Community Arts Center is a branch of the Cleveland Museum of Art and houses a gallery with lots of colorful, huge, exciting pieces of art created for and used during the Parade on the Circle! This gallery space is beyond inspiring which upbeat music playing and colors galore. They also have four art rooms decorated with large murals, tables, and art supplies. These rooms are set up with make-and-take art projects that are free to the community and they also offer art classes and events. This was such an amazing find and now I can't wait to bring all my friends here!

You don't have to know me that well to get a sense that I'm no artist. I had trouble with…read morepaint-by-number, for the love of Dali. I do, though, have lots of great, artistic friends, and they took me to the Cuyahoga Valley Art Center. What a delight. It is in the old First Akron Bank building, right on the mall on the north end, just before it becomes a street again. Chock full of student-created work, there is a huge gallery, several class rooms, studios, a kitchen, on and on and on, all for the local artist. It reminds me exactly of my college campus art building, but with way more people of other ages, from teens to near hundred-and-teens. Two other great reasons to love this place. It is non-profit. AND it is self-sustaining, through membership and their classes and workshops. When I hear discussions of what it takes to revitalize a downtown, I imagine a bunch of places just like this one: using an older building (you kids would know it as "re-purposing") for a newer idea, in this case art, but also music, and library, and metal shop and... oh, sorry. I went back to high school for a minute, there. Keep our downtowns from falling into ruin. Consider enrolling in a class here, but at least visit the place for a tour or an exhibition. (Oh, and there are a few off-street parking spaces in back, along the river, if you can find them.) Ars longa, vita brevis.

I showed up about 20 minutes before showtime and was able to easily find a parking space in their lot. Compared to a place like Playhouse Square, this place is a lot tinier, which makes the whole experience feel a lot more intimate. During intermission, my friends and I took a look at the art on display and purchased some drinks and snacks. They didn't have a huge selection, but enough to pick from. I'd love to come back and see another show!

Artists Uncorkd communicated to me that I would receive a proof a couple days before the event. Great, all set! Then, something came up and I wasn't able to attend the event. I emailed to ask if I could get a refund and got NO RESONSE, I emailed again and got NO RESPONSE. The easiest thing to do is email someone back. So I wasted the $45 I paid and never got the refund. Even if they emailed back to say they can't refund the money, I would be fine with that, but NO RESPONSE seems intentional. UPDATE: Immediately after writing this review I suddenly got an email saying "you've been refunded, it takes a few days", no apology or explanataion. Wonderful! Would have loved that communication a week ago.

Much of the museum is accessible without cost and has great interactive displays that are family friendly. Recent special exhibits included Tiffany lamps and Michelangelo. Recently I came to see the art inside the CIA as my friend took classes there and said it was an…read moreinteresting building with cool student art displayed- however as we were walking around looking at art displayed one of the security guards above us on the next floor seemed very suspicious of us, stopping us from above and and asking if we "need anything". We explained how my friend was showing me around and even asked if we should leave as he was kind of rude and it was very odd but he just nodded at us and said to keep going. We ended up leaving anyways due to feeling awkward and a bit upset. It was just a weird experience considering my friend took classes there and other friends of mine who have taken classes/not taken them at CIA have went in to look at the art/building inside. Not really sure what was up with that but am a bit put off on seeing art there now unfortunately.

Jodi was a calm and easygoing instructor who gave plenty of instruction. She let us pick our patterns and glass colors and offered expert advice. We worked on the projects over two sessions, so we had plenty of time to finish our projects. I never felt rushed and I learned proper techniques. I will definitely go back and take another class at Jodi's studio.

I discovered them before I even completed my move to the area and started taking classes as soon as I arrived. You can choose between 6 week courses or short workshops. I've learned a lot and the instructors are wonderful! Plus, studies prove that creating art is good for everyone, no matter your skill level! A small yearly membership fee quickly pays for itself with discounts too. If taking classes isn't your thing, you can browse the shop for gifts by local artists or attend the yearly art fair, Art by the Falls that Valley Art Center sponsors. Or shop the gallery for works by local artists. It's a wonderful way to decorate your walls with truly unique works. Why grab a mass print at a chain store when you can buy one of a kind? And if you don't see something just right on your first visit, come back. The art in the galleries and shop changes regularly. Valley Art Center is an important and valuable resource for the community, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Today I got a REALLY bad cut from a newbie (see photos)....Both hilarious and disturbing. And I can't believe the guy who was helping the newbie let me leave with my hair looking like I just left my redneck trailer. I had to use the hair trimmers to cut it all off. Could have given myself a military cut and saved the time and money.
