Just over a year ago I received a pretty bad cut to the back of my left foot (due to wearing entirely unsuitable shoes!) so I duly rubbed on some Savlon, stuck on a plaster, and merrily went on my way. Unfortunately by the next day, it had swollen up pretty badly, and I could not put and pressure on it at all, and was in a considerable amount of pain, so unfortunately it seemed like a trip to the dreaded A&E was on the cards. Whiteabbey is my most convenient, but they no longer offer Accident and Emergency, so I managed to talk my mother into kindly taking me to Antrim. I brought a magazine with me, because my previous experiences of A&E meant long boring waits.. but I was amazed to be seen only 10 minutes after arrival, and within half an hour, I was patched up, armed with a course of anti-biotics and on my way home. Very impressed!

This screening is called a mammogram which is a special X-ray which can spot cancers that are too small to see or feel. The whole procedure involves an opportunity to ask any relevant questions and then to have each breast X-rayed. The whole procedure takes less than half an hour and the mammogram itself will only take a few minutes. The X-rays will be reviewed by a specialist and the results will be sent to your home and your doctor in about two weeks. So ladies if you haven't availed yourself of this service don't be afraid, that half an hour could literally save your life.

That is because Ards hospital is responsible for delivering wee baby me around 23 years ago. Unfortunately they no longer offer midwifery, some say they reached the pinnacle around 23 years ago but others argue that government budget cuts encouraged the closure of this centre. I believe the former. Ards Hospital really is a shadow of its former self, but it still plays an important role in the community. They offer a walk in service Monday to Friday and if I was to have a minor injury I would bypass Hospitals that are closer to my home in order to go to Ards hospital. Day care, Outpatients facilities and minor operations are also preformed at Ards Hospital. Ards Hospital has always been extremely sympathetic to its patients needs. It has the feeling of a Family GP practice rather than a city hospital. The building itself has the same personality as the staff, wise and open with a whole lot of knowledge to share. It was once a Victorian workhouse but there is no need to worry about being served gruel at Ards today as they offer full catering department equipped with an affordable café for patients and visitors. All in all I would commend this hospital for its character and approach to care.

So I used here for a quick MRI scan. From I decided to do it until I got in here was 16 days. I learned what I needed - by the time I finish all tests & consultant expertise it'll be £2500. Money works. I fall into the worried-well category and we've a doctor in the family who thinks I'm nuts wasting my money. Well it's my money. I'm here as Tories are in power 14 years. One key lie is that the national health service was safe in their hands but they planned to destroy it. They have already destroyed public dentistry intentionally yet nutters lose teeth and still vote for them. Another truth is that medical doctors and consultants are insatiably greedy for money. There's no genuine competition, so business is ready made. These two ingredients resulted in a literal explosion of private hospitals/medicine for them that can afford it. The consultants contract set hours to the NHS weekly and moonlight in the private sector enriching themselves. The only good from this greed is that them who can pay get treated (but not emergency care). If you have a heart attack or stroke here now chances are you're fucked. The evil by the tories is that them who wait mostly have paid into the national insurance scheme a lifetime and still do - they must still pay in but get nowt in return. Them who can't pay twice sit in pain maybe years. No-one genuinely cares now in a society that once did. Thatcher & Reagan were the godfathers of where we are today - globalism, destruction of trade unions, privatisation, wage stagnation, immigration (they want it for cheap labour but pretend it's unacceptable and organise unworkable ways of stopping it). Tories began to try to force the poorest in this society to earn their poverty and do the lowest paid jobs that immigrants are doing but the policy requires putting them in abject poverty to force them to do so. A feature of this is the exponential growth of thousands of food banks in the 5th richest country on Earth. So this is a 5p tour of where we are. It's obvious too just looking around the unit we were in that the deadly cutbacks are incredibly savage. As we left in the lift from level 9 an elderly lady, barely able to stand got in at level 5. She had a small carry case and a walking stick. She was tearful telling us that she had been kept in, prepared for surgery and shortly before she was to be operated on it was pulled as they 'needed a specialist'. Apart from the obvious questions and sheer waste of a scarce valuable resource how could this be allowed to happen to vunerable people but it's a story we hear all too often. She had no idea when she will be called back so she'll have to continue to live in acute pain seemingly until the 12th of never.

