You don't have to know me that well to get a sense that I'm no artist. I had trouble with…read morepaint-by-number, for the love of Dali. I do, though, have lots of great, artistic friends, and they took me to the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center. What a delight. It is in the old First Akron Bank building, right on the mall on the north end, just before it becomes a street again. Chock full of student-created work, there is a huge gallery, several class rooms, studios, a kitchen, on and on and on, all for the local artist. It reminds me exactly of my college campus art building, but with way more people of other ages, from teens to near hundred-and-teens. Two other great reasons to love this place. It is non-profit. AND it is self-sustaining, through membership and their classes and workshops. When I hear discussions of what it takes to revitalize a downtown, I imagine a bunch of places just like this one: using an older building (you kids would know it as "re-purposing") for a newer idea, in this case art, but also music, and library, and metal shop and... oh, sorry. I went back to high school for a minute, there. Keep our downtowns from falling into ruin. Consider enrolling in a class here, but at least visit the place for a tour or an exhibition. (Oh, and there are a few off-street parking spaces in back, along the river, if you can find them.) Ars longa, vita brevis.

Attended a student art show last night with a friend who teaches a class at PCA. There were so fantastic pieces created by the adult students. In addition of course there were other exhibits that we were able to tour. When I was in art school this was a place we visited often. Time to get back in the swing of things. The gift shop is still fantastic and filled with lots of unique items.

After brunch at Square cafe we needed to take a little walk and absorb some rays. It is a very serene setting and once they get the fountain running I may just come to sit and ponder. The building is so big and they offer many summer art classes so check out the website to see what they have. Events are held here all summer, mostly weddings. I went in to see the printmaking lab, I mostly do screenprinting but they don't have the light tables or screens here. The receptionist was so helpful and said that there would be printmaking classes over the summer and to call one of the directors to see what they might be able to do for me in regards to the type of medium I want to work with. If you need a place to do intaglio or relief printing they have a great space to print!

I was looking for art classes in CLE and stumbled upon Art House, which is a nonprofit organization…read moredevoted to making art accessible to their Brooklyn Centre neighborhood as well as Greater Cleveland. They offer visual and creative arts classes for people of all ages and skill levels. Shortly after learning about Art House I signed up for a six week pottery on the wheel class. I had never used a pottery wheel before, and I really enjoyed it (even though I'm not too great at it). The instructor, Billy Ritter, was fantastic. Really helpful, friendly and laid back. He is also very diplomatic with his comments on our less than perfect creations throughout the weeks. I took the class solo but was really happy with the group setting and made friends with the other people in the class. I also attended a glass mosaic class that was a good time. Art House offers a large variety of classes for adults, kids and kids with family members, and open studio time for ceramics as well. These would make excellent gifts! The classes are also great if you're looking to do something on your own or with friends. Art House offers summer programs for kids, birthday parties, etc. AH has a large variety of things to offer and they change/update them every few months. AH currently offers monthly "Sippin' in the Studio" single night classes in which they provide a few glasses of vino to get your creativity flowing and range from glass mosaics to jewelry making. Jodi was a calm and easygoing instructor who gave plenty of instruction. She let us pick our patterns and glass colors and offered expert advice. We worked on the projects over two sessions, so we had plenty of time to finish our projects. I never felt rushed and I learned proper techniques. I will definitely go back and take another class at Jodi's studio.

However, I have been affiliated with the university in some way or another throughout my life. Whether for film festivals, librabry visits, collabs with the art school I attended, seeing President Obama speak, or attending ska shows (that's right, back in the day it was the place to be for a good show), I have spent a lot of time on campus. It was a nice walk from my place in Bloomfield as well. The campus is beautifully landscaped with gorgeous buildings. The architecture is just wonderful. Staff and faculty that I have come in contact with over the years are stellar human beings.

I discovered them before I even completed my move to the area and started taking classes as soon as I arrived. You can choose between 6 week courses or short workshops. I've learned a lot and the instructors are wonderful! Plus, studies prove that creating art is good for everyone, no matter your skill level! If taking classes isn't your thing, you can browse the shop for gifts by local artists or attend the yearly art fair, Art by the Falls that Valley Art Center sponsors.
