The cabin was lovely for our stay - exactly the accommodations we needed with a kitchenette, teas and coffees, and some incredible shower water pressure. The local recommendations guidebook led us to the Glow Worm Dell and Kharun Thai, two of the highlights of our time in Hokitika. The office receptionist recommended Hokitika Gorge to us at checkout which was a highlight of our trip!

Though I have experienced better hotels overall, it is definitely worth the price it is. I demoted one star due to the lack of vegetarian dishes at the downstairs restaurant, as they offered only two dishes: the flatbread (delicious, might I add) and the soup of the day, tomato and capsicum. However, they do provide gluten-free dishes, and what we ate for dinner was simply fantastic. The fish was fresh and excellently-cooked, the steak (medium-rare is what I order) could have been cooked a tiny bit better but was near-perfect combined with the fries, egg, gravy, and pepper sauce. The pasta was deliciously creamy and filling, definitely worth the price. The flatbread, pesto and Parmesan, as well as the chili and mozzarella, was divine, would definitely recommend buying a couple for the table. Excellent, highly-commended service at the restaurant and reception, very friendly and willing to help. As for the rooms, they are spacious, cleanly: not the most modern of rooms but the fantastic beds make up for it: may be the most comfortable mattress I've slept on. The bathroom was definitely a show-stopper, with a spacious shower, clean, modern, fresh feel and complimentary goodies along with the room. The coffee and tea selection was fantastic, and the milk was very appreciated. I would recommend this hotel to families: we booked twin rooms and were very impressed and pleased, to say the least.

A quaint little spot, I chose a table near the dining area's wood stove, which was keeping the space at a comfortable level on a breezy spring day. The lovely little hostess I encountered upon arrival also functioned as server for the day, so I allowed her a bit of grace about being quick to attend to my needs. The kitchen needed no grace whatsoever, as they turned out a delightful and filling plate of roast lamb and potato chunks, smothered in a rich brown gravy. A bit of melty cheese and a dollop of sour cream topped the plate. Comfort food at its finest -- though it would have been nice to see it accompanied by a brown bread and perhaps some asparagus or carrot. I selected the large option, which filled a dinner plate on its own, so while the bread or veg would have made for great accompaniment I can't say for sure that i could've eaten any more food! Driving led me not to sample any of the alcoholic options the Kingfisher offered, though the bar menu was substantial in its offerings (especially for a rural spot) and I was indeed tempted.

Shower has no lip on the floor so its the kind that gets water all over everything that this part of the world seems to love so much. No bugs and a nice big heater to keep the place warm at night.
