This is Austria, partially traditional with lots of history and heritage and partially modern with very often "half-done" solutions. This is empress Sissi I. of Austria, one of the most famous European monarchs. Besides you have lots of modern restaurants and shops. But I have to say, after all those months of existence after renovation and after lots of negative reviews - the elevators are still stupid, no improvements concerning labelling at all - the post office became even worse, still the same stupid head of the post office Yesterday the head of the post office complaned because a lady just asked whether she might have some more tape for her parcel. People were lined up far outside the post office - is this the first Christmas they experience?! One of the clerks did not want to sell a single stamp to a lady!!!! Everything else is still quite ok. One day they will have injuries at that stupid post office, too many people queued up, even handicapped, people with baby cards and wheelchairs. Even the police showed up because there were so many people - security leak!!!! At least somebody has to get injured, till they react!!! read more

Full service station. You can store your luggage. Bathrooms are .50 and are cleaned immediately after you finish yoir business. Speaking of business, there are several eateries. Shopping is on offer too. The bus station is across the street. The station is downtown and a main shopping street starts in the area. Police presence is strong. Metro subway connections including to the International Bus Station. And of course there are trains leaving and arriving from here. Ticket buying and luggage storelage and even bathroom use purchase are automated and efficient. There are also information ppaces for non automated service and information. Wunderbar!!! The Happiness Station sells ice cream. There's a Subway. Crobagerie for baked goods and sandwiches. Weiner Wald for weiners. And a fried fish fast food Nord See or some such. Set up caught us a little off guard with our train coming on the same platform as one going to another city. All it meant was us standing there like silly tourists trying to figure out why our car wasn't there. Eventually it showed up after we were standing in the cold for 10 minutes more than we would have if we had understood the system better. The station is modern with lots of shops and cafes. At the moment, Westbahnhof is still the starting point for rail journeys to the northwestern parts of Austria and much of Germany. This will maybe change when the ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) completes construction of the new Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) in a few years. Westbahnhof itself is still undergoing a lot of renovations--the ÖBB are transforming the rather utilitarian, but large, train station from the 1950s into a clean shopping center that also happens to have a railway connection. As it is now, Westbahnhof houses s couple of small shops, a newsagent's, tobacconist, a small grocery store and a large food court with cafés and eateries. let me just say that public transportation in europe pretty much beats out anything we have in the states. of course, some countries are better than others and some stations are better organized than others. austria is probably towards the top of the list. their public transportation is so efficient, times are clearly posted, and signs on trains clearly mark the current and upcoming three stops. this train station is no exception. westbahnhof marks the intersection of major subway, tram and train lines in western vienna. the reisezentrum is conveniently located at the entrance to westbahnhof on the first floor, for those of us that need help purchasing regional and international train tickets. the platforms are well organized, clearly marked, and CLEAN. and the entire train station is indoors, offering shelter from the heat in the summer and from the cold in the winter. that being said, this is one of the smaller stations i've been in. thus, there's less restaurants and other shops inside. there's a lot of construction outside, which takes away from the beauty of the station itself and only adds to the confusion of trying to figure out where to go. read more

I realised yesterday that I have checked in here at least 30 times, but I still haven't written a review about Westbahnhof! I spend here SO much time. It is actually a decent train station. Yes, it is not the best and not the nicest, however, it is better then many others. It is quite clean and has got many shops and cafes. I only feel a bit uncomfortable here on Sundays when all the creepiest people on Earth come here to hang out and also I think that the underground area of Wesbahnhof does not leave the best impression (I mean the area where you go to U3 and U6, with Burger King and U3 Shop) - you should better watch your pockets there. But nobody forces you to come here on a Sunday and you can also go through the underground area imagining that your life depends on how fast will you get through it and see - after a few seconds you are out of there. read more

Westbahnhof is the place you will most likely end up at. Not that it is a bad thing of course - it's not crowded and dirty like Penn Station in NYC - here there's light, decent food, and it's clean. Even though they are going through renovations I barely noticed. It's how I remember it when I last was there, busy, clean, and efficient. We had lots of snowboarding luggage which we hauled across the station. It took us all of 4 minutes to find a taxi that could haul us to our hotel. Although its a train station - I would have no problem using this as a main hub if I were living in Vienna. It deserves a rating of 4 stars - and even still, find me a 'crappy' railway station in Austria and its still 10X better than NYP and Union Station... read more

I guess it's one of the better train stations in the world, although I still couldn't find a place to just seat and wait for your train. You can either buy food/drink and have a seat there or you're forced to roam the sprawling two story mall that this station seem to have grown into. There are a few lounges for certain train operators, but ours apparently didn't have one. I ended up at a place call Don Cubes, a smoking bar lounge. It calmed my nerves with some good second hand smoke. Kids are allowed there too, for their dose of second hand nicotine. read more

One of the most modern, clean and sleek looking shopping complexes in Vienna, that's because it is the newest! Nevertheless, the exterior is really quite unimpressive and disappointing for a new complex. Still, it gets the job done. Westbanhof connections locally and also ex-Austria are available from here. Main competitors are ÖBB (the state subsidised money losing organisation) and a newer competitor called Westbanh which is being run to the ground by the politics of running against ÖBB. But back to the complex: you have food outlets, supermarkets (Merkur), shopping, services and a host of other offerings. Quite nifty all in one joint, in my opinion. Points deducted for the ugly exterior but still for Vienna Like. read more
