History
Established in 1980.
Wild Oats was launched by Mike and Loes Abrahams, who had both left he European Space Agency in Holland having realised that people seemed to know more about space than they did about nutrition, The enterprise started out as a small wholefoods shop off the Whiteladies Road in Redland, Bristol. After 7 years of steady growth the shop expanded into the premises next door, more than doubling its size. It was at this time that we realised that many people's diets and the nutritional quality of the foods available were so poor that nutritional supplementation was essential for the majority of the population and so we started to research and stock the best quality nutritional supplements. Research into the power of natural products to heal and provide safer alternatives to the drugs commonly used to treat chronic disease resulted in a gradual extension of our natural remedies department, and natural skin and body care products quickly followed and have continued to grow ever since.
Meet the Business Owner: Mike A.
Mike Abrahams - founder & owner
In late 1979 Mike and his Dutch girlfriend Loes were both working at the European Space Technology Centre in Noordwijk. Mike had been actively looking for a way out and, being passionate about natural wholefoods and macrobiotics, ended up buying The Larder, a small natural food store which had come on to the market in Bristol. The Larder was a tiny, split level shop in the basement of an old Victorian building but both Mike and Loes could see the potential.
Mike and Loes opened the shop in 1981, having never worked in retail before, but their knowledge and passion meant that the business continued to grow in popularity building up a strong and loyal customer base which remains at the heart of the business today. In 1987 the business expanded into the premises next door, and in 2013, Wild Oats became a limited company, with Mike and Loes currently the only Directors.
