New Renaissance is aptly named. It's a renaissance type of bookstore with a curated selection of books, gifts, jewelry, tea and all things new age. The staff have different specialties. If you want to know more about something, they can put you in touch with a staff member who is in the know. Their service is invaluable. I bought a Chakra pendant for my sister last week which is made of real stones. The card that came with it lists each stone and their significance. This adds to the appreciation and value of the gift. I would venture to say that all the stones here are real. In the glass jewelry cases they have way more valuable jewelry and stones. I come to events here. Tonight I'm going to attend an event by Mark Mezadourian. New Renaissance also has weekly events including Gong sessions and Tarot Card readings. I've been going to New Renaissance for years, but I have to say it's deteriorated enormously from what it used to be. Shallow inventory in many areas (Tibetan Buddhism), lots of single-copy face outs--something's wrong. Service remains excellent, and there's a rich array of non-book items, but books? Meh. It's still worth a visit if you want crystals or singing bowls or cool clothes or to just check out an alternative kind of place. I wish you well. read more

This store has changed a great deal from the old days. This store was once run mostly by people who were involved with the Ananda Church of Self-Realization. And though said managers and employees never tried to convert you to their religion, they at least were very supportive of anyone on a spiritual path. Staff and clientele of this store was much more diverse - - in terms of economics, race, and age -- back in those days. Today, this store seems more like the female version of the "Good Ole Boys Club." Which is to say, like much of Portland, it has been gentrified. If you aren't an affluent, white woman between the ages of about 30 and 60, you kind of aren't wanted here. Note the earlier reviews from women of color who mentioned being followed as they shopped...... And I, as a male, have had it made pretty clear that they don't want my kind in their midst either. In fact, even though my patronage of this store began in 1993 (before some current staff were even born!), I have also had the bizarre experience of being followed as I shopped. Creepy beyond belief! This store has a calm and relaxing vibe , which is a stark contrast from the hustle and bustle of 23rd . You are greeted with a whiff of great incense and essential oils when you enter ,coupled with the spiritual music playing , it instantly makes you feel welcome. I am not so much into spiritual books but this store really fascinates me with the rest of the stuff they sell - Incenses , essential oils , candles , crystals , water fountains , wind chimes ,jewelry ,artifacts ,soaps , teas etc. .It might feel a little cramped in there but I love the fact that there is so much variety .The employees are polite and helpful. The prices are on the higher side but there is something for everyone here . This is a darling little shop with a great selection of books regarding spirituality and astrology. They have tons of charming knick knacks, gifts, and crystals. I went close to closing time so I didn't get to fully explore everything they have to offer because I ran out of time but I will definitely go back. This is a pretty thorough New Age/Spiritual bookstore. I mean between this place and Powell's City of Books, you're bound to find just about whatever it is your spiritual self is looking for, whether that is on Buddhist meditation techniques, Native American spirituality, yoga, shamanism, crystals, incense, candles, Tarot, Law of Attraction, channeled works, Wicca and paganism, etc. The place takes up an entire old Victorian house, the selection is huge and it's going to take you some time to go over everything to see what speaks to you and what doesn't. Mind you this isn't Watkins Books in London, which covers spiritual teachers from all over the world like Mikhael Aivanhov, Peter Deunov, Martinus of Denmark, Daskalos from Cyprus or Torkom Saraydarian. Not surprising really since Americans (I find) have a tendency to be very parochial about these things and lack a global scope and understanding and seem to think "spirituality" is just an American of Anglo-Saxon phenomena. A friend brought me here after I told her I was looking for a place that offered a nice variety of crystals, similar to Psychic Eye in L.A. She had mentioned this place a few times and we finally made it. I love the area on 23rd and we made our way up to the super cute Victorian style store. I personally felt very cramped since this is a house converted into a shop. Every time I walked or turned I felt l would bump into something/someone. You would think for a new age/spiritual shop the employees would have a more pleasant energy about them, but honestly they didn't. I agree with some other reviews noticing the same thing. The best thing about this store is they do have an abundant variety of most anything! You need some tarot