I have been a customer of Whylie eyecare for almost 30 years. I've always had good service and had a good product with them until recently, when they sold. My glasses are seven months old and they broke and I am told that they will not do anything about the warranty. I think this is bad customer service. Complete disaster and terrible treatment of a long-term customer (my family has purchased at least 5 pairs of glasses here) by none other than the CEO of the company, Vincent Copple! So, this is less a review of the Ames location (although mistakes were made) and more an indictment of the whole Whylie corporation. This situation involved at least 10 phone calls and I never did get my glasses!!! Here is the story: (1) Upon noting that my glasses were getting tiny scratches everywhere after a couple of months of normal wear, I suspected that they forgotten to put the scratch-proof coating on the glasses. I always order the coating. (2) Went to store and asked about it and indeed there was no scratch-coating in the order. Looking back on my previous orders, the manager noted that I always get scratch coating so it appeared that the coating not being ordered was a mistake on their part. She said they could send them out to redo the lenses. Since it was a weekend so I came back at the beginning of the week to have them sent out so I wouldn't have to be without them over the weekend. There was no mention of cost and she said "we can take care of it" and have them redone. (3) Came back and dropped off glasses. Manager was busy so gave them to the other person and explained what happened (she was there the first time I was in and remembered me). I said to call me if there were questions. (4) Got a call from Whylie (Call #1) that there would be a cost but and it would be 40% of the price: $77.60. Although irritated, I went ahead and said OK. Gave them my credit card information over the phone. (5) I called that Friday and asked if they were ready (Call #2), having been told they would hopefully have them done by the end of the week. They weren't ready but the person said they get shipments on Saturdays too so check then. I called Saturday (Call #3) and was told that was not right and hat they do not get shipments on Saturday. (6) Manager called me Monday morning (Call #4) and said the person put my order in wrong and gave me a 60% discount rather than a 40%. Recall that it was THEIR fault they didn't order the coating on what are plastic lenses as I had requested. I had already paid $77.60 (when originally I was led to believe I would have to pay nothing) and now they wanted me to pay another $110. On top of that, their math was wrong. I said I wouldn't pay the extra. She said she needed to call the "CEO" and ask if that was OK. (6) Manager calls me back (Call #5) and said, unbelievably, the CEO insisted on having the $110. I said, given that this was their fault, that was unacceptable and that I wanted to cancel my order unless he drops the $110. Manager calls CEO again. Manager calls me back (Call #6) and the CEO He said the "best he could do" is for me to pay the $75. This is where things get really crazy. I'm informed then that they never even started the order (presumably because of this billing issue). Keep in mind they have already had my glasses for a week. (7) At this point I said I wanted a full refund and I my glasses back right away by overnight mail. I have been without them for a week and that it would be at least another week to have the new lenses put in. She says she needs to call the CEO so see if that's possible. (8) She calls me back regarding returning my glasses by overnight mail (Call #7). It turns out they are "away at the manufacturer in Chicago" and that they can't get them back to me. So, now they have my glasses held hostage and my money! I said that won't work and that I want them back immediately. (9) She calls the CEO and calls me back (Call #8). Now they say I will have my glasses back by overnight mail and will refund my money. I picked them up at the store the next day and to get my refund. It turns out they "handle refunds at the main office" and can't do it then. On top of that refunds take "around a week" to process. I asked for the name of the CEO so I could call directly. She even offered to give me his number. :) (10) I call the CEO's office (Call #9) and left a message that waiting a week for my refund is unacceptable. A person calls me back (not him) (Call #10) and let's me know they processed the refund. In sum, I can't believe this CEO, Vincent Copple, he's so stingy that he gave me, a devoted customer, a hard time over a measly $110, especially when it was their fault. I told the manager, a very nice lady, that he's being really stupid and to expect a bad review, no more business from me or any of my friends. After this massive waste of my time I was reluctant to spend even more time on a review but felt people should know. read more
