Oh, Wicked Campers! How I love thee, and kinda hate thee, but mostly love thee…read more Wicked bills themselves as the bad boys of Australia. And they are. They've got the cool bad boy attitude, some of the coolest painted vans you've every seen, and they also charge prices well beyond the quality of their vehicles. I recommend you get to Wicked early to pick up your van. We did and it seemed wise as people who got there 30 min after us waited a good 90+ minutes while we got instant service. The Wicked depot is pretty awesome to look at. I've posted some pics of the graffiti. Our first surprise came pretty quickly. SURPRISE! You don't have a reservation. Apparently, I failed somehow to confirm my reservation even though I had a confirmation number. That's one way to put a damper on your vacation excitement. Not to worry though, the super friendly and helpful guy behind the counter told me they don't send anybody away and proceeded to find me the best van he could with 0 advanced notice. In the end we got a really Wicked Premium 4x4 2-sleeper that was pretty new and had an amazing Aboriginal paint job. Our second surprise came pretty quickly as well. SURPRISE! After filling the van with 75$ in gas and stopping to pick up a couple of groceries, the van crapped out just before we got to the highway. It seemed the AC wasn't working properly and when we went to fiddle with it, there was a puff of smoke and the car promptly dies. Cue me and the wife sitting on the side of a residential road waiting for Wicked roadside service. They actually came really quickly (we were only maybe 2km from the depot) and identified a broken fan-belt and seizing AC motor. "No problem, Mate. We'll get it started in a jiffy!" Unfortunately, it didn't start in a jiffy. Seems the AC motor had done something bad to the electrical and the van wouldn't start at all. A quick rope connecting bumper to bumper, I road in the van with one mechanic, the wife got in the work truck with the other, and we pull towed it back to Wicked home base. Our third surprise was waiting. Clearly the crappiest of premium vans in their fleet was now waiting for our enjoyment. A real beast which was smaller, dirtier, and much less pretty than the previous. But it had AC and started so with a quick trip to the gas station where Wicked paid for the next 75$ of petrol, we were off and rolling. Two weeks later, I really had no complaints about the van. I didn't have too many positive things to say either. The beds were comfortable enough - but not too comfortable. The privacy curtains were pretty old and kinda crappy - more like semi-privacy curtains you could say. The van ran fine but shook pretty strongly right around 100km. We did get a few more surprises as we went along. SURPRISE! Sometimes the electric motor for the sunroof stopped working. SURPRISE! The van doesn't ding at you when you leave the lights on. SURPRISE! Wicked didn't leave us a pair of jumper cables like we expected. SURPRISE! They did get a roadside service agent out to us in Port Macquarie in about 40 minutes. Ah, Wicked, I guess I love you. I wish you had given me that sweet Grateful Dead van I saw in a lot in Byron Bay but I'll never forget the piece of shit I spent my Australia vacation in. Overall, I recommend you rent from a company with a cleaner, newer fleet of vehicles. But you won't have as much fun as I did.
National Storage Albion
I recently enquired about storage space in Albion when I was in between houses, in the middle of a…read morerental crisis and struggling to find housing. NS salespeople kept following me up Daily, stressing that if I didn't jump on the special rate I may miss out. I was still trying to find a house in the meantime - bc otherwise I would have been homeless. I decided to play it safe and book a storage place, trusting that that would be the right decision, spending money that I didn't have to ensure I could have a backup. I got a call from a salesperson AGAIN with a tart tone saying "You said you were going to book the unit and i haven't heard from you", to which I replied "Actually i just booked it, I'm not sure why it didn't come up on your system". She replied "oh well i'll take you off as a lead then". I'll take you off as a lead?! nice. At the eleventh hour, I ended up finding a place, signing a lease and being handed the keys the same day. I enquired to cancel my storage space to which I was given the run around on how to pursue a refund. I have today, received an email that my refund request was denied with a short and sharp correspondence. Not sure if NS is aware of the rental crisis or just hoping to leverage off of it, but with that context and all of the customer touchpoints I have experienced throughout my encounters with National Storage, I have had a sub-par experience. I am extremely disappointed about the lack of care from beginning to end, and they've certainly guaranteed that I will never recommend nor use NS in the future.

Double-booking myself is something I've become talented at doing and on this occasion it saw me needing a reliable form of transport from Cleveland to Doomben Racecourse and back again. Jeeves was off on his annual round the world jaunt on this weekend so helicopter transfer was out. Enter Betta. Mark & Nicole run a pretty great local and family business. Having ruled out public transport I found this Cleveland based car hire company and they made the booking process as easy as ABC. Not only did they have a small car available on the dates I needed, it was budget-friendly ($60 and 200kms included) and they collected and dropped me off at the ferry terminal for Stradbroke Island. Talk about service! The car itself was spick, span and safely speedy. Any tolls that you may have driven through are fixed up upon return. Plus, rather than you having to take account of any existing damage to the car they photograph it before you zip away. Suffice to say, these guys will be top of my list next time I'm in need of four wheels in Cleveland.

No one answered, no instructions were provided, and we had no way to access the car we had booked. We had to scramble late at night with a child under 2, pay for multiple taxis -- to their office, then to our accommodation, and again the next morning -- just to finally get the vehicle. To make matters worse, when they called back the next day, the staff were completely unapologetic and rude, repeatedly blaming us and showing zero empathy. Then, when I called on the day of return to simply ask how long the car return process usually takes so I could plan my journey, I was met with one of the rudest customer service reps I've ever spoken to. He outright refused to give me any timeframe and wouldn't explain why I couldn't request an airport shuttle over the phone. Very poor operations. No accountability. No support. And absolutely disgraceful customer service. Never booking with them again.

Vehicle was towed to Sunco Hyundai Dealership at Maroochydore and I was told would be fixed in 1 week but later told 2 months as a new motor had to come from Korea. I was given a Avis hire car but found when checking the paperwork that there was a $2500 Excess so returned the vehicle and was left without a vehicle for nearly 2 months. I requested in writing that Northside Hyundai to either give me a replacement new vehicle or a full refund and put a complaint in with Fair Trading Qld but this was refused. Vehicle was then given back to me after repair and my mechanic then discovered that when new motor had been installed the driveshaft oil seal had been damaged and the heater hose also damaged and reinstalled. I then took the vehicle to Lakes Hyundai Dealership and they tried to repair but left the engine bolts loose. Car was driven for one month with a loose engine and taken back to Hyundai several times before it was discovered they had forgotten to do up the bolts. I then got the vehicle back only to discover the motor was overheating and has an oil leak and I called RACQ who also discovered fuel injector leak, noisy tappets and suspected electrical wiring fault and vehicle returned to Northside Hyundai. Car is still with Northside Hyundai as I have written to them and rejected the car due to many major faults with the engine under Australian Consumer Law and have requested either a full refund or a new replacement vehicle as per Hyundai Warranty and have been offered a new replacement vehicle but they are requiring me to pay them $3000 which I have refused. One month and one week have passed since returning the vehicle and I have been given a loan car by Northside Hyundai which is a Hyundai Accent the basic model but there is still no resolution in sight. Buyer beware!!!! The Hyundai warranty is not worth the paper it is written on as they will try to repair instead of refunding or replacing and it appears that every time the dealers work on your car they only seem to make it worst.
