What an excellent brewery in the heart of Amsterdam! It's rather close to Central Station and offers up some incredible beers. They offer a beer flight for 10€. It comes with four samples, plus a taster size water and a baby bowl of peanuts. What a nice touch! I hate peanut butter in beer (like it's the worst thing ever created, ew), but peanuts WITH beer is a great idea. I had the bitterblond, scotch, barleywine, and tripel. They were all top quality. I gave the scotch away though. Too peaty for me. All in all a very cool place to hang out. If I had longer time in the city, I would've returned for sure. read more

I'm not sure how many breweries there are in the Netherlands but this is really the only one that I know I'll set the moments. And no one should count the Heineken Brauerei as one. That's just a tourist trap. I only really found out about this place because there was a Groupon so I went there with the friends to try it out. I really do feel that I got screwed on the Groupon though. And only consisted of three beer tasting and there was snow chore of the brewery which said we would get. It also came with a few snacks, but that consisted of two bitter ball and two pieces of cheese and two pieces of for a Americano. That food was really nothing to speak highly of. My friend did get a veggie burger, but he said that Patty was sort of dry but the flavor was alright. As for the beer. Pretty much everything we tried was pretty good. I was even surprised to see you Dutch IPA which you don't see here very often. That was probably my favorites because it was a little bitter but also smooth going down. They also had a blonde triple which was quite nice. Most of the beers have names of famous singers or someone who started the brewery. This is sort of fun and nice way to name your beers. There's quite a lot of seating upstairs and downstairs, as well as a nice cozy area of that sort of looks over the bar. One of the highlights for me, which is sort of silly, was the beer tap sink in the toliet. Such a fun idea and of course especially for a brewery. The place is sort of tucked away in a little alley which you would not normally see or go to unless you knew it was there. Which means for the most part there isn't a lot of tourists packing place up. Definitely worth a visit! read more

Came here around 2pm on a Saturday with 2 friends. A friend had recommended the place. We seated ourselves. Still getting used to service here -- we had to wave down our servers multiple times to order. I ordered the chicken satay (served with fries, salad, satay and atjar), bitter alley to share, and a Dutch beer flight to finish off the meal. Portions are generous and we left happy and full. When we left at 5pm, the place was bustling. Guess it's a good thing we had a late lunch! ;-) Note I don't think they take credit cards. read more

Really a cool place to go and try beer. All beer comes from their own brewery and the brews are named after either Dutch singers or bands. They seem to always have something new when I go but they old favorites are also always available. The place is pretty big. It is divided into a bunch of different sections, the bar, a restauranty section, a section that reminds you of a living room, and one other one but I can't remember off the top of my head. One other cool thing to note it that instead of using faucets in the bathroom sinks, they use real beer taps, a cool touch I think. read more

We went on a bike tour earlier in the day and had a blast with our tour guide..added him on Facebook, the whole 9 and met him at this little spot in the Red Light District. I stopped here with colleagues on the recommendations of some locals and am definitely glad I did, otherwise I would not have found this hip joint. At first, I didn't realize this was actual brewery that brewed it's one beers - definitely a nice surprise! As you walk in, you'll notice this place has three floors, winding down tight aisles, which make for a cozy and authentic experience. I tried a couple of their beers and each were delicious - especially their Double IPA and Weizen, if you want a lighter choice. Equally delicious was their food - what I would imagine Dutch Pub food to be. We had a few different types: bitterballs (Dutch Specialty of fried meat balls), fried cheese, a fried sausage like item, and beer sausage. It would be hard to pick a favorite but damn, those fried cheese squares so good that I wanted to order two plates for dinner. De Prael is a vibrant and authentic seeming brewery that has delicious beers, fun atmosphere, and damn good bar food - so if you're looking for a bite out and a beer, you can't go wrong here. read more

This brewery seemed like a place where all the locals hang out. Two ladies that live in the Jordaan were sitting next to us at the bar and the other couple next to them were from Sweden. They all shared their appetizers with us and were lively drinking company. The brewery has a ton of character and it seemed like there were various rooms with tables in them. We liked the Johnny Alt and the Willeke the best. They have a great cheese plate and the bitterballen are top notch! read more

A nice local brewery with a good selection of beers. We came in the mid-afternoon and found it was pretty crowded. You can either order a beer at the bar and find a seat or sit down and then order from the table. It seems like most people order the beer samplers, which is what we should've done initially. We tried four different beers including the pale ale, pumpkin ale, weizen and barley wine. My favorite was probably the pale ale. Their snack sampler was also delicious and went well with the drinks. The service was just average, but that's probably because it was so busy when we went. read more

Here with a group of six work colleagues, so arriving around 8 found the place packed and rather difficult to get a table. Fortunately, they found us some room in the downstairs area. Though not as charming as the upstairs, it was still great. Most popular offering beer is the 'Johnny'. It's the first choice on the menu and a good option. There are plenty of other offerings on the menu with detailed descriptions, so there is definitely something here for anyone. Appetizers were served up. The sausage platter and meatballs disappeared fast. Hamburger, fish & chips, stews, etc are served, but didn't have any this visit. In the Wallen, the watering Holes rank across a broad spectrum. The Prael ranks right up as one of the best places for comfortable, casual fun, but classy and clean as well. Oh...and the local brew beer is topnotch without question. read more