The second is that the hospital has developed different sections at different times throughout its existence which has meant that its turned into a bit of a maze. Trying to blend the original hospital into the newer parts of the building hasn't really worked out and resulted in some parts being in areas where you wouldn't expect and at some point in the future someone will have to make changes to which departments are situated on which floors and where they are most suitable. The space isn't being managed to its best possible potential. All types of medicine should be on the same floor and same area to make everything better managed. Cant fault the staff though even the junior doctors on weekends.

This hospital is really easy to get to, just off the Antrim Road and Westlink - accessible from all parts of the City and beyond. The parking situation is great - I parked in the main car park just behind the main building of the hospital and it was only £1. The hospital itself is easy to navigate - I had to go to level four and as soon as I walked in I was able to see the signs. I reported to the reception 20 minutes early and in contrast to other reviewers I was seen straight away and was out of there within 15 minutes. Bish, Bash, Bosh - simple! There's a wee shop at the entrance and a cash machine right opposite - please note the car parking machines only take cash so you'll more than likely have to us it. A really pleasant experience for a hospital. There's a lot of different departments here and of course there's an A&E department.

I've never been one to gush about doctors surgeries - mainly because my past experiences haven't…read morebeen great. But I am currently in love with my new doctors surgery. I am an extremely infrequent visitor to the doctors and like most men I tend to let things get excruciating before I finally admit that I need to see a doctor. With this in mind I wasn't actually registered with a doctor it had been so long since my last visit. So just before Christmas I decided to get registered somewhere close to where I lived. I firstly went to a practice at the bottom of the Antrim Road which resembled a prison, luckily for me they weren't registering new patients, so I wandered further up the road and came to Salisbury Medical Practice. The practice itself resembles an old victorian manor house, welcoming, grand and warm. The doctors and staff evoke the same feelings. I went in to the practice on my first visit and to be honest I didn't even expect to be able to register but to my surprise they asked me to come back that afternoon to new patient registration (Thursday's). Once registered which was a simple process I was then able to book an appointment. To my complete and utter shock I was able to get one the next morning at 10am - Let's put this in to perspective. In 24 hours I was registered, booked and seen by a nurse and doctor. I can not recommend this practice enough - highly professional and caring. Easily the best medical experience of my life. For anyone worried about me, it's just a football injury!

This has been my GP practice for almost 20yrs now, the surgery has evolved during that time into…read morethe slick operation it is today. Routine appointments are often booked up well in advance but they have a triage system whereby when you phone in the morning you receive a call back from either one of the GPs or the Nurse Practitioner who will discuss your symptoms and decide how soon you need to be seen, appointments are kept specifically for this purpose. I have lost track of how many GPs actually work here but there are 6 consulting rooms around the main waiting area at the back, a small room opposite a treatment room & a larger treatment room beside reception. Most staff are polite, friendly & helpful. Self service check in allows for quick check in and a reduction in queues at reception. You can register for online services too which allows you to securely book/cancel appointments and order repeat prescriptions. You can nominate a local pharmacy to collect your prescriptions too to save a journey, very handy service indeed.

However my particular doctor is quite hard…read moreto see as there is generally about a 2-3 week waiting list always and sometimes when you ring up for a prescription to be sent to another chemist they don't often bother to fax it through. When you go to an appointment the waiting times can be 20-30mins generally which isn't great. But i can't fault my doctor - she is great. Waiting room facilities are BORING and depressing and the car parking space is dire. The new receptionist area is nice though - if you can ever get a receptionist to serve or talk to you! lol
