Back in 1996, I was involved in a hit and run accident by a truck that ran a red light on Oak Grove and Treat in Concord. I was in my little VW bug and I was flipped over an island and into oncoming traffic. This took place while I was on my way to work at Genentech, Inc. in So. San Francisco where I had been employed since 1983. When they caught this man, he spoke zero English, had NO driver license had 0 insurance and was driving his employers truck without permission. I got NOTHING from this piece of.......t and the owner of the truck... filed Bankruptcy. The sad thing? I had to pay an attorney to get my uninsured motorist payout. This resulted in my having 5 spine surgeries...the first in November 1996 to repair a ruptured disc.... 3 more to fuse my spine level after level, the last to remove some of the hardware that was rubbing on and shearing my left leg nerve root.... I couldn't go back to work, which broke my heart, because I could no longer stand or sit for even short periods of time. I went out of work at the end of 1996, and had just assumed I'd go back some day, however, each surgery had a 12 month recuperating time. So, in 1998 I decided I better file for disability.... Of course, you get denied after the first request and that's when a friend of my family told me about John Wilbrand. He was with me while we filed for the 2nd time, knowing I would more than likely get denied. I had to go to one of the states doctors, who said I was fine....even tho I had neuropathy in my feet and legs and constant back pain.... Then in 2001 I finally got my chance to be heard in front of a Social Security Administrative Judge...the final plea to help me get some benefits, although it would never be my $52k I was making at Genentech. John had me come in to the office and prepare me for my hearing and to not get ALL dressed up but to instead dress down to actually look like the way I Actually feel. He gave me the tips of what to and not do....which is NOT to over act by moaning and moving around in my chair.... I told John, "I have no reason to 'act' or over act, I will just be me.", and that I did. While John presented my case to the judge, he did this with such passion and stressed to the judge how my life had been impacted due to my disability and lack of being able to do 85% of the activities I had done before this accident. Plus, all of the medications I was now on due to nerve damage, arthritis and depression ALL cause drowsiness and would prevent me from working. In the end, the judge dismissed the vocational person that sits in on most hearings, and gave me a FAVORABLE decision, and told me to go home and to take care of myself. Not only was it a favorable decision, it was a PERMANENT Disability. I wouldn't have to reappear over and over again but instead begin my new life....disabled. I have nothing but rave reviews for John Wilbrand. My husband and brother in law used him in the 90's and he was got both of them SSI after they had been denied at least two times. The SSI process is not an easy, he knows what needs to be done and has a good rapport with the judges who make the decisions. He prepares you in advance for the interview with the judge and helps gather the paperwork necessary to apply. I work for a non-profit and refer all my clients in need to him because I know that they will be well taken care, honestly and efficently. Great SSI lawyer knows the system well, and also knows the judges in oakland. hes very framiliar with the process and professional about it. He will prepare you for the hearing by asking you questions and getting you ready. He took care of all the paper work and talking 15 mins and we were finished at the court house. What a joke, reading these reviews makes me think they are fake. My experience was exactly the opposite. Unprofessional uncaring money hungry creep. Dropped my case 2 days before my hearing. Having had 3 surgeries in the 2 months prior to my case being heard was so stressful, but his tirade on the phone was unexcusable practically pushing me over the edge. mr. willbrand basically told me i had many ailments do recieve ssi benefits. after losing the first battle my wife had to remind the office to appeal. the date on the appeal paperwork was the day after my wife called. in the meantime his office lost my medical paperwork and i had to get it again. the appeal was shut down when we went to court. this all went on for over 4 years. i finally recieved a letter addressed to me asking if i wanted to appeal only it was written to someone else. im confused as to what he's done to truly help. at this point i realize that he's not interested in helping me. however if i find another attorney, willbrand will still demand his cut after his office has left me completely stranded. im very disappointed. i hope he will help me.
