The Wilson County Courthouse in Fredonia is a clean mid-century Modern styled building completed in 1961. It is a two-story structure of cream brick, reddish flagstone, glass and concrete in the very center of town. On a quiet Sunday evening, it feels even more still, with the building locked up and only a couple of kids circling on bikes and pickup trucks.
Wilson County was created in 1855 and named for Colonel Hiero T. Wilson, a Fort Scott sutler, postmaster and prominent early Kansan. The present courthouse replaced an 1885 three-story brick and native-stone building. One of the best surprises when walking the grounds is the memorial clock tower which incorporates the original 1885 courthouse clock and stands just north of the building along Monroe Street.
