We arrived at the location over looking the Solway Firth and made our way inside. We gave our name and were shown to a table that had such a delightful view of the Firth. We looked at the menus, including the specials one, and chose our starters and mains. The Potato leeke soup that was offered up on the menu and some ham croquettes. When they came to the table, the soups were in these deep, elegant bowls and was absolutely scrumptious. The three little ham pockets were delivered in the most picturesque way, and tasted divine. Our mains were just as fabulous. Two of us ordered the Burger, with Lockerbie cheddar, onion rings and a side of chips and coleslaw. The other of our party ordered the Chicken and Haggis pie with red cabbage. When the food was delivered they were all incredibly appetizing looking. Our burgers were big and juicy, nothing extra needed! The onion rings (4) were large and crispy, the batter so delectable. The chips were great! A nice hard fry on those made them perfect, but sadly the cole slaw was heavy on raw onion and I could not eat it. My friend loved her Haggis and chicken pie, it looked amazing but I was not brave enough to try it. Mea culpa. The ambience and history of this location make it a worth while destination when you're visiting this area of the UK.

There is a vending machine within the hotel if you get peckish or thirsty. Each room is well equiped with tea and coffee making facilities and TV's. There is ample parking outside and the hotel is next to the Solway Gate which is fantastic. This is an excellent priced hotel where kids stay free. The only downside is the hotel does not offer air-conditioning.

For us, it served as a practical way to break up the journey north, and if you need to do just that en route to the highlands then you will find Gretna Hall Hotel within touching distance of the A74M, and it does the basics in a perfunctory manner. Checking in was smooth and efficient, having already booked online and there was ample on-site parking. Our room seemed a million miles from reception along tartan carpeted corridors. Said chamber was host to a rather short bed which I had to push forward a little way from the wall to accommodate my long shanks. The room itself somehow felt a bit cramped and I was relieved to be staying there only the one night. Despite the look of being modernised, I think that was as much a gesture as anything else, with a contemporary and rather urban styled headboard leading the way and fixed to the wall so as to form a bizarre and unjustified centrepiece to the room. The night was humid and the open window allowed the steady stream of traffic on the nearby A74M to gurgle and whoosh across the ripples of my restless sleep. The shower worked. It was in the bath. It got me clean. I dried myself. Skipped breakfast and left. Outside, the 18th century part of the building positively glowed in the Saturday morning sunlight. A postman tumbled past and shadows yawned from the ample branches of trees across the lawn. As we walked to the car, the Old Smithy stood across on the other side of the car park, vying with Gretna Hall for the title of World's Whitest Building. Are the Borders boring in and of themselves or is it just the sheer hard luck of happening to exist between the Highlands and the Lake District, two of the more astonishing parts of the UK?

Their menu was diverse, but there were 4 steaks listed. There were several Indian inspired options, Scampi (which in this case was fried shrimp - not the garlic butter shirmp as we know it) and other fish dishes. And the like. I opted for the 12 oz ribeye, I ordered it Medium Rare. When it arrived, there were peas, carrots, 2 onion rings and a baked potato on the plate as well as the steak, which was a weird amalgam of Med rare and well done. I'm told that folks in the town of Annan tend to eat their steaks hockey puck style. Ah well. Otherwise it tasted Ok.

Great breakfast in the morning too. Free Wi-Fi very useful when away from home. I won't hesitate to use this place again next time I am in the area, and would recommend it.
