Lovely staff and atmosphere. The service was great and we were welcomed immediately on arrival. The main restaurant is beautifully decorated with a very beachy aesthetic and the music really added to the ambiance. They also have an extra covered patio area which appeared to be dog friendly, as well as lots of outdoor seating with lovely views of the beach. We shared the fruits de mar platter and it was more than enough for two people. You could honestly share it between three and order a side if you need more! The crab was absolutely delicious, honestly nothing was bad. The fries were some of the nicest we've had down here too. They serve Salcombe Dairy ice cream as well and the coffee and banana flavours were both really nice and not synthetic or overpowering. Great little place just outside of Salcombe and across from a beautiful little beach. I had a beer, a prawn sandwich (FYI, in England a prawn is actually a popcorn shrimp), and the fries. The signature Prawn Juice beer was great, as were the fries, which were sort of like small steak fries. I wasn't a fan of the shrimp sandwich. Next time I might try it without the Marie Rose sauce (which is basically fry sauce in America.) The servers were super friendly. And the outdoor seating, which consists of a number of wood picnic tables, was really nice. They have indoor seating as well. I went on a busy spring Sunday and was still able to find seating outside within a few minutes. Local tip: you can park in the neighboring public car park/parking lot next to the Winking Prawn and take a 30 min walk in to downtown Salcombe, where parking can be tricky. The walk is a bit hilly. Bring coins (GBP coins) for the paid parking, if possible! Otherwise you must download an app and pay via your phone. No credit cards at the machine. It's about 1.5 GBP/hour. You need to single pound coins, not pence. read more

Decided to have breakfast here, been a few years since we were last here and we were looking forward to coming back. We noted that it's expanded a lot. We arrived 9:30am, it opens at 8:45. Clearly came on a bad day for them. They have a buffet breakfast but no hot food was out, so assumed it was an order what you want affair as it was end of the season. We were rudely informed that that's not how it works. Should have cut our losses then but decided to stick around. Finally food for the buffet got laid out. Waited for our eggs to arrive. Great, after gathering what we wanted we tucked into our much awaited breakfast. 90% of the buffet food was cold! So to round it up. Tea, eggs and sausages great. Forget the rest, and if they're having a bad day, so will you. read more

This is a waterfront brasserie and garden situated at North Sands beach Salcombe. When we visited it was a very windy, chilly day but I can imagine it would be brilliant sitting outside in the sunshine. There are a lot of tables outside which have a beautiful view of the sea., and seating inside. Suitable for families. In the evening they do a barbecue which I understand is very popular so it's best to get there early. They serve a huge breakfast, terrific seafood, steaks, and a vegetarian selection. It would be a great place to stop for sustenance if you are doing a coastal walk, at any time of year. read more

Nice place for a meal and snack in Salcombe, right near the beach. Family and dog friendly, with plenty to amuse the kids. Coffee was really nice, but the coffee size could have been bigger (ended up having to buy 2 coffees to be fully satisfied, which given the price made the coffee expensive). Beautiful location, but I have to say looking a bit tired on the outside and over priced for what we had and we've been a few times for coffee or ice cream during the day, breakfast and once for a meal. More beach cafe during the day...and loosely a brasserie in the evening. The crab salad was quite dry and had an awful lot of brown meat which isn't that nice and the white meat was a little on the conservative side and the BBQ offering is tempting but again, pricey for what you get. The staff are of university age, who don't appear to be local and to be honest seemed only to be interested in working at a beachside location and tips (I can't blame them) but there clearly is no job satisfaction and we found most to be slightly above themselves if that makes sense and not particularly friendly or welcoming. As we have a young family, someone had mentioned a little play area that the children could use once they'd finished eating and we could sit back and enjoy the view. The sandpit had builders sand in it (most of it gone), dirty old and broken toys (probably left by beach goers)...not very nice at all. We would go back for coffee etc if we'd been down on the beach but as a place to eat in the evening...stay in town...No.55 is much nicer but this place is average and relies on its location too much and the fact that it's on it's own.
