Hired a car to travel through Tasmania - the brakes FAILED on our third day, leaving us to drive roughly 200km without brakes (due to some areas of Tasmania not having reception). aside from putting our lives in danger, i've made multiple requests for at least be reimbursed for the 2 days i couldn't travel anywhere whilst the issue was being resolved. i've followed up 4 times, without any progress. no moral accountability. stay clear - not worth the 'savings' read more
Oh, Wicked Campers! How I love thee, and kinda hate thee, but mostly love thee. Wicked bills themselves as the bad boys of Australia. And they are. They've got the cool bad boy attitude, some of the coolest painted vans you've every seen, and they also charge prices well beyond the quality of their vehicles. I recommend you get to Wicked early to pick up your van. We did and it seemed wise as people who got there 30 min after us waited a good 90+ minutes while we got instant service. The Wicked depot is pretty awesome to look at. I've posted some pics of the graffiti. Our first surprise came pretty quickly. SURPRISE! You don't have a reservation. Apparently, I failed somehow to confirm my reservation even though I had a confirmation number. That's one way to put a damper on your vacation excitement. Not to worry though, the super friendly and helpful guy behind the counter told me they don't send anybody away and proceeded to find me the best van he could with 0 advanced notice. In the end we got a really Wicked Premium 4x4 2-sleeper that was pretty new and had an amazing Aboriginal paint job. Our second surprise came pretty quickly as well. SURPRISE! After filling the van with 75$ in gas and stopping to pick up a couple of groceries, the van crapped out just before we got to the highway. It seemed the AC wasn't working properly and when we went to fiddle with it, there was a puff of smoke and the car promptly dies. Cue me and the wife sitting on the side of a residential road waiting for Wicked roadside service. They actually came really quickly (we were only maybe 2km from the depot) and identified a broken fan-belt and seizing AC motor. "No problem, Mate. We'll get it started in a jiffy!" Unfortunately, it didn't start in a jiffy. Seems the AC motor had done something bad to the electrical and the van wouldn't start at all. A quick rope connecting bumper to bumper, I road in the van with one mechanic, the wife got in the work truck with the other, and we pull towed it back to Wicked home base. Our third surprise was waiting. Clearly the crappiest of premium vans in their fleet was now waiting for our enjoyment. A real beast which was smaller, dirtier, and much less pretty than the previous. But it had AC and started so with a quick trip to the gas station where Wicked paid for the next 75$ of petrol, we were off and rolling. Two weeks later, I really had no complaints about the van. I didn't have too many positive things to say either. The beds were comfortable enough - but not too comfortable. The privacy curtains were pretty old and kinda crappy - more like semi-privacy curtains you could say. The van ran fine but shook pretty strongly right around 100km. We did get a few more surprises as we went along. SURPRISE! Sometimes the electric motor for the sunroof stopped working. SURPRISE! The van doesn't ding at you when you leave the lights on. SURPRISE! Wicked didn't leave us a pair of jumper cables like we expected. SURPRISE! They did get a roadside service agent out to us in Port Macquarie in about 40 minutes. Ah, Wicked, I guess I love you. I wish you had given me that sweet Grateful Dead van I saw in a lot in Byron Bay but I'll never forget the piece of shit I spent my Australia vacation in. Overall, I recommend you rent from a company with a cleaner, newer fleet of vehicles. But you won't have as much fun as I did. read more

If you would like to rent from these guys, check out the kind of slogans they have on the back of their vans. "'In every princess, there's a little slut who wants to try it just once' " 'A wife: An attachement you screw on the bed to get the housework done.' If you are OK with these kinds of ideas, then by all means go ahead rent Wicked read more

I'm here to back up Ivan's review. Friends of mine rented a Wicked Camper and their experience made Ivan's look delightful. I have since read an article about how a lot of the vans aren't actually roadworthy, and after being stuck behind a few on country roads I'd agree if the amount of black smoke is any indication. They may be cheekily painted, but if it was me I'd be hiring a much more boring, yet much more dependable camper van from elsewhere. read more

Liars! and Cheats. There van was in poor condition, the battery went dead on us and they tried blaming it on the lights being left on, then it broke down halfway around a roundabout. the road side assistant man was the no help, rude and kept hinting that it was our fault. DO NOT HIRE A VAN, IT WILL RUIN YOUR HOLIDAY! read more

