Kind of went from there and then grew out of control. Phonographs, audiophile, computers, and two way. Though no Scanners... darn shame. Walk in, sign the book, pay a modest fee, and walk through a timeline of telegraph, telephones, movie making, victrolas, radio, television, stereo equipment, and computers. You might hear them light up a jukebox box. You can watch cartoons they broadcast on their Transmitter to TV sets within the museum. A wonderful, operational, ham radio club too. W1VCM. You can operate the boat anchors to modern rigs. Lots of geek terms in that sentence- IYKYK. A really wonderful take. It is the owner's personal collection. The Atwater-Kent breadboards were my personal favorite. They host Examinations to be come a licensed amateur radio operator, Ham Flea Markets, educational services, elderly education, and local events on-site. It is a big building. Sensory overload. You will need to go a couple two three times. No negatives. Make a cash donation. Leave a radio - if they don't display it, they can sell it to keep operations going. The Science Center has a lot of interactive exhibits. There is plenty to read, if you want to, but…read morehonestly, the children I saw were jumping in and participating in the many hands-on exhibits. Some of the favorites were the air cannons where they tested their skills keeping a ball aloft while moving it toward a 'hoop' to drop the ball through. The interactive downhill ski machine was also visited often. The day we visited, a group of high school students were there with a display on aerodynamics. They had visual displays of air moving objects and then the children were allowed to build their own paper airplane, put it into a wind tunnel and see how well their design flew. They very much enjoyed that. There is a huge megalodon static display with a wide open mouth to show just how much one could eat in a bite. All the kids wanted to crawl inside, which of course is not allowed, but it was certainly large enough to swallow all of them whole! The shark exhibit had lots of information and a video game they could use to make a shark eat a squid. They enjoyed that as well. The admission is quite expensive, which I understand as everything is quite expensive these days and there are plenty of staff on hand in each exhibit to answer questions. Then there's maintenance, electricity, etc. At one time the Science Center offered passes through the libraries for half off admission which would certainly be helpful to families straining to live within a budget. Camp groups were in house during our visit so perhaps they choose to focus their giving back to the community in that way instead of offering the library passes. A sandwich shop and an ice cream shop are on the first floor along with the gift shop. The gift shop has a variety of items from games to jewelry at a variety of price points. Some exhibit spaces have restrooms and water fountains. Ask a staff member for directions. Very long, steep staircases lead between exhibits and you have to exit the exhibit on the correct side to access these stair cases. An elevator bank runs from the lobby to each floor as well. They do have a parking garage, which was full when we visited. The Convention Center parking garage is just across the street and a short walk away.

My favorite was the butterfly encounter; there is a room just for butterflies and they do land on you. There is a parking garage available. There are 4 levels open to the public. My family and I enjoyed the exhibits. There were plenty to keep us all busy. My children enjoyed the play kitchen, dinosaurs, and butterflies. Blue Chip Creamery is also located there. I highly recommend it and can't wait to go back soon.

I was miserable most of my time there. BUT. This was a great museum. I was miserable because the…read moreonly time I could go was on a Saturday, a free Saturday no less, on a day they had a festival, arts and crafts, and a Christmas tree event. So the crowds were INSANE. Like NYC level insane. That being said, I have lots of great things to say about this place, which underwent a huge renovation and modernization several years ago that was so good that the New York Times wrote an article saying it was "a masterpiece of renovation." The great hall is beautiful and though I don't care much for old school colonizer art, I was bummed it was teeming with Christmas trees and families, hindering my ability to take an artful photo to capture that masterpiece. The museum does a great job of mixing colors, styles, appreciating the classical, while also mixing in fun and modern elements. They have European art. Impressionist art. All that gold religious stuff. Modern art that's just some blocks and colors and makes you wonder, "is this really art?" They have a great surrealist section and a huge Dali painting, which is actually the marketing they used to get me here. They have some sculpture, some Greek sculpture and some contemporary art. I enjoyed the art by Black artists and art focusing on Black struggles in the Amistad Center, located on the third floor, though I wish this section was bigger. They had an Islamic art section, Chinese art, American art (most of what I saw was from the 20s through the 90s). I loved how each space was painted a rich, moody color. And the common spaces were full of patterns, stained glass, and multi-colored walls winding up the staircase. The staff were nice and helpful. I paid 20-something bucks for admission, but since I bought a ticket for a free Saturday, the staff was cool enough to contact me and ask me if I wanted a full refund. I told them to take the fee as a donation. I've seen almost all the museums in New York City, which is my favorite place in the world. But this one can hold its own. But if I ever visit again (which I doubt, cus who needs to see Hartford twice?)--I will avoid weekends and free days and definitely the Christmas tree festival!

