Does the Windjammer Motor Inn staff come from big families? I'm not sure what else could explain the good Yelp reviews, as this establishment has the charm of an hourly rate motel. But, then, I'm not sure sellers of illegal guns, couples married, just not to each other, or teen-age partiers would stay here more than once even if you could rent a room for just a few hours. So, what went wrong with our June 15-16 stay at the Windjammer? Let me count the ways: 1. We could not check in upon arrival. A woman behind the desk told us to come back later because, she said, she did not know the check-in procedure; 2. I guess the staff member for whom we had to wait to check in was not out buying air freshener, because our room smelled of cigarette smoke; 3. If you are in the mood for afternoon delight or need a power nap, prepare to be disturbed because there are no "Do Not Disturb" door hangers. It was not a matter of our room missing one. I asked the front desk clerk, who told me the motel does not provide them. That's got to add to the romance of a getaway with the one you love, having maid service knocking on your door when you want to be alone with one another; 4. Speaking of Windjammer maid service, there is little of which to speak, as one look at the dirty bathroom tells you. Bring your own Lysol, and, for that matter, shampoo; 5. I didn't know there had been a Superstorm Sandy Clearance Sale at the New Jersey Shore, but that must be where the Windjammer bought its furniture. See the photo I took; 6. I neglected to take another telling photo, that of the Windjammer Motor Inn sign, which promises daily breakfast. The motel does not serve breakfast every day, as I learned when the desk clerk told me their restaurant would not be open until later in the season. If you're like me, the New Ralph Kramden in you wants to avoid arguing too much, so I didn't protest that their sign promises breakfast or ask why they can't at least serve coffee and donuts in the lobby. If this were my only problem with the Windjammer, I might have asked, but by then I knew we would not return. But, what do I know? The Windjammer Motor Inn is still standing, despite its considerable flaws. I second the recommendation of a previous review, which says the owners should sell to someone who could make it worthy of its beachfront location. If the next Windjammer proprietor is at least aware of the New Jersey Smokefree Air Act that went into effect in 2007, that would be a start. read more

Beware do not stay at the Windjammer. I've stayed at some bad hotels, especially down the shore but this one takes the cake. It is absolutely disgusting and they must have all the locals meet on Fridays for free beers to write fake reviews. I stayed in a suite that cost me $370 a night as I have 2 children. We got one "king" was actually 2 twin beds pushed together and springs popping out of the bottom and the kids had to sleep on a couch that pulled out. The place is filthy, room will get you some disease and showing in pure septic water. I NEVER want any family to even think about staying in this dump and so much for using AI looking for a family friendly hotel away from the craziness at the boardwalk. This place is too far from the boardwalk and there is no shuttles, so you will have to drive there and pay to park $15-20 each night. I hope this saves at least one family from making the mistake we made staying here. I can't get the filth off me and we all have ptsd from this place yuk read more

Just finished a 4 night stay with my girlfriend in a suite. Room was very clean and the bed super comfortable which is very important for my back. This place was completely outdated and the room had a weird stench. My parents and I got a one bedroom with a "pull out couch". The bed was awful, and the pull out couch was a futon. The AC in the living room was noisy and did not work. They also mentioned having a microwave, which they did not. There was no coffee maker and we had to borrow a blow dryer from the front desk. This place had a ton of great reviews which were extremely misleading. They have a restaurant and bar but it closes at 8PM. The guests continue to party after hours, which kept me up late. The idea was that we would be at the beach at not in the room long but it was awful. They have a small kitchen area from the 70's. The drain clogged after cooking and there was nothing we could do about it. They leave you one ring bar of soap to use. So nothing to wash the l dishes with. The worst part is how over priced it was. $1,000 to stay in a dump? Please read the reviews and do not waste your money here. The family is nice, but that's not why you stay somewhere on vacation. The interior is a little outdated but the rooms are large, with a little kitchen space and bathroom is great. Staff was great and loved the location (literally a block away from the beach) with free access to a pool and the beach. We're currently here in the off-season, enjoying a couple of nights at the shore. The check in process was smooth and reminiscence of the good old days when you filled out your information on a card. The rooms are comfortable and the linens fresh with the bathroom being extremely clean. The following morning my wife inquired about coffee in the area at the front desk. The owner was kind enough to accommodate her with a freshly brewed cup on the spot. I call that very professional and well thought out customer service. Thanks for a good stay. read more