Worst van hire in Australia. Do not rent from. Camper van had 350,000 km's on it and wasnt road worthy: shocks were shot, wipers were trashed, dangerous in the rain, cig lighter didnt work, wasnt even cleaned for us. The rental is not as cheap as u think. Go with Jucy or Appollo. Disappointed with Wicked :-( read more

My husband and I decided to rent one of these vans to travel the Great Ocean Road over the New Year period. We were disappointed with the van and the service from day one. Firstly, the van was filthy. The plates and saucepans had not been cleaned. We were also helpfully provided with broken plastic cutlery. Inside, the steering wheel and gear stick was smothered with a thick sticky red sauce. The van itself had a half tank of petrol, although we were clearly told that we were expected to return the van with a full tank of petrol. Also, there was all sorts of obscene language on the side of the van, and we felt a bit embarassed parking up in campsites next to small children and disapproving parents. Now, we are very used to camping, and weren't expecting a 5* sleep in our camper van. Sleeping in a wicked camper van was the most uncomfortable experince ever - we would have had a better night if we had slept under the stars! Absolutely no bedding is provided, and so we had to spend part of our holiday searching for sheets to lay on the disgusting0 "matress". Due to unforseen circumstances, we had to fly home a day early, and so ended up returning our van one day early. We contacted John, the owner about this at the beginning of January. We appreciated that we would not get a refund for the day we had lost out on, but were hoping to get the one day liability and insurance fee back. For the past 7 weeks, we have been e-mailing and telephoning Wicked Campers weekly, only to be told our claim is being looked in to. Today, we have been told that we can have a credit note of $184 to use on our next hire of Wicked Campers in the next year. What a joke! We have hired many campers in the past, and have always had positive experiences. Do not hire a Wicked Camper! read more

More like janky vans that don't have alignment or well connected fuel hoses, careful you don't blow up or get scammed by their "free extra day"! They hide that they don't give any refunds for unused days... dissatisfied read more

Looking to charge money in any way possible. They have no customer service whatsoever. We called in while being at the car wash, as Wicked required, (after having used the car for three days only) and told them that we'd run 10 minutes late. The clerk said this was totally fine. When we then showed up 10 minutes late the shop was closed down, which resulted in an additional 50 $ fine on top of spending 30 $ on the car wash. Finally they use scouts or a GPS tracking system to spot if you drive after 6 PM. If this happens you are in for a MASSIVE fine. In summary, this has been the worst, not just car rental, but overall rental experience of my life. They hide behind this cool and mellow anything-is-possible-mate attitude, but once you have put your signature on that piece of paper and given them your credit card details you have basically signed your own death warrant. read more

After travelling with Wicked Campers, I would NEVER do it again nor recommend. The most appealing aspect was affordability, but it comes at the price of SAFETY. My friend and I were both renting a vehicle for the first time and took it on the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne. While giving the benefit of the doubt, our vehicle proved unsafe for normal road conditions and would not pass a road inspection. The van had minor defects (i.e. broken radio, curtain fixings without curtains) but the greatest SAFETY concerns were: 1. Sideview mirrors - would turn in on uneven roads or when reached 80km/hr driving speed 2. Steering Wheel - incredibly misaligned. Driving straight had the steering wheel at nearly 75% angle. Obvious an accident had taken place before and repair was not completed. 3. Windshield wipers - outdated and worn out. Even when cleaning the blades, it made driving in the rain WORSE. We discovered all the defects while nearly out of the city. In addition, we were given the keys and left to leave the lot without any instructions for vehicle use. There was also no car manual. Just lots of stickers and decals posting any liability of the car on the renter (this is why it is CHEAP). Upon returning the vehicle, we voiced are concerns and felt that they were well received. We received instructions for who to communicate with regarding our dissatisfaction. After sending a very polite and thoroughly crafted e-mail, with photo and video evidence, we were told that an investigation would take place and our concerns would be taken care of. After a month, no follow-up e-mail was sent so we inquired about the status of our complaint. One day later, we were told that nothing was done. Based on the hiatus time, and the response to our follow-up e-mail, we doubt the company did anything and that car is still on the road. For a company that values "Safety, Value and Practicality" but views these concerns as "minor inconveniences", shows the misalignment of morals as a business practice principles. While the price is an incentive, the safety as claimed by the company is not to standard. Spend the extra money with another company (with an international reputation), to have a safe, enjoyable, and hassle-free trip. read more