Surprisingly great little art museum / historical home. There's a great art range, and the tour guide was very informative to the Pope family and the daughter Theodate who did a lot of the architectural designing. The house has a lot of great things to look at (between the art and furniture in all the rooms) and at the visitor's center there is a small art exhibit. No photos in the house allowed though. There are trails on the property and a sunken garden. On a nice weather day, it's great for walking around the property. It was crowded when I went on a Saturday, and tours are on the hour, so don't show up at the last minute. Overall, a great site to visit!

We had the most amazing visit to the CT Trolley Museum. We came with a group, including children,…read moreand easily spent two and a half hours here. We could definitely have stayed longer, but alas, they were closing. The museum offers trolley rides with paid admission. You will be given trolley tickets, and the motorman will 'punch' the ticket for each ride. Trolleys leave on the hour and they have two different trolleys they alternate using. One has sides and windows (like a bus), the other is open on the sides (more like a San Fran. street car). Each ride lasts about thirty minutes, there and back again and we rode both trolleys so an hour of our visit was on the trolleys. A scavenger hunt is available for the kids and they loved it! Clip boards with the list of questions and pencils are located in the museum for the child to use during their hunt. Areas where you will find the answer to a questions have a big star on them and the question number. The kids were so excited to bring their answer sheets to the employee in the gift shop. She pulled out her answer key and 'graded' each paper making sure everyone had all the answers correct! Once a paper was graded, the child got to choose a trolley coin and were told those coins are rare! Only scavenger hunt participants get a coin, you can't buy them, so guard it well! Also for children is a Lego area, a dress up area, a kid sized wooden trolley they can play in, hand-held wooden trollies to play with, arts and crafts and other kid activities. There is even a reading nook off to one side in a sunny corner. The static display trolleys are very interesting. I especially enjoyed the snow sweeper trolley and the three wheeled, one person, conveyance. It's really too bad trolleys went 'out of fashion'. They covered so much ground and were a convenient way to get where you were going before the advent of the automobile. Your museum trolley ride includes information about historic local service that was quite interesting too. If you have time, there is a fire truck and apparatus museum in another building behind the trolley museum. A tour guide there will answer any questions and they have a lot of fire truck knowledge. Very interesting! We did leave a donation in the boxes in both buildings and we made some purchases in the gift shop to help support the mission. Most of the staff are volunteers, so if they do a good job and improve the quality of your visit, feel free to tip them. Not needed, but I'm sure it's appreciated. The kids want to return for their autumn pumpkin patch event. I want to return for their Christmas light event! Bring a warm blanket and cozy up with the kids! Sound like good winter fun to me. Parking on site with handicap spots near the entrance. Paved pathway to the building. You will have to hop up onto the trolley to ride. Restrooms were clean. Water fountain and bottle filling station are inside along with two vending machines for snacks. This is an excellent stop for all ages.

The staff was very friendly and very easy to deal with. We were a little worried about going over the limit for guests, but everyone was able to get a Trolley ride! They even let all the children pull the whistle, which they absolutely loved! This children all received party favors of one free future Trolley ride. My advice is to get a membership for an even more amazing deal! The loft area has a shorter ceiling not easily accessible for parents (there's a bed up there and I felt inappropriate for kids to be unsupervised) The girl who took our payment was super nice!
