The White House Visitor's Center has a lot of potential, but it needs some TLC. Reservations are not required, and admission is free, but you must pass through security. I was surprised, as I thought this would be a glorified gift shop or place to learn about the area. If you are looking for a good gift shop, they do have one with lots of merchandise from the White House Historical Association. The exhibits and replicas are fun and would be interactive, but many screens were broken. One area featured a spot where you could write down an idea of what the president should do, but there were no pencils or paper. The suggestions were from many years ago, mostly the Obama administration. On the other hand, the staff members were incredibly nice! They are National Parks Employees and showed me an authentic piece of the White House that broke years ago. His enthusiasm for his job is the big reason why I'm giving the center four stars instead of three. I worry that with the current Republican administration's budget cuts for national parks and sites, the museum may not get the fixes it needs to continue to educate people about the White House. read more

This is hosted by the National Park Service so service and experience similar to what you'd see at other NPS sites. I went here to go get the commemorative ornament that has the declaration of independence for the 250 anniversary and to look around the exhibits. I'd go back again, it's small but something to see if you have some time. read more

We had a great experience at this visitor center which is near the JW Marriott and the Willard Intercontinental Hotels. Lots of really cool artifacts from the presidents of the United States and their time in the White House. Very clean and most importantly, very warm from the outside Washington cold. In an old building named Bainbridge Hall. They also have a nice gift shop where you can get any of the White House ornaments and other collectibles (if you're a collector). read more

This was our last stop before heading out of DC for Easter weekend. We had taken a bus tour that pointed this out as a landmark. It is across the street from the White House itself. I have to say it was a welcome break for us since we were with our 2-year-old and hadn't been able to go into any of the museums. You have to go through a security check to get in at no charge. There was a clean public restroom. It isn't a huge space, but enough for some thoughtful White House history to admire. I enjoyed my visit here. It is easily located near the mall in a federal building, with grand ceilings. And free to get in, after going through TSA like security. Open Mon- Sun during business hours. I did not secure a scheduled visit to the White House. But honestly, this was a more fruitful alternative, in my opinion, and based on reviews of both. So much great info, artifacts, pictures, documents, videos, of White House history and its occupants. How it was built and who built it (originally the enslaved), and the many iterations it has gone through. It was fascinating to spend a couple of hours in there. It has some cool interactive touchscreen pads that you can do a deep dive into the layout of and floors and some of the rooms of the White House, along with info on presidents from the 1800s to today. The documentary that is viewable in the back of the venue is worth your time to watch. Though, I wish it just played on a loop rather than a wait time for it to restart. The Center definitely gives honor and reverence to the office of the presidency. Since this was a government building, I had to clear security and get my bag xray'd before entering. Watch, belt and wallet also had to be screened. Maybe TSA precheck could help facilitate entry for some visitors! Once inside, there were nicely curated exhibits of life, work, celebrations, history and the people supporting the White House. Given that I did not contact my Congressperson to plan a tour this was the only alternative to the in person tour There also was an open theatre in the rear and a gift shop plus special exhibits in the front. My only negative comment dealt with a number of the video screens in the various exhibits were not working. Someone needs to do some maintenance or use more reliable devices. read more

If you're going to the White House tour, this is a good scene-setting with information on the house itself. If you aren't going to the White House, it's still good a good oversight, but it won't take too long to go through. There's a short video way to the side and tucked away, so it's easy to miss. The building itself is beautiful and a former patent office with a beautiful ceiling and chandeliers. Plus it's a good bathroom if you're in the zone. There is a weird security to get into essential a small free museum (it's just like being in the airport) which seems like overkill. The gift shop is really large, so lots of great stuff to look at. There's also a lot of places to sit, because DC is a walking town, and sometimes you just need a nice, quiet indoor space to chill a moment. read more

