IMO, these are recent policy changes, and failures in honesty, integrity, and ethics, by not properly disclosing all available options. Ever since Williamstown Savings Bank got purchased by MountainOne Bank, things certainly have changed, and in my opinion, not for the better. Recently, I received a notice, informing me that without any action on my part, my free checking account as of March 1, 2015 was going to change automatically to a checking account type where I would be charged roughly $5/mo ($60/year). The mailing I felt was sneaky and somewhat dishonest. Nowhere in the cover letter, was it mentioned that the account would be charged $5/mo. Only on page two in the list of features, did it mention that the account would have a monthly fee. Also, nowhere in the mailing I received, was a type checking account mentioned that the bank offeres, that could still be had for free at no charge! I'll get more into that shortly. Granted, the new checking account covers $20 worth of foreign ATM Fees each month, and also provides ID Theft Protection, but in my case, and I suspect for most people, those added features are unnecessary. There is only one other way to avoid the fees with the upgraded checking accounts, and that's if you choose the account that earns interest, and keep a $2500 minimum balance in there, but if you fall below that, you get socked for $10/mo. For example, in the recent case of Target, and other stores that are getting compromised recently, those companies when they get compromised, are already offering some level of credit monitoring for one year for you as it is for free. Also, if you don't already, by federal law, you're allowed to get a free copy of your credit report once/year from www.annualcreditreport.com. The report covers all three major credit bureaus.. Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian. If you're not already doing this once each year already, you should get a copy. Only after I called, and said I would have no choice to pull my money out of the bank, only then was I then told that Mountain One offered a free Horizon checking account that behaved exactly like my original account did. It had no ID Theft Protection, no foreign ATM fees covered, and was completely free. I shouldn't have had to call and explain I would have no choice, but to pull my money out of the bank in order to then be told that the free Horizon checking account existed. Also, the Horizon account should have been listed as an option in the mailing I received. In fact for all existing free checking accounts, it should have rolled over to the free Horizon account, and the paid checking accounts should have been the option! For MountainOne to list only paid checking account choices, leaving the free one out of the list of choices is very misleading. So, if you want a FREE checking account from this bank, go out of your way and ask for the Horizon account. You'll need to stop there in person and request the change before March 1, 2015 to avoid your checking account getting dinged the $5/mo fee. And oh, I'm sorry, it's $4.95, but when it's that close to $5, I call it what it is. It's also shorter to type. For me personally, because I felt the banks recent actions were deceptive in the way they advertised and rolled out the new accounts, failing to mention to me all reasonable available alternatives, I will likely be pulling my funds out of this bank before the end of the month when the fees hit. I am considering moving my mortgage as well. I'd had an account here for decades. Not anymore.

Off the bat I want to say that I am very happy with MountainOne and their services. They started out as multiple banks (Hoosac, Williamstown Savings, South Coastal) and unified as one financial institution named after Mount Greylock - the highest peak in the state of Massachusetts. They have a weird split footprint with 3 branches in the mountains and 3 branches hours away at the coast on the south shore. They had a branch in Danvers on the north shore but that has since closed. Account opening was a little rocky. The rep was courteous and demonstrated great customer service intent however he did not have answers to all of my questions and not everything was done right. He didn't have all the info regarding combining multiple checking account types onto the same statement and how that relates to their fee schedule. Also when testing the debit cards at the lobby atm, it took multiple attempts and some re-tweaking on the back end to get the multiple accounts linked to the cards correctly. Another weird thing was that they were sending me on my way with zero documentation of my new accounts - nothing with the account numbers or any other bank materials. They say they dont provide starter checks which is fine however I had to handwrite all my new account info on a scrap piece of paper. Ive never opened a new account and not received a welcome kit/materials from a bank before. All my sources of direct deposit require a voided check (i kno, right?? in 2020??!) so I told the rep we needed to order checks for each checking account. I waited 7 days and saw that the cost of the checks still had not been deducted from the accounts. I called M1's customer service phone line and confirmed what I suspected -- they had never been ordered. The phone customer service is amazing. The woman I spoke with ordered my checks and also got my account statements to be combined. She was helpful, responsive and pleasant to deal with. In the end everything was set up correctly and it has been smooth sailing ever since.

This bank was great for a while, until I moved. I could not drive 3 hours to cancel in person, so I…read moresent a cancellation via certified mail. Three months later, I get a letter saying my account was overdrawn and I owed the amount overdrawn + 3 overdraft fees. Apparently a utility I had automatically pulled from this account, an automation I certainly didn't agree to. I emailed back and forth with Berkshire Bank. A woman representative started out courteous but would not waive the fees. I explained that they should have told me months in advance that my account was overdrawn, she indicated their policy is to notify after the second overdraw. I informed her they did not do so, and allowed another month to pass. She finally told me had "spent enough time talking with me" and the balance remained. I told her that I wasn't going to pay for the fees, and if she really spent as much time as she actually did, she could have spell-checked her emails for grammatical errors so she didn't confuse me. Then they sent me to a collection agency (this was for about $100 or less). I emailed the President in complaint, and eventually the same woman returned my email saying they'd waive half the fees and cancel the account. I've since told friends, colleagues and organizations to avoid dealings with Berkshire Bank. It's too bad, they started out great, but they get you in the end.
