From personal experience, having lived alongside the 14th fairway for 18 years and having been a…read moremember for 2 years before I started university, I found this course to be both beautiful to play on and challenging at the same time. The variety of hole from short 100-yard par 3 to long 500 yard par 5s through the brilliant Cheshire countryside, make this a great course to play on. It provides a challenge with varying wind conditions, extensive foliage and water hazards throughout the course but its upkeep is pristine. Other facilities at this course include the big clubhouse/small golf shop, knock-up holes on the other side of the road from the course and a small putting green right before the first tee. This knock-up hole facility is available to all members at all times and is handy for ironing out problems in the swing, however I would recommend fetching a few hundred old golf balls from the garage before heading out as some are always lost throughout a warm-up. The putting green is exact replicas of the green speed and firmness out on the course so gives early indications to those heading out on the course of the greens on all 18 holes. The clubhouse itself has a pool room/function room and large bar area along with a balcony area for a perfect view down the 18th tee to watching the weary hacker or pro finish his round. The bar also has a large restaurant area for those wanting to hire out a large room for a function/wedding reception etc. The course itself during the summer months has pristine greens both undulating and simple ones dotted around, along with the added challenges of lakes, the canal and even a large wood separating tee to first fairway on the 13th hole (where I have fell victim many a time). Most holes provide a challenge with slanting/dogleg fairways with varying pace and ball carry at times. During the winter months, these pristine greens are unfortunately swapped with small winter greens which are essentially small slightly shorter parts of the fairway and unfortunately ruin the experience. Also, a tee-off mat must be bought and used throughout the round of golf to avoid divoting the ground during the winter months. Competition days are Saturdays and club games are played on Sundays and Wednesdays I believe. The membership cost is rather steep at £300 sign up fee plus £250 a year for an under 18 with adult pricing hitting nearly £700 a year. The course would have to be used regularly personally to get money's worth, but definitely worth it for the keen and regular golfer.

The hotel is located just off the A49 but when you enter the grounds, you're immediately transported into another world as you meander down the drive to the hotel, passing through the verdant green pastures of the golf course Once parked up, you wander into the main hotel, passing some fountains and a sign to the spa We received a warm welcome at reception, something which was to continue over the weekend. The staff were polite wthout sounding insincere and corporate in their greeting and enquiries, which was lovely. They were always available with information and keen to help where possible I had rung up before arrival to enquire about check in time and were told that we'd be able to check in early as we were travelling a long distance. At check in, we were then given a free upgrade to an executive room, which was a lovely surprise The hotel look very new and the executive room was very spacious. The bed did prove to be very comfortable. My sister avail herself of all facilities including the iron! The inclusion of a room safe was a welcome addition. The bathroom was large with a separate shower which could probably accommodate 8 in a game of sardines. Only slight criticisms are that the TV was probably a little small for the size of room and distance from the bed and that we couldn't find a way to adjust the temperature in the room, which ran a little warm at night - I was happy as I'm used to it but my sister must be more anglocised than me as she found it a little hard to sleep The spa has a leisure facilities including an 18m swimming pool, an ice room, various saunas and steam rooms. Spa treatments are available too on site We only had breakfast in the restaurant but it was probably the best hotel breakfast I've had. The breakfast buffet allows you to help yourself to cereal, fresh fruit, fresh bread and pastries and juices. Orders for hot breakfast items, toast and tea & coffee are taken at the table. The bed and pillows were big and comfortable. The sofa was also pretty roomy, and wow! What a huge bathroom! The food here is also excellent. I was warned about the traditional English breakfast, but they offer a vegetarian version here that is quite tasty. I also enjoyed an amazing wild mushroom risotto with locally-sourced greens and a pretty good pumpkin ravioli. Tea pastries also did not disappoint. Well, when they were available. I was annoyed to find that on one day of my visit, they were completely out before dinner time. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, even (or especially) to my noisy baby. She smiled and giggled at pretty much every person working there, who smiled and waved right back. Every time I called down to the desk, I was given accurate information in response to my many questions (What is the bus schedule? How far away is Beeston castle? Is there rain in the forecast? Why do you guys keep bringing us wine?), no matter the hour. Unfortunately, I did have to call the desk several times because the emails I sent in advance of our visit had gone unanswered. I am not sure why they have a query form on their web site if nobody ever checks it. I do recommend the spa, as well. Just be sure to book in advance. I tried booking on two days notice and was not able to get all the services i wanted, because the only opening left was right before they close for the evening. The massage was pleasant and relaxing, though, and the staff here were as friendly as their hotel counterparts. One drawback I encountered was regarding local tourism and activities. The pamphlets about local attractions were outdated, there is no shuttle or other convenient way to get to high street for the bus, and the road into Tarporley is frequently too muddy to walk without ruining one's clothes and shoes. If you come here without a car and want to do something other than golf, be prepared to hire a car at significant expense. Had I known this in advance, I would have stayed on Tarporley high street or perhaps even in Chester. Overall, I do recommend the Portal Hotel. Our stay was peaceful and enjoyable. I just wish we, and they, had been better prepared.

And to say St Pats is the breeding ground for the traditions of the town and rugby in general doesnt justify its importance and the depths it effects the town. Some famous players have come through its ranks and there are sure to be some more on their way as we speak as well as into the future. St Pats is the hub of the towns rugby and it does us proud year on year.

It is so big and it has so much! A huge playground, bowling greens, football (soccer) pitches, etc. There's a lake with ducks. You can rent a boat to row on the lake. There are cafes. There's an animal section. Lots and lots of places to picnic. Can't forget Heaton Hall! A wonderful way to spend the day.

Walked down the hill past the hall and round the lake, slowing to admire the signets and stop the dog munching all the food left for the birds! Round the other side of the lake, the woods are incredibly quiet; it's easy to forget you're right on the edge of such a large city and the motorway is about a mile away. This is the highest point in the city and the views are amazing.
