I had to repeatedly ask her to clarify what she was telling me. I did not receive any printed information on preparing for this procedure or what to expect or even if I could drive home on my own. In addition, she chastised me when I told her my pain level. Why ask that question if you don't take patients seriously. So I did what healthcare professionals tell us NOT to do, I had to look the information up on the internet. turns out that I do need a driver and a day off work which I did not prepare for. Sad when AI is your only hope. I have been with Excelsior for years and years. The changes that have been made in procedure and healthcare "professionals" are not an improvement for patients. I guess we all have to live with progress now that excelsior is a huge conglomerate and not patient centered. PS c Cori is not the only PA at excelsior who could take lessons from the frontline staff who are kind and respectful. Needless to say I am verry concerned about going through with the procedure.

I went to UBMD Orthopedics Physical Therapy at the Maplemere location to see if I could strengthen the knee to prep for or possibly delay TKR surgery. The UBMD PT department is where I faced issues. At that time, it was difficult to walk stairs or even 50 yards. The young PT I was assigned plugged me into a "one size fits all" rehab program. It did not help that my PhD therapist was impersonal, distracted & inattentive, and his subordinates did most of my therapy that he designed. The exercise program I was given made my pain much worse, decreased my mobility and was generally detrimental even after 6 months of dedicated effort on my part. I was getting discouraged. My knee got so painful from the assigned UBMD PT, I developed fluid in the knee joint and required multiple cortisone shots. Out of necessity, I ditched about 2/3 of the exercises I was given and all of the weighted exercises from UBMD PT and pivoted to body weight squats, knee stretching, yoga, walking & banded leg work. I borrowed from my boxing and martial arts experience from many decades ago emphasizing rotational knee movements, feints, front to back and side to side stepping. My knee slowly responded to my own custom designed PT treatment, and today I can walk stairs without issue, walk a mile, have minimal to no knee pain, no fluid on the knee and have not required any cortisone shots since early in 2025 which was from the UBMD PT exercises. I also don't require TKR at this time. Another UBMD PT issue is their glacial response time to calls for appointments - 2 weeks plus in my experience. The final issue at the new UBMD ortho office on Maplemere is the parking lot design - it's a miserable set up. The long, wide grassy "berms" installed in the parking lot present a dangerous maze to ortho patients who can have issues just navigating flat pavement. UBMD ortho should add flat "walk throughs" in those berms.

This review is specifically for…read morehim, because I was here last year to see another Doctor for another issue and that whole team was awesome. In a nutshell: my shin & ankle & foot (all on my left leg) feel like they're filling up with gas in the same way that your knuckles do when they feel like they need to be cracked. Except it had been getting worse, going from 'occasional' to 'every day, all day.' I'd take 20-30 steps and my whole left leg would sort of stiffen and it would be painful to walk unless I stopped and 'cracked' my shin, ankle, & foot. So I saw Dr Michael Freitas after being x-rayed. I showed him my walk and let him hear the cracking, and I had even printed out a diagram of the leg & foot and highlighted the areas that I was experiencing issues and pain. He said, very nicely, that "nothing was wrong" with me. Oh. So it's normal to have to stop ever 20-30 steps? Okay, then, cool? Also: how could he see and hear what I was talking about and *still* decide that nothing was wrong with me? And I am not a doctor, but the areas that I highlighted on the diagram are TENDONS, not bones. You CANNOT SEE TENDONS ON AN X-RAY, Dr. Freitas. You should listen to your patients, especially if they come in prepared. I *knew* the tendons would not have been visible on the x-ray, but instead of listening to me he decided the x-ray was 'proof' that I was a-okay. It has been a nearly a year since that appointment and my left leg is STILL doing this, every single day and night, all day and night. But, no worries! Dr. Freitas says this is normal!

Both Dr Ablove and his PA reported this was normal . I had x ray done somewhere else. Results showed non union fracture requiring surgery Fortunately I was able to have surgery elsewhere requiring a bone graft and plate in my wrist . This could have been prevented, if x rays were done during the healing process! Please do yourself a favor and avoid the prolonged pain and aggravation! Every staff member I came across during my visit was very kind and professional and personable. I felt like I was a regular patient here for years even though it was my first visit. Everything was done quickly. I checked in fast. Got to a room fast. Saw the doctor in minutes. Got X-rays done immediately. And no, nothing was an emergency. That's just how it went! We narrowed down my problem to being one of two things ... it was a little early to make a true call on it, especially when I don't remember ever injuring it, and he gave me a couple of suggestions of things I can do in the meantime while I wait a bit longer and see if the pain subsides. If I ever have to go back to this office, I'd be more than happy to! BTW, when my doctor referred me here, they actually reached out to ME FIRST, welcoming me to their office and eager to set up an appointment for me. Really wonderful to be seen and heard as a patient. If you're ever referred here, do not hesitate. You're in great hands!

