Inside it is atmospherically gloomy, necessarily so as it has yet to succumb to the usual improvement of knocking through to make one big, characterless bar this is, to my mind, is a massive plus point. There are two bars, on our visit, an empty public bar and a more used lounge, complete with cosy little reading corner tucked in beside the small bar, complete with settee and bookshelf. Across the room is a large, probably original fire, as there also is in the other bar. There is no car park although the cheap town centre car park is a short walk away and there is free dieabled parking opposite. A small choice of real ales were perfectly fine and the food a good average pub fare. Service was friendly and attentive. I would definitely go there again although probably not until I have sampled the other pubs in beauitiful Chagford.

This pub has several themed bars which are all decorated differently in an olde worlde style with cider presses for tables and antlers for lamps, you can spend all night looking around and the more you look the more strange and unusual things you will spot. The main entrance into the building is built to resemble a stage coach with seating inside it, to the rear, adjoining the building there is a giant boot just like the one out of the nursery rhyme about the old woman who lived in a shoe which houses a slide for the children and adults if you can fit down it!!!! This pub is a MUST for a visit, the owners are very friendly and will tell you the history of the establishment and give you a tour of the various different rooms.

Our cottage in Chulmleigh had a brief paragraph about the Masons Arms and mentioned it was Michelin's 2010 Pub of the Year. Off we went. Stopped by in the afternoon to make reservations for that evening. Enjoyed a nice Cotleigh Tawny bitter while we perused the menu ahead of time. We were delighted with our options from starter to dessert. Couldn't wait for the evening! We arrived for dinner and ordered a drink at the bar. The place is very cozy and staff professional - smiles all around. They are all happy to be there and it really makes the place enjoyable. The Masons Arms was one of my favorite dinner experiences ever. We were brought into a comfy side room with our drinks and handed the menus to review while we munched on complimentary olives, etc. A few minutes later we placed our orders and were left to conversation - which was essentially wondering what would be happening next. The waitress came back and brought us to our little table along the window - where our wine and starter were brought almost as soon as we sat down. Interesting and effective way to do things. Is that common over in the UK? Who cares! Starters: I had the smoked haddock leek and potato soup and she had the chicken liver parfait with chili jam and brioche toast. Both were just sooo astonishingly good. Main: I had the John Dory with clams, butter beans and chive ravioli. Delicious but I think I liked her prosciutto-wrapped monkfish loin with creamed potato in an orange/balsamic sauce. We couldn't stop talking about how good they were. Dessert: We ordered the roasted pineapple pannacotta and the special - chocolate ganache with lime jelly. Both were good and a great end to a great meal. I am not big on sweets but a good dark chocolate hits the spot every time - and the special was really nice. The triangles of lime jelly were a pleasant and delicious surprise, as I didn't think I would care for them. Overall - great meal. Great meal worth every penny - on the high side but well worth it. Of course, we might have gone overboard but it was our holiday! Service was excellent - not one of those places where staff comes by so often it's annoying. They were attentive at just the right times. I will certainly be back should I ever venture anywhere near the Masons Arms again. Great job Mark, Sarah and staff!

Thankfully my dark thoughts were far off the mark! The pub looked so nice, the barmaid was so helpful and their beers were in such good condition (from Doom Bar, Tribute and Betty Stogs I had the last two and was much impressed) that my concern was soon alleviated. While they obviously set their stall by their food, those hoping to have a good pint in a proper Cornish country pub with a roaring fire should not be disappointed! I can forgive the minor name change. Its better than the other way round where pubs deliberately add the ye olde in an attempt to be more olde!

The food was exceptional. Two of us had the chicken which was a special, my husband had the fish special and our friend had the pork belly. All were outstanding . The service was excellent. It was definitely a "10". We are from the States so finding a restaurant of this quality in Cornwall means so much to us. We plan to return to this area and Plough will be on our list of places to have . I am in the food industry and therefore can be quite fussy but I was so impressed. Our friends were late and the bartender was quick to chat us up and make us feel welcome with three generous tastes of local ale. We ordered some pints and went back to the back garden where we were surprised to find a playground for the kids with a trampoline and other playground activities, awesome for our 8 n 10 year old kids and there were even younger having fun out there. Our friends showed up and we went in for our reservation for 7 and our table was ready. Good kids food menu and great adult menu too! We had bangers n mash, Brie n cranberry Wellington, prawn wrap, Lasagna and the kids had nuggets n chips w the peas which were better than the pub yesterday. Highly recommended. I've stopped off for a snack or a quick drink a couple of times, and it's always really impressed me, and the lunch my parents and I had recently ranks as one of the best pub dinners the Andrews family can remember. Their crab sandwiches were fresh, as were the fish in their delicious creamy leek fish stew, while the ploughmans was huge. Desserts of chocolate and pecan brownie and banana fritters with toffee sauce were gobbled up. Ok, it's not cheap for a Devon pub, but the food is worth every penny - there was hardly anything on the menu I didn't want to scoff down. The pub itself is a charming sprawl of wooden rooms, and a small seating area out the front. It's homely and although the staff run a slick operation, they're still friendly and helpful. The pub was recently taken over by St Austell Brewery, so there's a good range of their beers, plus a couple of guest ales. This includes one local beer brewed in Branscombe. It's quaint, delicious, comfy and sits in one of the most stunning areas of the Devon coast. It is, quite simply, a perfect pub.
