Just a few minutes detour from the main A31 carriageway between Southampton/London will transport you to a whole new world. Be prepared to set your watch back a few decades at least and also to lose access to all forms of modern communication. If there was a parallel universe to Hobbiton & the Shire then Bilbo, Samwise and the rest of the hairy feet tribe would surely be living in this neck of the woods. Tucked away on the outskirts of Burley main village with a hideaway entrance which screams 'Country House' styleee is where you will find yourself. This spot is a gem and as far as location and accommodation go it would be difficult to beat. Food is freshly prepared (in most cases) but the overall menu is limited. The breakfast is probably where they excel and the 'cosy' room (their euphemism for cheapest abode) they provided for me was just the ticket. Having previously spent a few nights elsewhere in the area it was not difficult to spot the attention to detail which has been applied here. The Hans Grohe taps alone speak volumes for the the level of quality in the build. I could find not a single fault and actually found myself giggling with glee at even the books provided on the bedside tables. I will let the picture i posted speak for themselves ... oh and btw watch out for the New Forest Ponies wandering freely speshully in the AM as they tend to wander along the roadsides chomping up the verges, i kid you not ! The downside, yep there is always a downside ... No mobile phone reception for my 02 and their internet service is chronic. Connection to WiFi router is fine but the gateway out to t'internet is around 3 bytes an hour. This is not a place for those who like to twitter twatter their life away... #nocomms ftr and of no real relevance but how twee is this ... Burley is twinned with Beurlay in France :) read more

http://www.fullershotels.com/rte.asp?id=128 Sitting in a fantastic setting in the New Forest, this pub/restaurant is a gem. There's always a huge choice of specials on the board, focussed on locally produced fayre. It's well prepared and arrives in good quantities. There's a good range of real ales, and a good choice of wines too. So go for a walk in the New Forest, and then enjoy drinks and dinner. read more

Great pub, restaurant and hotel. Wonderful setting. The staff are excellent and attentive. The food is mostly locally sourced. The hotel is small with themed rooms and the beds are sooooo comfortable. UPDATE: Here for Beer Festival weekend and so far brilliant again. Great beers, guest ales and hog roast. One more day to go. read more

I went to the newly renovated White Buck on Friday night for dinner and it's was so enjoyable we had to return on Saturday for lunch! They've done a good job - the forest needs more places like this. read more