(Warning to travelers) While traveling through Australia in December I had plans to stay in a camper for a week through the rental company Wicked Campers. I booked and paid the full amount weeks ahead of time, confirming with the company a week prior that my vehicle would be ready for pick up in Byron Bay, where I had a full trip planned to beach hop up the coast through New Years; a road trip I had always wanted to do. After flying and busing for over 24 hours to their location, I was informed (aka yelled at) upon arrival that my vehicle was in fact nowhere to be found, that there were no other options and I'd be refunded in a week. During busy season it Byron there is literally no vacancies anywhere in the area unless you can dish up over $1000/night. (And I was now waiting a week to be refunded the $1500 I had paid Wicked). All hostels were completely booked for the week. I called numerous agents and was given the final option to email the owner in hopes he would read it and offer a solution, or at least help me find a place to stay that night. I had three suitcases with me, stuck in a town where I had never been before. I explained my situation thoroughly to him and that frankly I was frightened being a solo female with nowhere to go and all of my belongings, due to a mistake their company had made. Three weeks later I still have not heard from him or any of the staff who were supposed to call me back. My holiday plans were ruined, but I managed to get out of the area safely a couple days later and that's all that mattered to me at that point. I wasn't expecting such a situation from a well-known company, but it's just a reminder that you can never be too careful.. after explaining my situation to friends I had three tell me similar situations with this company and that they are known not to care about customers. I was willing to pay for another vehicle just to sleep in, but no one would reply back to me as I was stranded. Unfortunately these days it's very easy for companies to take advantage of backpackers. I have been traveling full-time for five years and this has to be the worst treatment I've had and I hope this post will help others from not ending up in similar situations. Be safe fellow wanderers! read more

IF YOU RENT AT WICKED CAMPER YOU WILL BE BADLY RIPPED OFF The true and unbelievable story of a real and seemingly systematical rip-off With friends we have rented a van at WICKED from 24.11.2015 to 03.12.2015 and we drove from Cairns to Brisbane. The cars are in a very mediocre shape, but that was ok, we knew that form the beginning. We had 2 issues with the van: On our second day, when we were on our way to a camping spot and stopped to pick up some food, the Van didn't turn on anymore. We thought the battery was empty so we had to call the breakdown service and the guy who came realized that it was actually the tank, which was apparently empty. Even though the fuel gauge showed that there was enough fuel left. Since that day we always had an extra tank of fuel with us in the back of the car. But the fuel gauge was not the only thing that was broken in the van. The second issue was, that the indicator for the overheating of the car was broken. There was a note saying that if the car overheats over a certain number we should stop and take a break. Since ours was broken, we did not realize the car was overheating so the van just stopped in the middle of nowhere and we had to wait for about 20 minutes until we were able to drive again. Since we knew that Wicked campers are not in a very good shape and we had such a great time on our roadtrip, this didn't bother us too much. All good, Australia is just an amazing place! When we returned the van on 03.12.2016 a kind lady was there to check the van and gave us a green light - no damages, everything ok. And that was the only true statement. A few days later, our bond covering AD 3.050 was not redeemed on the basis of apparent damages done to the car. (see below) Wicked Campers - Bond Refund (Booking #1XXXXX) Dear XXX; Hi Wicked customer, Please be advised that today we have refunded your bond less $1200 to cover for the damage done to the tent on your vehicle. If you have any questions please email admin@wickedcampers.com Kind Regards, Wicked Campers Administration Team. There were no damages done at all The car was taken back by WICKED with ZERO comments WICKED did not answer our complaint emails for weeks After threating with legal action they sent an email on which they never followed up (see email attached) 09.02.2016: Good morning XXX, Thank you for your recent correspondence. This matter is currently under review and we will get back to you with the outcome once finalised. Kind Regards, The Damage Team Wicked Campers After threating them with making this case public via social media they did not come back either It took them 15 days to actually answer... So now: They will get the social media shit storm they deserve They will be confronted with legal action against them ... and you will hopefully never rent at WICKED camper. This story is so absurd - we will keep you updated on a regular basis as this story with WICKED unfolds - stay tuned, this will be very interesting, since we will not save one single AUD on lawyers costs. read more

Piece of shit vans, but more importantly if you hire one of these vans YOU are complicit in perpetuating a rape culture that treats women as objects solely for the benefit of men. YOU will be complicit in misogynism and promoting violence against women, still a huge problem in our society. So don't drive these vans and don't support Wicked. read more
