11-30-24 Saturday…read more Had out of town visitors and they wanted to go to the beach. I normally go to Buerkes Beach but one of the persons in our party cannot walk far. So I chose this beach based on the high Yelp ratings that proved once again correct. Once we arrived you pay the meter based on the time you plan to be at the beach. I chose two hours. You enter the parking space number and pay $1. per hour which is very reasonable. Gorgeous beach lots of sand that has not eroded away. If it was warmer we would definitely have stayed longer here. Will be back again soon.

There is a portalet at mile marker one, which I appreciate! We've seen so many migrating birds here - most recently hundreds of ring-necked ducks and green-winged teals. On a warm day, you'll see alligators on the shore. Also within the refuge are several walking trails, a visitor center, and the lovely Kingfisher Pond. The pond has a one mile hiking trail around it and we saw so many birds! The visitor center has extremely limited hours but the rest is the reserve is open from sunrise to sunset.

It's clear the layout was built with both kids and caregivers in mind. The green space next to it was just as inviting. I wandered the walking paths. One unexpected perk: I found working electrical outlets tucked discreetly around the park, probably intended for Christmas lights or seasonal events. I was able to use one to charge the on-board battery in my RV without a hitch. That little convenience made a big difference, and it's the kind of thoughtful detail that makes me want to return. Victoria Bluff Heritage Preserve is a SC managed wildlife preserve (1000+ acres) just minutes from…read moreHilton Head off Hwy 278. The entrance I used is on Sawmill Creek road, with a parking area enough for 15 or so cars. The walking path, or hiking trail is a natural base and easy to walk. It's a good car width wide. Hiking is not permitted during the hunting season of Oct. to Dec. The path is supposedly 4 miles, but I did not walk the full amount. It's a good walking area through tall pines, with many saw palmettos along the way. Lots of birds moving about, I saw mostly cardinals. I enjoyed the walk during Feb with 60 degree temperature, so I imagine it gets much hotter during summer. Open dawn to dusk, it's a worthy natural area to get out and walk. I would return here to walk it again.

There is another park on the other side, but it has a playground and kids. I did not feel up to that today. The park also has a historical marker and you know how I love historical markers, even ones from the Confederacy. This one reads, "Known for acts of bravery and outstanding leadership in the defense of Beaufort. This Memorial is erected by the Stephen Elliot Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy opposite the home in which this chapter was organized." I really liked being able to visit the Stephen Elliott Park / Cannon Park in Beaufort. It is very…read morepeaceful and has great views of the water and the bridge. There is a nice fountain and cannons in the park and places to sit down and enjoy a nice quiet moment. You can feel all of the history and all of the years and centuries around you everywhere. I enjoyed being able to come here and enjoy the best of what Beaufort has to offer in a calm and relaxed manner. I recommend this park for a quick visit.