Wonderful place to stay. Very clean, very large rooms, no frills, but nice restaurant, delivery of course, and decent sized pool--not a tiny one photographed large. The BAD: 1. If you're a smoker then you've come to the right place. Everyone here smokes, or so it seems. Whenever I walked out of my room I would get blasted with a smoke cloud. Everywhere I went around this place, someone was smoking. If you don't smoke, stear clear of this place. 2. Wifi. I couldn't get any service from my 1st floor room the whole time. Talk about annoying. And when I let the guy at the desk know he acted like I was the first person with this complaint. He said he would reboot it, acted like it all all ok. Nothing. After 2-3 times of mentioning it, I gave up. It's not like I sit on my phone the whole time, but it's nice to have internet when you want it. Especially if they advertise they have it. 3. This place is old, basic and in desperate need of a makeover. If you forget your shampoo, you're out of luck. None here. 4. Overpriced for what you get. Just not a classy place by any stretch. The GOOD: 1. Location. Short walk to the beautiful, not overly crowed Seaside Park beach and boardwalk. 2. Friendly staff in the restaurant. We ate breakfast at their little diner every morning. 3. Family owned and operated for many many years...feels like coming home to visit. Staff is friendly and helpful. Love the pool and the patio for drinks after a long day at the beach (which is only a block away). The beach and hotel are family oriented, safe and comfortable. The rooms are a good size, could use a microwave in the mini kitchen and a tv in the bedroom of the suite. I think this is a great value located a block from the beach and 2 blocks from the bay. Maybe the 1972 efficiency was actually in style in 1972, or as late as 1974, but clearly, the room was a hovel in Seaside Park, NJ, 2008. Where has the Windjammer gone? True facts: 2nd floor bar/ lounge is a great idea, but it's a horrific visual experience; the pool has an eight-foot section, but I'd need to disinfect upon exiting it; the lobby is... wow, impetus for checking in at under two minutes if possible; the only game in town for Seaside Park for a weekend. Truth is, you have either weeklies or your choice of crummy motels. Forget a decent hotel with a pool, it's just not possible here. If you have to stay at a motel in this area, just completely block this destination from your mind. -C read more

Bath towels are about the size of hand towels, loud AC units and badly outdated furniture and efficiencies and paneled walls that look something out of the Brady Bunch. First of all, as a family of 8 we went to the restaurant to have breakfast, and there was a waitress that was extremely snotty. I asked if we can sit or have to wait? "Go wherever you want" was her reply. I found a large table that could accommodate 8 and said ok we will go sit there "that table is broken" was her reply. I then asked where can we sit? Here reply: nowhere there's no room! What? Are you serious? We went and found out there was an outside sitting area so we went and put 2 tables together and sat. Sat for 20 minutes (by the way we had to get our own menus) no one came outside. Another couple was sitting and the husband came out and told the wife that they have to order as a take out. Thanks to him we knew we had to do the same! We took the tables order to go order inside. Said waitress said "i can't take your order right now they just sat down a table and i have to take care of them". I said well we have been waiting for over 20 minutes. Her response "not my problem, there's only 2 of us working!" Went downstairs and left but the manager was informed and his reply was "well I'll give you 25% discount but there is no service outside" I'm sorry we didn't know as no one told us. We were leaving and his response was well you loose out! Actually you loose out was our response! We had a table of 8 and you lost out in a lot of money! Great way to spend a sporadic family getaway. It was like they already knew us. Even the other guests made it nice. Fantastic breakfast- get the Benedict!!! Bar specials were really great deals. We have been coming here to stay since 2005. It is our go to. They are one of the few places open all year round which makes it a great place to stay for fishing any time of the year. Rooms are clean and well equipped with cleaning service offered daily along with a smile. It is close to the beach, the boardwalk, and many good restaurants. There is a nice sized heated pool that makes for a relaxing afternoon. There is ample parking close to the rooms that makes it easy to unpack your belongings. They also do a happy hour at the bar on site where they serve good drinks at a fair price and complimentary food items such as pizza, small sandwiches, soup, mac and cheese, and many other items depending on the day. The family that runs it are wonderful people who we consider friends after so many years. They are very helpful and accommodating. It has become our home away from home. You can't pick a better place to stay in the area. You won't be disappointed. read more

