general, is on the outskirts of the middle of nowhere, just outside the Great Basin National Park and Lehman Caves. It's a nice place to visit, but be aware that the entire area is rather sparse, with very little around it. But as I said before, for the money, it was a good deal and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I would recommend it to anyone who might be traveling to see the Lehman Caves. On a separate but related note, if you do get hungry, I highly recommend the Border Inn, about 7 miles away on Highway 50, right on the Nevada/Utah boarder. The food there is actually quite good and the best you will find within at least 80 miles. Did I mention this area was in the middle of nowhere? Yeah, that's why Highway 50 is known as the nation's "Loneliest Highway." read more

The charm of this place is it's rustic nature. The property is surrounded by long abandoned log cabins,out buildings and farm equipment. There is a clothes line outside of the laundry room. I took advantage of the opportunity to use it. Whispering Elms brought back fond memories of grandparents farm life. Please do not expect a RV resort. This is not that kind of park. There is free Wi-Fi but goes in and out. This is a remote area and the Wi-Fi is an issue through out.We stayed a total of 3 nights. One night we chose to rent a room in the small motel that is part of the property. We were traveling with three children in a 19 ft travel trailer. The room could use some updates but was spacious and very clean. The managers were friendly and accommodating. They are an asset to The Whispering Elms. We will return to The Great Basin National Park and again stay at The Whispering Elms. read more

When I made my reservation I made it here because of other people's reviews. And I'm glad I did. The people that run this place are hard working people like the rest of us. Yes it might have outdated decor but the beds are comfortable and clean. The bathrooms are nice and clean. And the people that run this place are nice and will stop to talk with you or do what they can to make your stay comfortable. I've stayed in places that were a lot more updated but could care less if my stay was a good one. I felt safe and it was quiet here. My room was clean and they had no problem that I had a little furry one along for the ride. I'll definitely be coming back to stay. Thank you for a great place to come to. read more

Driving across country we stayed here because of it's convenience to visit the caverns. Simple, no frills, clean and inexpensive. Overall it was fine, but in retrospect we probably would have stayed at a closer place that had dining facilities. A few hundred miles away I realized I had left my memory foam pillow there. After calling, the person I spoke to on the phone did not call me back. When I called again she said she had lost my number. She then said the maids informed her there was no pillow left in the room implying it was my mistake. There is no question about me leaving it in the room. I know exactly when and where I left it. Someone is enjoying a very expensive pillow that is not theirs right now, especially a bummer because I tipped the maids and gave them a gps system I didn't want anymore in case they could put it to use. :-( read more

I am a great enthusiast of simple local little motels. Only meth heads for neighbors, utter filth, and/or bedbugs are beyond my tolerance. We stayed here because we read reviews that the other place in town has bedbugs in some rooms. About the Whispering Elms... It's basically unattended, the owner wants to sell. The cleaning is indifferent, but it's one step above slovenly. Beautiful setting beneath the elms, ok little trailer rooms. Went to sleep enjoying the funky charm, woke at 4 am with bug bites. Yes, bedbug bites, with their excruciating endless painful itch. Only found one grand-daddy bug to kill. Squished him in kleenex and tossed the nasty wad behind the TV. Room #6, given the housekeeping he's probably still there. The worst of bedbugs is decontaminating all your belongings so you don't bring them home, so the rest of our trip was under the shadow of infestation. read more

Good value for a great location minutes from Great Basin National Park. Free wifi works ok even in the motel rooms (which are in the back of the property). Clean rooms, decent towels, bedding is like new. Good AC. Prompt response to requests for extra towels, etc. Room #1 has a comfortable king bed, and our kid had no complaints about the sofa bed (queen size). Lots of storage space (closet, drawers, cabinets). There was a vaguely wet-dog smell that dissipated after 10 minutes with the front door open (though you don't want to sniff the sofa cushions too closely). There are bugs--indoors. Tip: leave the bathroom light on overnight to keep them occupied. There were NO mosquitos, flies, bedbugs or cockroaches. Except for roaches and bugs that bite or have more than 8 legs, I believe in live-and-let-live. The shag carpet makes it easy to scoop a stray beetle into a cup to return to the outdoors. Look for hummingbirds at the several feeders on site. The bar on site has outdoor tables and welcoming dive-y vibe. The Great Basin Visitor Center is less than a mile up the road. On a clear night before the moon rises, go to the back of the parking lot to see all the stars that appear when you get away from artificial lights. We even saw the Milky Way here last night. We paid less than $130 (including tax) total for 2 nights. read more

There are not many options if you are going to Wheeler Peak or the east side of Great Basin National Park. I was originally booked on the other option, but a snafu on my reservation sent me scrambling for a way to accommodate wife and kids. The office of this business is in the bar on the street, they have half a dozen rooms that are clean, functional and inexpensive. Our had a fridge and a microwave. The place has wi-fi, however it wasn't working too good and I had to help myself with somebody leaving his access point open. I would certainly come here again next time I visit the park read more

Nicely run, secure and clean well kept grounds, close to the Great Basin National Park and Lehman Caves. A bootleg RV park in a backyard set-up, pay no mind to that, it works quite well. Most the time you'll need a reservation. You call,, leave your number and they will eventually call you back. Owner is a CBS Newsman Charles Kuralt separated-at-birth twin in looks and voice. Worth the stay just to meet him. May be a bit tricky parking your RV with all the trees, so a spotter or the owner will gladly guide you in. Motel rooms are simple but nicely kept and cheap. Full cocktail bar that may or may not open at 4PM each day, owners sweet as sugar wife usually the bartender. All kinds of characters come to the bar at night out of the wilderness, and they bring all their critters with them, and always some sort of pot luck kinda food items. Every business in the area is for sale,, so pay no mind to that either. read more

For Baker NV, a community of 85 permanent residents, this is a rustic but great motel very close to Great Basin NP. We were pleasantly surprised when we had a television, small refrigerator, coffee pot and microwave in the room plus there was a roll-away bed in the closet. The room was very clean and well maintained. The beds were comfortable. Bags of ice were free from the manager in the bar. A picnic table at the end of the motel was a great place to view the night sky especially in the wee hours of the morning and the picnic table in front of the bar provided nice viewing for the sunset. We appreciated the management had quiet hours as the campers were very close to the motel rooms. Kerouac's restaurant is a short walk away and fabulous. read more

The pull out looked like it hadn't been used for a few years, but my 8 yr old son seemed to like it. The owners were nice, but the place was up for sale, the bar and the RV park both had for sale signs up. Great wifi signal, great direct tv in the room. No phone in the room. The ac was terrible. Great access to downtown Baker, post office and restaurants and Great Basin Park, Lehmann Caves. Would stay there again. We paid around $65/nt. read more

They should make a horror movie about this place and the host could play the lunatic murderer, it wouldn't be much of a stretch. The room was filthy and worn out, right inside the door there were exposed carpet tacks. The door would not latch properly, nor would it lock so I had to move the nightstand in front of the door for some level of security. We booked the room through booking.com so the managers had all of our credit card information. We left very early the next morning because we had a long day on the road to get home and about two hours into the drive my wife got a call on her cell phone and it was the manager, he was flipping out telling us that we left without paying. Every other word was the "F" word and he threatened to "ruin our credit". When we got home I called and got it sorted out through booking.com. We actually get a kick out it when we remember the 12 hours of insanity now that it's a distant memory. Crazy things happen in the lonely desert! read more

Owner runs a beer joint in the afternoons/evenings. Owner seems to do everything by himself. Good place to camp at when visiting Great Basin National Park which is just a few miles away. read more
