Ask the Community - White Deer Run

Do men and women work in the kitchen together?

No men work in the kitchen mostly because there is more men than women in this facility the ratio is about 2:1

This is the worst place ever! I went there to learn how to become clean and sober. And left there…read moreneither. There are more drugs and BS then there is on the street. They treat you like you are beneath them. And 80 % of staff is in recovery. I was hit on by the man of runs the dining room area ( this is staff mind you ) I actually left there with his phone number. So my ratings goes as follows. 1) I would not go there unless you were absolutely desperate and cannot get a bed nowhere else if anything it's a place to get off the streets for a couple of days. 2) cleanliness . Unless you do it yourself I remember asking one of the housekeepers if they could clean my bathroom. Their response to me was how clean was the bathroom you were using on the street? Then I was told they would get to it that they were understaffed it's my understanding they've been understaffed for a long time. And you have to beg for toilet paper and tissues. And if you show up there and your bed is not made good luck getting bedding my pillow did not have a pillowcase I asked for one they told me when they made the bed there was one on it and no I could not have another one. Little do they know my life and addiction was not spent on the street I really think they need to educate some of their employees. Food wise I don't recommend dining at white deer run lol they feed you things for example breakfast would be pop tarts cereal and either a blueberry muffin or chocolate muffin. The people in the kitchen are obviously not qualified dietary people. And when you speak out on this again you are asked were you eating out of a dumpster before you got here? Lunch is on bearable the salad bar is the most disgusting thing I've ever seen they used canned carrots green beans the lettuce had pieces of this and that in it. I really wish I could've took pictures. Sometimes dinner was OK it was edible. But you could bet whatever you had for dinner you will have for lunch the next day just mixed with something different as in a sauce or something nothing is fresh when I asked about it they said they are on a budget pretty much eat and like it. If you ask for healthy choice you get the same thing repeatedly some kind of vegetables with all kinds of seasoning and butter on it big hunks of beef again like I said you can tell they have no education and dietary. When I spoke with the supervisor which you can do He apparently thought I was cute LOL he was giving me whatever I wanted in the morning I left I went in for coffee and he gave me his phone number. Yes ridiculous. Counselors. I was in women's unit 25 the supervisor there is male And I must tell you I hold the upmost respect for him very professional non-judge mental pulls no punches type of person The female counselors I just don't know what to say they are not that educated themselves. I am a grown woman with an addiction problem I did not come from the street I am educated and I worked. So when you give me a coloring book and crayons and tell me it's therapeutic no I don't think it is it makes you feel like you're being treated like an idiot. Or when you control when I can go to the bathroom or not or whether I can have a cup of coffee or not. There is nothing therapeutic about that. So I have to say in general there is nothing good about white deer run their higher ups need to come down to the trenches and really see what's going on. A lot of things are covered up and that is sad because the facility itself sits on a beautiful mountain. And each building has potential to be very nice so it would be a great place to start your recovery if they would educate their staff a bit more really get a grip on the cleaning and the food. If they did that I would strongly recommend going there but at this point in time I would have to say you're wasting whether it be county funding or self-pay or insurance you're wasting the money and your time

He never even attempted to try understand what I was experiencing. He was always interrupting, telling stories and laughing at his own jokes. This guy did a pom pom cheer for me once when I did something outside my comfort zone. I am 40. That was humiliating and invalidating. He compared my experiences to other clients that he had. For example when I tried to talk a bout my anxiety issues he would tell me a story about another client who had anxiety and what it was about and how he helped her. Great. Except her anxieties were not the same as my anxieties. Anxiety isn't just the same across the board. People experience anxiety for many many different reasons. I could have overlooked that except he told me the story of this client like 4 or 5 times as if it was the very first time I was hearing it and again it had nothing to do with my personal experience. I could not listen to this man tell me that story one more time in an attempt to pretend he understood what I was talking about. Very nice guy overall but just wow.