cards? They have tons to choose from, Crystals? They have bowls overflowing with them along with cute little descriptions. And the books... they have a generous amount in this niche. I absolutely adore this book shop! Not only do they have books on practically any metaphysical topic but they also offer candles, essential oils, crystals and workshops. I can't wait to join them for their free meditation workshops. Dorothy was extremely helpful and friendly. When I told her I was new to the neighborhood she went out of her way to give me a map of the neighborhood and even made suggestions on books/dvds for my next visit based on my purchase. Don't get me wrong the place is lovely to look at with all of its crystals and mystical items. Horribly overpriced though. I was unnerved by some items being sold as it was definitely cultural appropriation. Some things stay within certain cultures for a reason and people have no business calling on ancestors that are not their own. This can lead to trouble spiritually. I get the idea of what they are trying to accomplish but I fear it is terribly misguided. read more

Gird your chakras people. This is as hippie dippie as it gets... and I LOVE it. Growing up with conservative Texas parents, I wasn't oh-ming and ah-ing about. Deep breathing and meditation and world religions and tarot reading and lavender oil weren't a thing. And for the most part in my life now, they're not. But I can appreciate the range of options in this store. Whether you're dipping a toe in the proverbial pool of alternative spirituality or you're well versed, this bookshop has it all. Frankly, calling it a bookstore is probably a misnomer. They have books but they also boast adorable jewelry, clothes, crystals, oils, lotions, gifts, cards, DVDs, a reader, healing stones, a discount literature section and this ashiatsu massage pole that can help you work those knots out solo. You can learn about the power of now or the power of animals, you can find your spirit stone or slather on every essential oil known to man, you can giggle in the aisles or find your next soul's next great adventure. Okay, that's a tall tale, but if I did believe in reincarnation I would call dibs on coming back as a fluffy, persian calico mix! I've always been a little curious about this new-age woo woo shit, so walking into New Renaissance was magical for me and felt a bit like a Harry Potter journey. New Renaissance creates a safe place to test out your curiosity on the metaphysical. The store offers a soothing respite from the busy sidewalk on 23rd street, with relaxing music and the subtle smell of incense in the air. It is a very interesting shop, however I believe that there was a fraud committed last time I was there. On April 18/2019 I was at the store with my husband looking for a Himalayan salt lamp. A young man was helping us with that. We chose one lamp. When we were paying for the items it was one lamp for $35 and one rose perfume for $9.95. My husband was paying so I didn't pay attention to the total bill. So we left. I took the receipt and didn't even look at it! Today is May 15/2019, I was going through all of the receipts and looked at the receipt from New Renaissance. I was surprised that the total was $79.95. How was it possible that the lamp was so pricy? I looked closer and saw that we were charged for 2 GAIA lamps. It is very very strange that someone would make such a mistake.....that is why I think it was not, because we were purchasing only two items -one lamp and one perfume. I love New Renaissance Bookshop! It just has everything going for it that a spiritual/New Age shop should - it's perfect!! :-D Lots of crystals to choose from... Some small stones (on the spinny rack) are only $1 each. Brief descriptions of most stones are marked above them. Also, pretty decent selection of crystal/stone (& just really pretty) jewelry. Wonderful book selections on Spiritual topics & self-help. Also CDs & DVDs. Helpful staff. One of the girls working there aided me in picking out an awesome stone how-to guidebook. She shared some of what she knew with me. (There was a guy working there too - he didn't know a thing about stones...) Lots of tapestries, apparel, purses/bags, lovely greeting card selection (I seriously love their cards!), candles, and much more. They are also super kid-friendly. They let my two-year-old pick out & keep a stone of her very own! :) There is also a kids section here, that includes even more books, both for parents & kids, along with play fairy wings, stuffed animals, and even a small play/toy area. A new themed sale every month. (This month is 20% off of all jewelry, for example, with no exceptions, either!) Private bathroom which is always a plus, as I generally go in there with a giant coffee or tea and need to empty my bladder before leaving! This place is like home to me. So wonderful. Oh, man. I can't even handle the awesomeness that is New Renaissance. Every new age book I've ever read, or wanted to read, is there. Every new age item I've wanted to dabble in (crystals, smudging equipment, offering