I was here for lunch last week and it's a really pleasant bar. I would say and this stands for most of Amsterdam if you want a beer in a reasonable amount of time get it at the bar. They are very relaxed if you go for table service so you will be waiting 15-20 minutes to get your drink. I was here twice during my trip to Amsterdam the first for food so I was relaxed about being served. The second time just for a drink and we got so frustrated with waiting for the table service drinks to arrive, we ended up just leaving. Hence the two stars. Otherwise they would be a 3. There beer selection covers all bases and they use quite small kegs so what's on offer changes regularly. If your used to heavily flavoured American craft you amy be a little disappointed as their flavour profiles here are much more balanced, they are of great quality though and it's nice to have choice which isn't lager or something aggressively hopped. Their brewery bottle shop around the corner is well worth a look and the prices on their bottle beer seems very reasonable. I ordered the raw smoked beef sausage and it was very nice, it was smoked enough that it didn't have an raw taste to me but was very good to have with a cool beer on a warm day. The salad was a let down though as it was wilted and a little sorry, quite probably made in a large batch in the morning or possibly the day before, suffice it to say it wasn't the freshest and felt more like a necessary accompaniment to the meat and bread rather than a valued part of the dish. read more

Located in central Amsterdam, this place is a must stop for beer lovers. With around 10 different beers on tap, there are plenty of different types to choose from. The prices are very reasonable and the staff is very friendly. There is plenty of seating on the inside with limited seating outside. This is a very lively place and usually very busy. They offer beer flights as well which is a great deal. The IPA was very tasty and the Whizen was also very good. To add to the excellence of this brewery, they have a brick and motor store that you can purchase those beers to go as well so you can take them home. read more

Hidden on a sidestreet, this place is not easy to search out, but the effort of strolling around the Red Light District is rewarded by deliciously crafted brews. Unique offerings including a Heffebok flavored with almonds (Nellis) along with a barley wine (Mary) are excellent and unique finds in Amsterdam. All the beers are named after Netherland musical stars from the 50s and 60s, adding a unique spin to the naming process. Their stand-by Pils (Johnny) has a nice hoppy bite that elevates is above most Pils. The staff is a bit spacy, but you don't come here for service. It's always filled with locals in the evening. We went around lunch time and it was a ghost town, but returned on a Thursday evening for live music and it was packed. Love the beer selection brewed on the premise - you can see them working around the barrels in the back if you come during the day. Tours are offered as well, but we just enjoyed the beers in house. Highly recommended for beer fans in Amsterdam. read more

I arranged a tour of Brouwerij de Prael for a recent Sunday at 3 p.m. and, to my surprise, found I was the only person who had signed up! Which was great for me, as I got a personalized one-hour tour of the brewery. Afterwards, I sat in the bar area and had their flight to taste their various beers. Everything was great. One slight hiccup: they only accept cash, and I didn't have enough to pay for my flight (18 Euros). But the bartender handled it kindly, and directed me to a nearby ATM. By the way: the entrance for brewery (and shop) is actually just around the corner from the bar. read more

Great brewed in AMS biers. We had a flight for 10€ even though a single large bier is 2.5-3.5€ so save some money and just buy one of each large one! Nice atmosphere but the waitresses are overworked and you have to track them down. Very nice when you actually get their attention. We didn't eat a meal but had the croquettes which were fried Dutch balls. For an American they were quite strange but good! read more

This place was stunning. I went here in search of a good beer while away my hometown which has many good breweries. Prael didn't disappoint! They have a great selection of brews, and the bar staff are happy to discuss details and let you taste samples before you order. The atmosphere of this place is great, mostly being stuffed to the brim with locals. Every corner table, sofa chair, or standing area is packed with smiling people appreciating a nice beer. Music is playing but not too loud. Lighting is on the mellow atmospheric end of the spectrum. I will definitely go here again when I visit Amsterdam. read more

I'm giving 5 stars based on our experience, but I will say we didn't eat here. As far as the beer they make here, it was all great. More hops than a lot of local beers. Might have got that from a recent guest brewmaster from Saugatuck brewery from west Michigan. The space is fairly large so there's always somewhere to hang out. The staff is friendly and makes good recommendations for the beer based on other beer you like. We stumbled upon this place in our travels and decided to give it a go since we had some time to kill. The interior was quiet and welcoming...there was virtually no one inside. The man working behind the bar wasn't especially friendly or accommodating. I ordered a tripel for the wife and I believe I got a pale ale. Neither were particularly tasty. Nina struggled so much with hers that I ended up drinking it. At least the prices were decent. I can't say I'd venture back this way since there is so much amazing beer to be had in the Netherlands. read more
