Having been to Edgewood a small few times I have to say this place I had no idea about. Looking for something new my best friend and I decided to check it out. I didn't know what to expect other than nature and thought of it to be a hiking trail. When I checked into the office/ gift shop the woman at the register gave us a run down and that's when it became apparent it was like a zoo with rescue animals. Entering the park we were given a map of the trail and how to navigate through the park. We found more than just animals there were little trails and vintage artifacts scattered through the park. They had an array of different animals including birds, a bear, some coyotes, bobcats and many others. Each habitat had a information plaque that explains obviously their name as well as how they came to be there. The place was much larger than I'd anticipated and considering all the sites we saw it took me and my best friend about two hours to complete the entire trail. I definitely plan to return to see this place when it's much warmer out and hopefully when covid has subsided. Staff was very friendly, welcoming, and covid compliant! read more

4.5 stars A great place- how had I not known about it before. I found out about it from the New Mexico outdoor expo. Military gets in free and adults are $8. It's just a little ways off the freeway. They have a gift shop with ice cream and stuffed animals. Staff was extremely knowledgeable. But, the neat part about this "zoo" is that it gives injured or rescued animals another chance at life (almost all native to New Mexico). Some of the stories were sad to read about. But, we saw everything from owls, hawks, coyote, deer, elk, antelope, (didn't see the bear that day), mountain lions, javelina, skunk, eagle. The place is laid out easy and there's a nice walking path through the park. There was only a few other people that day (a Wednesday in late October). Can't wait to return for a Chuckwagon supper! We stopped in on the recommendation of a coworker and it lived up to expectations. The park took about two leisurely hours to complete. It is clear that the animals are well loved and properly cared for. We were able to quietly watch the handlers as they were engaging some of the rescues - and we were very impressed. Worth the trip. I'd lived in Albuquerque nearly ten years before I discovered the Petroglyph National Monument. I'd just gone through a huge breakup and I was driving the outskirts of town, pumping punk rock through the speakers, when I came across the visitor center entrance. I'll never forget what the Park Ranger said when I sheepishly admitted my virgin visit. "Something we rangers learn, we'll travel across the whole world, without ever checking out what's in our own backyard." Add Wildlife West's Chuckwagon Supper Shows to my list of backyard gems I wish I would've discovered decades back. For a low, low price, you and your homies, or your partner, or just your own desperately single self, can come visit some of the sweetest little rescued creatures around (really, there are domesticated coyotes who desperately want your attention), sit down for a falcon show that's honestly eye-opening, and then settle in for a heapin' helpin' of cowboy grub (with a vegetarian option) and some seasoned Bluegrass. All of this, overlooking the golden plain of Moriarty which, on a reasonably cool summer eve, can calm even the worst of scorned lovers. read more

I.Love.This.Place. I haven't been much of a zoo person, but here in Albuquerque I've really enjoyed what we've got because of them emphasis on habitat & natural feeding. (I can not believe people complain about that!!) Well this takes that to the next level. Wildlife West is a zoo for rescued local wildlife, not an exotic animal zoo. You will not see a zebra here! But you WILL get to feel extremely up close to nature as wolves, bears, porcupines, elk, coyotes, and more wander around their large habitats and you are able to spot them out among the trees. If you're from Southern CA, think Wild Animal Park, not LA Zoo. I'd never been and in fact had never heard of this park. I went today for one of their regular events, a fiber arts festival. Admission is only $9/adult (unsure of other prices or discounts) and that includes events like this. Their chuckwagon events on Saturday night are a bit more at $27/person, but that's admission, dinner, and music. You can not beat that price!! It was hot today, so keep that in mind when planning your trip. Since these are all local critters though, they are right at home and will certainly be visible! (A lot sleep during the hottest part of the day, but that's super adorable and you can usually find them without even needing binoculars.) The entire place is nearly completely wheelchair-accessible and there are benches at every enclosure. It's a bit of a walk, but it's enjoyable and available to all ages. Gift shop has clothes, souvenirs, and ice cream & cold drinks. The park facilities can be rented out for your party or event too for VERY affordable prices. They provide the space, table, and chairs; you bring in your own food (alcohol not allowed) and you have admission to the zoo included. If you want an event to go beyond their 6:00pm closing time, there is an extra tiny fee for security for the extra hours. I HIGHLY recommend you take advantage of this well-priced, family-friendly attraction we've got RIGHT in our backyard! read more

This place has a really funky cool vibe. It's for people who can see what this place is imagined to be, and aren't drawn to fancy finishes and lots of flash & show. It has a demure coolness to it. The animals are well cared for, they have a bird show quite often and you can learn a lot about them. The speakers are quite knowledgeable and the food for the chuck wagon dinner is good but not mind-blowing-- however for the experience and the live music the whole thing can be downright fun and I think definitely worth the cost and experience. It's wonderful for the summertime when you want to get up to the mountains to escape the heat and sounds of the city. You can hear the crickets at night and the birds. With the sun shining and the beautiful warm weather today the kids and I decided that we wanted to do something outdoors and as we had never ventured to the WildLife West Nature park we decided today was the perfect day to go and check it out. So we packed up a picnic lunch, bundled into the car and off we went... It was an Easy, pleasant drive from Albuquerque and my GPS had no issues getting us there always a plus. As we pulled up in the parking area there was only 3 others cars there it was very peaceful. The young lad in the gift store was very helpful, he gave me a map and explained the exhibits to us and they also had scavenger hunts for the children which my kids LOVED. I will start by saying dont go into this place with the mindset of it been a zoo like others have mentioned its a animal sanctuary and each animals "home:" has an information board telling you the animal/s name and story behind the reason why they are there. My 8 year old twins really enjoyed reading about all of the animals and the fun facts. It was so peaceful and quiet walking around and it wasn't until we were 1/2 way around the park that we saw other people, my 2 year old was able to be out of his stroller and walking around without me worrying that he is going to get lost or knocked over which he loved because he rarely gets the freedom to do that with most places we go to been so crowded. I also had no issues with the stroller everywhere was accessible. We stopped and ate lunch in the amphitheater there are tons of covered seating so that was nice. Everyone agrees that this little gem is a keeper & we are going to return in the summer and check out the chuck wagon dinner events. read more

