With the Big and Little Arkansas (pronounced AR-Kansas) Rivers rushing together right below, there is a steady sound of moving water that makes the whole place feel calm even when there are people around. The pedestrian bridges are honestly half the experience. They are cable-stayed and with those tall, clean looking masts and the cables fanning out, it feels light and modern. Walking across gives a great rive of the rivers on both sides and the design makes the approach to the Keeper feel intentional. Almost like the bridges are guiding you to the statue. Also, admission to the museum is *free*. The museum has a small brochure re: WSU's outdoor sculpture collection and we greatly enjoyed walking around the campus to see many sculptures. I moved to Wichita on a long-term but temporary assignment for work, having never visited or even met anyone from Wichita. On my 3rd day in town, I happened to pick up a CityArts catalog at a local coffee shop and immediately scrambled to make the registration deadline for the Silversmithing class. This is honestly the best move I've made in ages -- the class is CHEAP at $125 for 10 weeks/25 hours of instruction and so so so so so worth it. I've now taken 2 terms and am sad to be signing up for my final term before leaving my assignment in Kansas. Kathy has been an AMAZING teacher -- I've gone from knowing near NOTHING about metalwork to designing and crafting brass and silver pieces that strangers have asked to purchase. I could not recommend Kathi's classes more emphatically.

The Dale Chihuly glass exhibit was amazing…read more In the main art exhibit (free to visit - no charge), I saw exactly 1 painting that took my breath away. The rest were pretty bleh. I am from the East Coast, by the Smithsonian and all DC museums. I have been spoiled by art my whole life. I have also taken art and art history courses. My partner said the good art is at the bigger museums. He is not wrong! So what's left over is what's here at this smaller museum in the middle of the country. That's sad. People in this area deserve to see beautiful art too. The visiting exhibit is awful right now. I don't want to say what it is. But it's just awful and we paid $6 per person to see it. I looked at everything and had to get out of there. Nothing enjoyable. The museum was packed. I think we went on Valentine's Day or thereabouts. We got food. It took quite a while to get the food. Else enjoyed the live jazz! Or at least I did! Nothing like live jazz. I am an artist and I would love to have my art in this museum - then I know beautiful art would be hanging up that people would enjoy looking at. Driving home, my partner said he wouldn't pay $6 to see that visiting art exhibit again, but he would pay $100 to see my art - which is hanging in his own living room! I feel very sad about my review. But it's my truth. Art is subjective , I suppose. I hope future exhibits knock it out of the park. Hopefully this was just a low point for the museum.

This is probably the most comprehensive War Memorial Park I've ever visited! The Veterans of each…read morewar have been memorialized, plus there is a Bicentennial Flag Pavilion, Gold Star Wives of America, POW*MIA, Purple Heart, American Gold Star Mothers, Pearl Harbor, Merchant Marines, and the crew members who lost their lives on U.S. Submarines after WWII, among others! It took close to an hour to walk along and appreciate all of the memorials. There was so much to appreciate at each memorial. The Korean War Memorial was unique! It had an Asian styled entrance. It was pretty cool! When you looked through it, you could see the Map of Korea. Beyond that, there is a soldier on top of a pedestal with tributes to each of the Branches of Military. I took a picture of each plaque which also gives you a different vantage point of the soldier on top of the pedestal. I also was fascinated with the 15 flags flying high! Each flag has shows the changes in the United States through the years. Did you know that there is a specific flag for the Commander-In-Chief? This Park is just steps away from the Arkansas River. We were walking along the path next to the river when we spotted this and decided to take a closer look. So glad we did! I had not seen memorials for a lot of the Wars memorialized here. Sad to say there have been a lot of conflicts, but it's really cool that this spot in Kansas paid tribute to the Veterans and their families. Nestled and stretched out over several acres along the Arkansas river (directly across Exploration Place) Lots of pride and respect was given to each war, personalized bricks and dedication signs. US Navy Submarine-had a real MK-14 torpedo and the Merchant Marine-is not very often displayed in most Military memorial parks, from what I hear. Operations Freedom-honoring fallen troops in Iraq and Afghanistan was impressive and had a life size kneeling bronze soldier. The New American Revolutionary War Memorial is started and looks like it should be done this year. Some others: Korean War, POW-MIA, Pearl Harbor, US Marines, WWII and Vietnam Vets No doubt, a visit is mandatory...Wichita residents-bring your children to teach/show respect for those who served for our country.
