I recently visited Portland with some friends. I spent the requisite half-a-day in Powell's my first full day in the city but I was a bit disappointed in their theology section. As I planned out my Portland trip I had determined to go to Windows Bookseller and my visit to this bookstore exceeded my expectations. As I understand it, this cozy location is smaller than the Eugene location, but it still has an amazing array of books available, prompting many Solomonic decisions about which books to buy and which ones to leave behind. A few minutes after I arrived and started browsing, I heard Adam recommending Walker Percy to another customer. I knew then that this was a place with good taste in theology books (browsing the literature shelf I noticed a lot of the usual suspects among the "Books & Culture" crowd, including Wendell Berry, Marilynne Robinson, and my favourite, Alice McDermott). There are a lot of theology, biblical studies, philosophy, and history books available at very good prices. Names that leapt out from the shelves included Marva Dawn, Stanley Hauerwas, and Walter Brueggemann. Many of the hardcovers I purchased had laminated covers which I always appreciate. The staff were very friendly and helpful and I left with a box full of books. The next time I visit Portland I am definitely going to prioritize visiting Windows Booksellers again. read more

What a neat experience to travel, visit bookstores, and all along meet others who do enjoy reading and book collecting. This used bookstore has a mass selection of used books, excellent pricing, and they are a great resource for local used book sellers as well as vintage book collections. A really great bookshop. Yes, if theology is your thing, this is the bookshop for you, but they also have a great selection of other stuff - history, philosophy, literature. The prices are VERY fair and books are priced to move. Adam is a supremely nice chap and you would not regret visiting. Nobody reads anymore. Or I guess they do but it's a couple of disjointed sentences every hour on one's phone screen. Oh you're different; you read huh? Not just saying that to be cute then babe? Well if you claim to be a letter lover than this spot is for you. And a big bonus is it's right down the street (by me, not you, boo hoo). The added bonus of no tourists looking for genre lit like you'll find at your powell's. This bookseller specializes in theology, philosophy and other related subjects, having a little bit of everything (medieval history section being my favorite). The only reason I cannot give this place and my boy Adam five stars is I tried to pop in around two o'clock on a friday and the door was locked! Knocked a couple of times, walked down to the 7/11 and repeated 5 minutes later to no avail. A sad day indeed, but this is definitely THE neighborhood spot and I have been timid in regards as to writing this review because I honestly don't wanna see any of you there alright. Windows is a phenomenal bookstore, with an amazing staff. Hilda, Mike, and Adam are helpful and welcoming. This is one of the rare bookstores in which you can ask for recommendations and guidance in your reading. Adam is extremely knowledgeable, and consistently goes the extra mile to help customers find what they're looking for. Their prices are very competitive, and they carry a great selection of titles in a variety of genres/subjects. They are, by far, the best store in the area for theological and biblical books in terms of their selection, quality, and expertise in the field. They buy and sell used books, and I have always found Adam to be very reasonable and flexible in buying books. Be sure to check out their mass-market room, where every title is a dollar. Hilda is a guru when it comes to finding titles that aren't in stock at very good prices. If you are a lover of books, this is the place for you. read more

Great little bookstore! Friendly, reasonable prices, tons of books to browse... I could spend an entire day in this place.

I found this place by a complete fluke. I was visiting a friend in Portland for the first time and, tired of the over-priced but comprehensive Powell's, simply googled "Portland bookstore" and voila. I walked in hoping this would be one of those old-school bookstores and sure enough my hunch was right. Adam is personable and kind, makes great recommendations, and has a clearly in-depth knowledge of theology and literature in general. Not to mention the prices are reasonable (generally around $5). There is a pretty hefty philosophical section in which you can get Copleston's entire history of philosophy for something like $2.50 per book. The atmosphere is that of a classic used bookstore before the likes of Half-Priced Books more or less monopolized the niche. It feels like you are practically tripping into bookshelves brimming with treasures, I even found some rare stuff I couldn't find much mention of online. The owner even made me a dust jacket for my two-volume Summa Theologica (which was only $10) and shipped my massive haul of books to my address in Illinois (you still pay the cost of shipping, of course).