The girls at desk seemed overworked or just annoyed. The PA was abrupt, loud and didn't introduce herself right away. It was a bit awkward. In past years we felt a strong staff, personable Medical Providers and never felt our consultation was rushed. We waited for a nurse to show my daughter how to properly put on her ankle brace, and after 30 minutes of feeling claustrophobic in room, we just left to check out. We had actually been in that room for over an hour.. The one girl at desk didn't apologize or offer help, she just said "their busy with Patients". My thought was, we've already waited 2 hours & we are a Paying Patient too. Something needs to change in the Medical world asap.

Dr. Geraci is great. Of the few physiatrists I've seen over the years, I feel he is the most…read morecompetent, understanding and flexible in scheduling. He also has a keen eye for reviewing MRIs. A recent injury required me to receive an MRI after PT was not fully able to address and relieve the pain. That MRI report came back unremarkable, even though I had a concerning amount of pain and discomfort. My PCP scheduled an appointment with a different physiatrist who also claimed to have reviewed the film and said there was nothing wrong in the area of concern and that it was absolutely coming from a previous injury elsewhere. I was not content with his findings so I went to Dr. Geraci for a second opinion. What I immediately appreciated is that he performed a physical evaluation first to check for symptoms prior to reviewing the images and report in order to have an unbiased opinion. After the physical exam, he felt there was an issue in the area that initially came back unremarkable and then went to review the images. Within five minutes, he found the protrusions on the MRI images that everyone else missed. As a result, the report was re-reviewed and amended by another radiologist who concurred with Dr. Geraci's findings. Had I not gone to Dr. Geraci for a second opinion,, I'm not certain my injury would have healed and potentially could've gotten worse. Highly recommend.

I am a medical professional myself, so perhaps more sensitive to this than someone without medical education. Also, this is a long standing problem so don't tell me what/how I feel! He did send me for a special type of PT/pain management but the PT scheduling was erratic (no fault of PT or MD). When I went back to Geraci for reevaluation, he told me I may as well stop as it didn't do any good. I explained that it had been inconsistent & perhaps we should try it a bit longer. He waved me off, and offered no other treatment options. I waved him off and found a new physiatrist.

I recently had my hip replaced by him, and the whole experience was run smoothly, cared for at every turn by his wonderful team. Dr. Romanowski and Dr. Cindy Romanowski check on you as you recover, to make sure everything is perfect, and all needs are met. I am SO grateful for their treatment.

Eventually I learned that every patient, like myself, was accompanied by their driver. As patients were taken back, the driver was told to wait in their car and that they would be called when the person they accompanied was ready for discharge. The waiting area cleared out quickly. Michael, my nurse, was super efficient and knowledgeable, friendly and reassuring. He never acted rushed or impatient, even as I rambled about nothing at all (probably I was nervous). The procedure staff was also friendly and efficient, seeming to make my comfort and relaxation their chief priority. My doctor, Alok Gupta, talked with me prior to my entering the twilight zone. Conscious sedation is what the anesthesia is called. But unconscious sedation might be more accurate. I remember saying "ow" a couple of times, but absolutely nothing else until Michael brought me the bag of my clothes and said he'd walk me out when I was ready. My daughter was already inside and waiting for me. The after procedure notes were extensive, and clearly understandable. If you need an endoscopy or colonoscopy, I recommend you make sure your doctor will be able to send you here.

This isn't their fault, but it does mean that you aren't likely to be treated as thoughtfully or thoroughly as you should be in a perfect world. Oftentimes I will have an issue, get an appointment quickly, be seen very briefly, and leave with an RX in hand. And most of those times, that is all I truly need and I'm satisfied with that. I liked seeing Dr. Semidey because she was very bright and astute, but she has left the practice recently. One of the worst visits I had was a same-day visit I requested because the lymph nodes in my throat had been painfully swollen for a few days. I saw a male doctor whose name I can't recall and he dismissed me completely. He said it was likely due to allergies and recommended I take allergy medications that I already take daily because yes, I do have allergies! I knew that this wasn't a typical symptom for me. The next day, I could barely speak and was in immense pain. I had tonsillitis. The office was helpful when I called back and prescribed me antibiotics, but I would never accept an appointment with a male physician again. I have been reassigned to Dr. Jacobs now that Dr. Semidey is not available. The advice I would give to patients (in general, not just Highgate patients) is to inform yourself as much as possible so you can best advocate for your care. Ultimately doctors are the authority, and I'm not the kind of person who is skeptical of the medical field as a whole, but knowing as much as you can about what is going on, what could be causing it, and what kind of solutions you're searching for can help you direct your care and advocate for your best outcome.
