We loved this place! First of all, you can't find a better location . . . right on the piers with great views of the harbor and in the middle of a vibrant nightlife area. The place is rustic, bustling, fun and filled with a diverse set of folks all having a great time. The vibe is casual. Service was good but efficient, in other words, interaction with staff tended to be rushed. There was not much "chit chat," but that is to be expected in such a busy place. Anyway, we were seated in what appeared to be a less desirable room, likely because we had no reservation, and I do wish the host would have offered a better table had we been willing to wait. It was about a 45 min wait for Fri night dinner, but boy was it worth the wait! Ordered the Peking Duck, Lamb Curry, with a side of rice. The duck was nice portion to share as an appetizer. Had a sweet glazed skin and was delicious with pancakes sauces and veggies. The lamb curry was also amazing. The lamb shoulder was so tender, literally falls right apart as soon as you stick your fork in it. The potatoes, cilantro, and peanuts were a really nice touch to the curry. The side of rice was huge too. The presentation for everything was beautiful. Our server Shrey was excellent. He made sure we were always refilled, gave great recommendations, and he even packed our leftovers for us. I looked around at some of the other tables, and all the portions were very generous for different entrees. Even the bathrooms were clean, with individual stalls and sinks. This is an Asian fusion style restaurant and it's not bad. The food is pretty good, cooked fresh, but the reason I'm giving it 4/5 stars isn't because anything was bad - it's just different than the style of Asian fusion we have in California (but that's not a bad thing!). If you LOVE coconut milk you will LOVE the Penang Curry! I love Penang curry but not with a ton of coconut milk so it wasn't why I was expecting. The Wagyu wontons were pretty good, more of a meatball style. The service was a tad slow but the restaurant was super busy. It's right on the wharf and one of the places open until 10pm so if you get into the city after 7pm this is a place you'll want to stop! read more

Some people might find this rude, but I was just happy they could get us in without a reservation. We were in and out in 45 minutes and we had two appetizers and two entrees. Very prompt service! The Church Road Rosé is not to be missed. We had the vegetarian wontons, edamame, pad thai, and Penang Curry. The pad thai was one of the best I have ever had and I am still thinking about it. If you're looking for top-notch Asian fusion food, consistently good service and a buzzing atmosphere, then look no further than White + Wong's, located on Auckland's Viaduct Harbour. White + Wong's menu is one of my favourites in Auckland - it's 'east meets west' and takes its inspiration from the street food found in China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand. I love the variety of food choices - think raw/cold cuts, noodles, curries, delicious dumplings and buns. Their food is fresh, flavourful and looks exciting on the plate. I first dined at White + Wong's a few month's ago - we tried their edamame beans with a killer spicy and sweet sauce, a selection of their dumplings and gua bao, and their refreshing nashi pear iced teas. The service was great and the food was fantastic! Fast forward to earlier this month, I saw that White + Wong's were doing a special menu for Auckland Restaurant Month. I just had to check it out! So, on Friday night, a fellow foodie friend and I tried out their 3 course menu. It was a pleasant evening, which meant we could sit outside on their expansive deck overlooking the water and boats. If you get the opportunity to sit outside, then definitely do! Starting with drinks, my friend ordered wine, while I couldn't go past one of their delicious cocktails. The Madame Butterfly really stood out - Beefeater Gin, Chambord *yay*, passionfruit, lemon juice and white chocolate garnish. It was pink (my favourite colour) and the white chocolate was definitely the cherry on top. They also serve wine, beer, spirits and non-alcoholic concoctions. We then indulged in their 3 course menu ($40 pp) and tried the following: Appetiser: Prawn Crackers & Chilli Salt to share. Raw Dish: Fijian Style Kingfish Sashimi with heirloom tomatoes, chili, lime, coconut cream and coriander. A refreshing start to our meal! Dumplings: I chose the Wagyu Beef, Shiitake & Cumin Shumai, while my friend had the Prawn and Coriander Ha Gao. Roti Roll: Roti filled with slaw, coriander, mint, lime, soy & sesame dressing, crispy shallots, toasted almonds and your choice of chicken, pork or eggplant. My friend chose the Bang Bang Chicken and I had the Char Sui Pork. All the meals were fresh and tasty, and had us wanting more. Our favourite dish of the night was the Roti Roll. This is something I wouldn't normally order off a menu, so I'm really glad I got to try White + Wong's version. The roti was crispy, yet soft, and both our chicken and pork were cooked perfectly. It made for a very flavoursome end to our night! White + Wong's is fast becoming one of my favourite dining places in Auckland. This was not a good experience. We went for lunch. It started with a rather gruff hostess. No problem, we all have bad days. Then our waiter came over and took our drink order. After bringing some water and one drink (all we ordered) he walked past us for 35 minutes never taking our food order. I get that they could have been short staffed, (alrhough it did not seem so), however he could have at least acknowledged us and apologized for the wait. I'm vegetarian so there wasn't much selection for me because of soups are made of chicken broth but I did have the vegetable dumplings that were incredible! White and Wongs, one of the newer Asian fusion restaurants to pop up in Auckland. After trying their food at Street Eats, and impressed by their bang bang chicken roti roll, it is only natural to hit up their restaurant. I'm in two minds about how I feel about the restaurant and here is why: 1. Food was served hot and man those wagyu shu mai were so soft and juicy I would return just for those. 2. They say items are made to share but their menu is written in a way that says otherwise - offering small plates and mains - I think they need to change the way they explain their menu or just change the style of their written menu. 3. We are told that everything comes out when it is ready - hmmm that's just a lazy excuse that they can't be bothered organising their kitchen for their meals to be served simultaneously. It's frustrating eating one dish to then wait for another to come later on, when you want to eat your dishes together. Also I am not sure what order there is to their serving, as our one cold dish - the papaya salad came out last and quite a bit later then the 3 hot dishes, tbh I think it was just forgotten. 4. Our waiter was very pleasant and I think its important to ask how our meal is -- once, but being asked about 4x is over doing it and awkward. Is it the service that lets this restaurant down or just the lack of organisation because the food we did have was absolutely delicious. It's great to see the bao are home made - I think one of the best ones I have had in auckland seeing a lot of restaurants buy them in - they are like soft fluffy pillows but I think the proportion of bun to filling is lacking slightly! They also forgot one of the orders. We went with banquet menu because we've had some good runs but this turned out to be the exception as far a portions are concerned. The portions were smaller than what you'd expect for a dish that's meant to be shared. Tasty but just not enough considering what you pay. The food was amazing so I really want to give this place 5 stars, but can't in good conscious because the service was so bad. The first dish (kingfish sashimi) that came out had a bug in it; gross but whatever, we showed the waiter/manager and continued eating. Usually after something like that happens, they 1) comp the offending dish and 2) be especially attentive for the rest of your time there. This place did neither. Our last dish came out a full 10 minutes later than the rest, we had to refill our own waters and sauces, our waiter was changed 4 times during our meal, and the final annoyance was asking for the bill twice and eventually having to go inside to pay it ourselves. This negative review is not meant to dissuade any patrons from visiting, but rather to highlight service issues so management can rectify them. No guest should pay for a dish that came out with a BUG in it. read more