bowls, malas, etc.) is there. And the classes! I've recently taken two $20 classes that were truly life changing. Not bad for the price of one meal at a restaurant! Finally, the staff and customers are just so sweet and kind. Came here during my visit to Portland. The store was also recommended by a friend. We went in a Saturday and it was super busy. To the point it felt overwhelming and claustrophobic especially with some snooty customers who pretend to be spiritual but were very judgee. This place is so big and converting the Victorian house into multiple rooms with books, gems, incense and lots of spiritual stuff was pretty cool. They also offer intuitive or spiritual services. I got a reading from sarina Marie I think that's her name. She was awesome and 30 minutes wasn't enough wish I had booked her for an hour. I bought $150 worth of gifts for my friends and family back home. Including an awesome embroidered wallet and a moonstone ring. Their collection of books, jewelry is pretty huge and great. I can see why so many people go here especially from out of town. The majority of the staff was friendly with the exception of Jennifer. Her vibe doesn't belong there. Otherwise, highly recommend this place. Parking is available at the back of the store but limited. I also wouldn't recommend coming here on a weekend. Amazing shop! It was like paradise for someone who's just getting into all things spiritual and beautiful. The book selection alone was stunning, and their selection of tarot cards was fantastically overwhelming. The staff came by a few times to ask if I needed help, which I greatly appreciated because there's just so many different products. The store is set up with clear signage about which way to go and how far to be from the next customer. The only sad point I have is that I got this amazing as heck ring for $24 and it turned my finger green :/ I don't know if it was wishful thinking, but I'd hoped at that price it wouldn't have done that. There are some people who don't know that I need the things that are sold at this location. Someone was being very hostile to me at New Renaissance Bookshop after my Darling Husband drove me here. He was parking and couldn't enter at the same time that I did. While I was walking around looking for the Frankincense and Myrrh... I was stopped. A hostile stranger started yelling at me. It only took a couple of seconds before a Customer Service person asked me if I was being harassed. I replied that I was... but the hostile stranger who was yelling said... something else to the Customer Service person standing next to me. I thought that the hostile stranger would hit me... so I took a step back. Just then... my Darling Husband walked through the front door. I thought he was going home. I told him.... I was almost hit by that hostile stranger. I was told by the Customer Service person that if I wanted to press charges she (the Customer Service person) would be my witness. I told the CS person... I don't know who that hostile stranger was. I was told that hostile stranger hadn't ever acted or behaved that way before in the New Renaissance Bookshop. I then told the CS person that... I will press charges... if I'm harassed when my Husband and I leave to go to my car. I was told.... the hostile stranger's name. I guess she is a "Local Yocal." Maybe, you've seen this hostile stranger before in a different neighborhood. My Husband said... she probably was (the hostile stranger) off her meds (medicine). There was a random younger Caucasian dude talking to the hostile stranger on the sidewalk when we left. The random younger Causaian dude was asking the hostile stranger to move her car because it was blocking his truck in. I did find the items that I was looking for and I plan to go back to New Renaissance Bookshop for those items and more... because... I like to support small businesses. I was in with my sister this past Saturday (10/28/23) and was followed the WHOLE entire time. The weather was cold out, like 30° (give or take) so I had a big puffy coat on and was profiled and followed the ENTIRE time by this older white woman with glasses and a limp and an older, short, white, bald man with glasses and a blue cost. I could hear them talking about me saying things like "which one is it?" and "where is she now?" And "I got eyes on her." They literally followed me everywhere in the shop, I mean EVERYWHERE! This was a horrible, uncomfortable and unnecessary experience. The staff in this establishment NEED to take some Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) courses ASAP before a lawsuit gets filed for discrimination. This is a serious matter and is absolutely not the way to run a business. This is really unfortunate because the establishment is absolutely adorable, and I would have loved to had the opportunity to be treated equally and actually shop without being followed and looked at as a thief. I bought a wonderful book for my partner, but not sure if I will ever go back due to the awful experience that I had being profiled, discriminated, and followed. read more
