Standing here this afternoon with no other traffic in sign, the narrow deck didn't feel like a worry so much as a reminder of the era it came from, when J.B. Marsh's reinforced concrete rainbow design was modern engineering and rural crossings were built for slower, lighter vehicles. The bridge carries the name of two local servicemen who died overseas in the Argonne Forest during World War I, O. Glenn Dewlen and Harry F. Progress. The large marker is in very good condition at the side of the road and is easily readable. "During the Civil War, militias from both the Union and Confederate sides were stealing the Osages' cattle, harassing their villages, and blaming the Indians for raids actually committed by Americans. Osage leader Charles Mongrain cautioned everyone to leave his people alone: "I most earnestly warn all intruders, trespassers, and others not citizens of the Osage nation to leave the nation immediately." It continues, "In May 1863, a few miles east of here, an Osage hunting party confronted about 20 strangers riding through their territory. A shot was fired, and one of the Osage went down. His comrades chased the trespassers about 15 miles and finally overtook them near Drum Creek, killing all but two (who escaped). The strangers turned out to have been Confederate officers, marching west with orders to recruit volunteers and encourage rebellion in New Mexico & Colorado. The Osage has foiled the plot." Although they have public Wi-Fi, computers, copy and fax services, I mainly use it for borrowing books and dvds. Although I have used the copier. Sometimes I will sit in the comfortable reading area to read new magazines. It is very unusual if I don't visit at least once a week. They have many more services I don't even know about. And I try to never miss the book sale during the Artist Alley celebration. I truly love my local library!
