We were in PEI for a family vacation in September and we made a special trip into Charlottetown to enjoy the sights but also to come to the Root Cellar for some essentials that we needed back at our cottage. Among the things that I came in looking for was activated charcoal and admittedly I was a bit disappointed that the store did not carry it. It was explained to me by the sales assistant that the local supplier does not have this particular item in their inventory but they were working on locating it elsewhere. Despite not being able to get activated charcoal, I was truly impressed with the selection of products. The Root Cellar must have the best selection of Weleda products outside of Switzerland! And a huge assortment of all-natural toothpaste and personal hygiene products and lotions specifically designed for babies. Also, in the back of the store there is an impressively large selection of non-perishable grocery items. I walked out of the store with a bunch of things and wishing that there was a Root Cellar in Montreal.

Plus it's great to support a small business. Bookmark also has a location in Halifax. This store is long and narrow with one side stocked with books and the other with art supplies. That's something else that makes it unique; get your art and books on art in the same location! Even though the only "artsy-craftsy" thing I do is knit, it is always a pleasure to check out the sketchpads, pens and other supplies. They also have stationery. I always find something to buy in this store simply because it seems to have different titles than the big-box stores. Also, because it's on the Island, it has books by their local authors you simply won't find anywhere else. I do wish it was a bit bigger with a leeetle more selection, but that would defeat the purpose, wouldn't it?

Reservations are required and we were on the wait list before receiving a call that we were in. The space is an old church that has been updated beautifully with a large kitchen, two elevated seating areas and enough space for a table that seats 20. Our dinner started with charcuterie with oysters and littlenecks being shucked by the oyster farmer himself. There is a small bar with bottles of wine, a signature cocktail, beers, and you can do pairings for the meal. If you order a bottle of wine, the staff will keep it cold for you and refill as needed. We met the chef and they did a brief lobster preparation demo and discussed the meal. After meeting our dining partners for the night, we found seats at the table and started with a beautiful salad of local greens and a homemade green goddess dressing. Next, family-style platters with potatoes, carrots, and green beans were brought out followed by huge trays of mussels, lobster, and littleneck clams, and then bowls of local sausage with gravy. The food was over the top fantastic and there was so much to eat. For dessert, there were fresh biscuits, strawberries, and cream. It was a nice light end to such a great dinner. The staff truly care about the experience and make the experience seamless. We even ran into Derrick, the owner, at a local cheese shop the morning of our dinner, and he was excited to meet us and chat with us at dinner.