We love this place!! There are a few things here and there they need to work on such as the overall look and restrooms. Can't really expect much though as they're small and probably don't get as much revenue. Everyone should come at least twice! You won't regret it! This place makes me sad! In fact, if Yelp offered sad emojis I'd be using a slew of them. As a side note, those would be a lot more beneficial than Yelp asking us if there's a gender neutral bathroom every time I check in somewhere. Anyway, once upon a time I'm thinking this place was something to see! In its Western Glory and true hayride fashion, kids would pour in to take a peek at coyotes and mountain lions up close and personal. I envision Wild West shows with good guys in white and bad guys in black sneaking up behind and shooting them in the back like the dastardly, cowards they always are. But alas, those glory years have passed, just as the glorious mullet has, never to be seen again, save a few NASCAR events. Now it's run down and barren, crying for some attention by any child with a toy cowboy gun willing to travel. Don't get me wrong, it's not like the proprietors intentionally let her slip away, it's just the nature of our society. No one gets excited over this type of place anymore, and that's the real sad part. Because I believe they still serve a purpose as a rescue shelter for the few wild animals that still reside here. If only they could market themselves outside the local area where residents haven't been there and done that, they might have a chance at redemption. If so, I'd be rooting for them! Loved loved loved! $9 for an adult, free for kids under 5 - what a perfect morning. We were almost the only ones there on a Sunday morning, so we were able to take our time. Just over 1mi all the way around on their paved sidewalk route, and plenty of benches to rest along the way if needed. Highlights - the close-up area to see the mountain lions, and, in general, how close you could see all the animals. They also have cool pieces throughout, like the big school bus and other big artsy signs (terrible description, sorry!). I would definitely come back for an easy morning outing! read more

Fabulous animal sanctuary zoo. Each Animal has been rescued. Some are unable to live on their own because they are attached to humans and it makes them less likely to survive in the wild. Others have been hurt and therefore cannot survive either yet they are given shelter at the zoo. I definitely recommend giving yourself at least three hours to explore. It really is a unique experience. Your family will love it! I want to check out the chuckwagon dinner's and plan to do so soon. Please give it a try and perhaps donate some money if you can. My boyfriend and I had the most amazing day here. All the animals were treated well and looked healthy. Also, at each exhibit, the plaque explained why they were homed at the park. If this is your first time visit to New Mexico, or you live here and you've never been to Wildlife West Nature Park! You should visit! This place is amazing! Its only a 20 minute trek on I-40 east towards the Sandias in a small town called Edgewood. This place is filled with treasures and is the most peaceful "zoo" I've ever been to. All the animals here are native to New Mexico and are cared for in such an amazing way. I got to see this guy there today who has been hanging out with the rescued mountain lion for the past 8 years. They are buds and hang out everyday. (amazing) I did a pre-exploration today because I will be going on a field trip with my middle schoolers next Wednesday, what a great place to spend the afternoon. The trails are easy and some are paved (wheelchair access) You should also know that t his place is all volunteered runned! I was told that its the only "zoo" in the world that is build by "kids/ youth" ages 14-25 years old. Also known as the "Youth Conservation Corps Project, in collaboration with the New Mexico Wildlife Conservation (on site). The area is very "green" friendly, most of their materials seems to be donated, and some of the adobe fences around have been built with recycled tires, chicken wire and stucco. They are very dedicated to keeping the animals in their native habitat, and creating an environmental education center for children and adults. Lets continue to keep our world this way! Really, what's not to like? If you're into animals you should love this place because it is a rescue facility, and it's open to the public. So, not only are these animals being saved and cared for, people can learn about them and see them (relatively) up close. Now, if you're looking for some fancy zoo experience, this is not it. This is a pretty low-scale operation, but from what I could see all the animals were adequately cared for and well fed. All the animals are indigenous to the area, and you even get to see some animals that are normally a little harder to spot, such as wolves. In addition, you'll see a bear and some exotic birds. I can imagine kids loving this place, as it is very open (yet easily navigable), with paths meandering to and fro. All in all, to have access to these animals and the educational opportunity they provide, in a place like Edgewood, is pretty awesome. read more

A zoo of sorts 30 minutes east of downtown Albuquerque, this place is an interesting alternative to the Rio Grande Zoo. For one, consider it an escape from the city and an opportunity to do a little trail walking. Two, the stories behind how the various birds, deer, coyotes and cats got here are interesting and comforting. It's nice to know that animals that otherwise would be slaughtered or left to die have a home. Three, getting to be up close and personal with a coyote and even getting to pet it make for quite a memory. The price is right too, at $7 a person. During the summer months, there are festivals and events here so be sure to check for that also. read more

This place is cute and peaceful. Its a rescue facility and not really a zoo so whatever animal you come across it's been rescued from some dire situation. I always get sad seeing animals in cages but I guess these animals are in better situations now than where they came from so I cant be too sad for them. The center is pretty big and spread out but there's not too many animals do don't expect aloe. I like how you're almost walking in a park. There's nothing fancy here, just animals and nature. The girl working the gift shop and admission was very sweet and helpful and answered any questions we had. If you're in the area and want to be one with nature I'd def check it out. read more