I don't think I've ever written a negative review on here but this was a must. We spent 4 days in Washington and this was worst!!! At the security check there are 3 African American ladies who would be a better fit to be employed at a state penitentiary. They were yelling , throwing our belongings and talking to us like we were animals. I have never in my life experienced such disrespect and nastiness. Since our tour for the White House was not approved due to an event, we decided to at least stop by here to at least know more about our countries home for our president. There is a diorama in the middle of the space that gives you an eagle's view of the whole layout of the house. I didn't realize how big, yet small the house was. Along the museum, there are stories that highlight different locations on the grounds. You can learn more about events that took place in these areas to get a better sense of the lifestyle current and past presidents endured while in office. Make sure to take time to watch the documentary. It highlights some of the most famous events and historical presidents and their first ladies. This isn't just a visitor's center, it's also a mini museum of all things "White House". It includes exhibits of the Presidents, first families, their life in the White House and even things like what foods they ate and who cooked it. The entry is free and what is especially great is that they are open from 7:30am. Most museums in DC open anywhere between 10am and 12pm, so you can really get an early start to your day by visiting this Center. Important to note, you do have to go through a security checkpoint so enjoy your drinks prior to visiting. This is a separate building from The White House and it's located a few blocks away. You don't need a tour pass to enter here like with The White House and it's a nice place to visit along with the actual White House (or instead if you can't get a tour). It houses a large museum to The White House and has a great amount of information inside. It also houses a nice gift shop, so you can get souvenirs here (there's a small gift shop inside The White House too, but this is the big one). This was a last minute stop before leaving for the airport and I'm glad I did not miss this!! I had no idea how beautiful and informative of a location it would be. It is not just a gift shop, but genuinely a place you want to spend at least 30-40 min here just looking at the displays. I was already packed up, but managed to get the info of what I wanted. I oddly recommend avoiding the visitor center if you're also doing a visit to the White House. My experience was oddly more grumpy staff, and challenging experience in what would seem to be an easy space to visit (you'd think). The gift shop is ample and has a lot of great stuff but if you're doing the tour - skip and go there. If you're not doing a tour-- this is your spot to learn the history and see relics and artifacts. So, if you're like me and didn't do your due diligence before coming to Washington, then you would have been pretty surprised to find out you need to book your visit to the white house 21 days to 3 months in advance. If you're a US citizen, you will need to ask your congressman or woman to set up a visit. Otherwise, you need to go to your country's embassy to schedule a visit. However, the silver lining is that this place is wonderful to visit as a consolation prize. It's a wonderful little museum that looks at the history of the White house and its inhabitants. I really enjoyed my time here. Just like most places, you will need to pass airport like security before entering and there is a gift shop. As a Veteran who brought my family to enjoy the beautiful historic sites and wanted to take back a nice little keepsake from the visitors center after an awesome day site seeing, I stopped in to the White House visitors center to check the museum out and buy some ornaments. The security team at the front door represented by the Inter-Con Security was Hands Down the rudest team of security personnel I've ever experienced. I've worked security details at the federal level as a Navy Sailor and as a civilian for federal facilities and holy smokes were they lacking in showing myself, my wife, my mother in law and father in law who all three are also veterans any sort of respect at all. You can run a tight secure and disciplined operation without being rude. One security officer informed me that I could bring in my DC commemorative cup in as long as it was empty which it was, so my sister in law who heard this and out of respect for the directions began finishing her water bottle to which she got yelled at by another officer saying "You can't drink that here!" They were giving contradictory orders as to how to properly go through the security checkpoint and it seemed like the three officers were all trying to lead the way, talking over one another and confusing everyone in my group with the contradicting commands. There is a front desk where you can obtain maps of what to see on the National Mall. There is a lot of history about the White House here, photographs, models, presidential facts, etc. Very educational. The gift shop area has lots of neat knick knacks and lots of dated collectible ornaments. I didn't know that was a thing, but they sell them here. EXTREMELY RUDE security guards! They treat you like a second class citizen for even walking in the door.

This is a must stop whether you have boarding passes to enter the White House or not. It is right across from the "peoples house" so it could not be easier. It is FREE which is even better. This is my second time here and it was nice to see the improvements. This has been completely redone in the past year and added is a lot heavier security with with airport type of screening. When they are not busy like when I attended this only adds a couple of minutes. At peak times during the weekend afternoon lines could be out the door. If it's your first time I would move immediately to the theater to your left and watch the really great film. Even children will find interesting. There are several interactive table for small children to enjoy in the center. There are nice restrooms and the place has A/C for hot DC days. Displays are well done and original items used by previous administrations. Too many cool items to recall, but I especially did like the a china plate used during the Lincoln days that has survived. I found all the displays to be clean and attractive. There are some items to purchase if you like. There is nothing here that you probably could not find else where, but it is convenient. The White house has a gift shop too, but you must be a visitor. If your wanting to learn just about everything about the White House that you can think of. Don't be fooled by a few low reviews this is a sold exhibit. Make this a stop, you wont regret it. read more

We absolutely love the White House Visitor Center. There are several scaled down models of the architectural design to help you visualize the layout of the White House. There are also giant poster giving history of each president and their years in service. All and all tastefully done. Most of all is the gift shop and its selection of Christmas tree decorations. We bought several coffee mugs and several set of White House chinas. The half an hour spent here was well worth it. read more