Cons: upon check-in they ask if you want an ashtray so i wasn't surprised the room smelled of smoke. we happened to have our own sheets / towels -- i was happy about that. what we didn't have was soap or shampoo; FYI they will give you soap at the front desk but we had to go buy shampoo. the a/c barely worked & i'm sure the bed has seen a LOT of miles. Stayed for a long weekend with friends. Not only were the staff so friendly but also incredibly accommodating. The pool was always clean, rooms were cleaned while we ate breakfast and the staff even gave us extra pillows upon request. Happy Hour was awesome! Theres a sun deck with an area to dine and drink in the shade and also an area to sit and catch some sun while listening to music on the jukebox. I would absolutely recommend as it is a short walk to the beach and an easy drive or uber to the boardwalk in seaside heights. Will definitely be staying again soon!! read more

We went here once and never will come back. The AC was absolutely horrible and ran very low. The place was supposed to have been known for a classic happy hour. When we walked into the dark and dingy bar it looked like a scene from where the dead come back to roost. We aren't that young but this was a real old sea hag looking bunch and we had a drink and ran out to another place- almost ashamed to be there it was so creepy. The place itself nothing special but when you want a lounge so you can stay there more often and that lounge actually makes you run by- that's real bad. It was a bad time all around for the family that trip. There were pot smokers everywhere you turned a corner and nobody cared in fact we seemed to be THE PROBLEM from the looks we would get. Stayed here with the kids for a family reunion and we had a great time! Staff was super nice, and our room was recently redone so it was clean and comfortable. We had a nice breakfast at the restaurant then a yummy lunch at the palm tree patio while the kids hit the pool.( Pool was large, clean and heated with nice sun deck.)We went to Happy hour at the bar and the free food was a nice bonus. We liked this motel because of the friendly service. We got to use the pool after we checked out. Plus, they gave us some towels to use. The manager asked some young guests to quiet down after 10 PM and we were happy about that. The room was OK, it was clean but a bit shabby. it's a beach motel, only one block from the beach. I never stay at places like this but decided I needed a quick shore getaway. I wasn't totally appalled like I expected to be. The people that run this place are really nice. Not the cleanest place, but I have seen worse. I was annoyed that they advertised a restaurant and it was never open and I was there for a weekend. Bring your own towels for showering, the towels they give you are a step up from washcloths. Their elevator is from the stone age and after going in it once, I took the stairs the rest of the time. In Seaside, almost ALL of these places are alike, if you are going to Seaside, you shouldn't be hoping for a Ritz Carlton. All the motels there are the same so not sure why people are surprised with these places not being the cleanest, etc. I would actually go back there before I'd go to any of the other places I have stayed at in that area. read more

I was just passing thru and crashing for the night, so I had low expectations to start with . The front desk person was always very nice and accommodating to me, I will say that was the only positive here. After crashing and finding sand in my bed, I pulled the sheets back to remove them, when I found a dirty sock in my bed! Yuck, I guess they don't change sheets if they don't have to. What a fantastic time. I stayed for four days. My room was exceptionally clean. We enjoyed time at the beach , which was just one block away. They had a great breakfast on premise and happy hour during the afternoon. The children had a ball, too. The pool was heated and there was new furniture with a separate area to eat and drink with a bar. The staff was great. I would recommend it to anyone. read more
