Here there are perfectly prepared trails that are cut into the woods with gentle ups and downs, and banked turns like on those videos from Instagram.!!!!!! I have been riding forever and would never dream to take my wife with me because she would become frustrated and exhausted... but here I actually purchased a bike for her. She joins me on these rides..... I set her up on a loop, which is challenging for her, and then I race around it to get a great workout. I lap her several times before she does one lap. This place is absolutely gorgeous!! I have been here eight times in the last month (end of June through July 2025) and ZERO MOSQUITO BITES!! They also have all sorts of tools to use as well as a bike washing station!!!! Last week they had a mountain bike race here and I participated in it!! My first ever!! I can't believe it is free to ride here!!

We arrived about 11:15 and one train was just sailing through and about that quick another train came from the other direction. Perhaps Sundays is a slow train day as we waited for 30 more minutes before we had to get back on the road. The little guys were excited and to see trains this close up enough to read advertisements was fascinating. It's a very nice clean park with picnic shelter, tables grill & water hydrant and comfy benches alongside tracks to watch the trains go by. Nice clean newer rest rooms and a small playground for toddlers. If it had been open we would have enjoyed the gift shop today, too. Will probably hear the grandsons asking to go back to watch more trains another time. I don't think they understood what an opportunity this park truly is.

There is a speaker that has some radio from rail operations but my scanner picked up much more so don't forget to bring yours. There is a built in grill if you want to have a cook out. The open air building had padded deck chairs and picnic tables and some built ins. There is a burn pit but I don't know if you can use it. Rail related items are on the property like trains. There is what looked like a gift shop by I didn't check it out. You can make a great family outing with the youngsters if you want. This is a great place for rail fans.

We all felt the landscape was beautiful as were the greens. It was hard at times to find where to go due to labeling, but the book helps a lot. The staff is friendly and helpful. So nice having the ball/club cleaner, cooler for our drinks, restrooms throughout the golf course, and water containers. Thank you for an enjoyable time. We will return!!

They have an observatory and you can visit the Jarrett Prairie Museum free of charge where kids can do some hands on learning. The expansive deck is a great high point to observe the prairie. The campgrounds all have a table, grill, and electricity. There are pit toilets w/potable water w/in an easy walk of every camp-site. They were clean and did not smell. There is one shower facility w/flush toilets and showers for the entire campground. Also clean and well maintained. Privacy at each campsite varied widely from some which were well wooded and could only see a couple of neighbors to those near the playground which were very open. We could hear a train going by nearby at night but it wasn't too loud. There is a lake, a restaurant where you can purchase firewood or rent paddleboats, and a few decent hiking trails. This was a nice park and we would happily camp here again.

It is a pretty…read morequick drive from Chicago, about 2 and a half hours with the usual 290 nightmarish traffic situation. We left at like 9AM on a Saturday and it was like rush hour, wtf. The campsites are spread out fairly well so you aren't too close to your neighbors. We stayed in the 1-25 ring. We had 4 couples and we each rented a campsite, but I almost think you could share a campsite with 4 people total too and it wouldn't be too tight. The lake (Carlton) is gorgeous and they have a little restaurant right on it that was cute and a great location. You can rent canoes, sailboats, paddleboats, etc on the lake. There are a lot of hiking trails as well. The gnats were a little out of control and I don't know if there is anything better at keeping them away, but bugspray didn't really work. They are just kinda irritating. I'd recommend bringing grill grates if you have them to put over the grill because some of them are kinda dirty. Also, they do allow alcohol, which is one of the reasons we picked it, I mean, camping without beer? No way! The bathrooms aren't too bad for camping and they also have a place to shower, we didn't go as we were only there for one night, but they do have showers. It seemed to be well maintained and patrolled. The forest ranger guy came by a few times and he was nice. If you are looking for a quick weekend getaway, this is a great spot to get out of the city for some fresh, pollution free air!
