Exceptional experience. We were heading from Strazburg to Ferlach and decided to stop on the way…read more We are glad we did. We ordered salad with chicken and the kabob steak meals. Both meals were prepared and presented well. It is sometimes these serendipitous moments that create wonderful memories. Now if only we were here in the winter to enjoy skiing.

Let's start at the beginning: having to sign in to the website with my Facebook account in order to…read moresee your menu? Sincerely from all of us who aren't 19 year old marketing interns - f*ck you. But the reviews were so good, it must be worth it right? Now we arrived on time for our 8pm reservation, and were told the table would be two minutes. Ten minutes later we were told that it would be another five minutes, which would normally immediately piss me off, but hey this place has so many good reviews, it had to be just a one-off mistake right? Then we were led to a table next to the door and across from the bar. The table was too big for the seating, and because the legs were on the sides and not in the center it was nearly impossible to get into the bench seating, even for the younger people in our party, and there wasn't a lot of room for the legs of those sitting on the sides. But hey, small price for such a highly rated place, I was sure the food and service would more than make up for it. Then the waiter forgot one of our drinks, and we waited ten minutes for her glass of wine... but the food! The food should make it all better right!? I mean the reviews gushed about the food, so that'll make it all better. Finally the food came, I had the lamb, my girlfriend had the sea bass, and we were genuinely excited by the descriptions in the menu and the creativity that it promised. But, like everything else before it, we could not have been more dissapointed. The menu promised me a lamb haxe with fresh baby spinach, baked sesame noodles, and root vegetables. The lamb was dry, some parts of it near shoe-leather in texture. The root vegetables couldn't be identified as they had been cooked to mush in the same over-seasoned greasy sauce that had covered the lamb. The baby spinach may have been fresh at one time, but as it had been cooked down to a watery mush with far too little seasoning it was nearly impossible to distinguish from frozen spinach. The "noodles" simply didn't make sense, as little oblong dumplings that were baked too hard on top to get a fork through, and were just mush on the bottom as though that had been sitting in the sauce for an hour. The whole dish was a mess. My girlfriend was similarly abused. Her menu promised her an herb crusted sea bass on top of a caper risotto. Sounds good right? We thought so too... The risotto was over-seasoned and undercooked. The "herb crust" on the fish filet was three round pre-portioned green things haphazardly laid on top of the fish before it was stuck beneath a salamander or into a steam table or something, but that could have been forgiven if it had not been the BONES AND SCALES in the fish filet! These were brought to the attention of our waiter, who with all the same passion and professionalism that had gone into preparing our meal simply replied "yes, it's a fish." As if a professional kitchen is not expected to clean and scale fish filets before cooking them. All of this would have been understandable if they weren't charging 20+ euro per dish, or if this were some tourist trap town of shitty restaurants. But there is much better and cheaper food out there. Go find one of those places. (PS: to be fair, the other people at our table had steaks and enjoyed them, so if you must go there order one of those and apparently don't worry about being on time to your reservation.)

Istra is actually a Croatian restaurant, and they specialize in seasonal grilled seafood and truffle pasta. There is no standard menu - more a choice of 1, 2 or 3 course meal. The star is their fish platter which consisted of grilled fish, grilled calamari and shrimps, over a head of mixed root vegetables. The owners don't speak a lot of English but they were very hospitable. I highly recommend reading through their websites before going so you know what to expect. Now the food. Spectacular is the only word that came to mind. First time we just had the fish platter for 2 and shared between 3 people. A luxurious platter with 2 perfectly pan-fried fish, 2 shrimps in shell and 2 grilled baby calamari on a bed of carrots, squash, zucchini and mushrooms magically turned up at the table. The seasoning is basic but perfect. A complementary basket of bread also came with the meal and house white wine paired very well with the seafood fair. It was so good we went back for lunch again the next day. This time we also ordered their truffle pasta. The white truffle on the pasta was epic - appetizer size was obly €18!! I dare say the same size with black truffle in NY would have put us back at around 30 bucks and nowhere as much truffle that was on the plate. Highly recommend this place if you ever go to Salzburg and wanted something other than the standard Austrian fare.

Istra seafood restaurant was a refuge from all the meat-oriented restaurants during my week trip in Austria. Started with a tuna carpaccio topped with light olive oil, sea salt and fresh ground pepper. Main dish was a fresh white fish grilled to perfection with a side of savory veggies to pair. Meal paired perfectly with Austrian table wine which was recommended by the waiter. Absolutely delicious, wonderful waiter and happy I took my hotels' recommendation to eat at Istra.

Instead of catering to tourists with clichés of Austrian cuisine, this uses elements of Austrian cuisine and other cuisines (French, Italian) to create novel, memorable dishes. - Chestnut cream and bacon soup. This was the most memorable part of our meal! The flavor is a novel blend of both sweet and savory, and the combination of textures in this soup is fun -- light froth, creaminess, the crunchiness of croutons, the chewiness of bacon. This is a dish I will remember for years. - Fried salmon. It's really more grilled than fried. The salmon is solid and well-complimented by the saffron cream sauce and the beets. The presentation and mix of colors is also beautiful. - Truffle risotto with steak. The risotto has a good consistency, and the steak lends such rich flavor, and was cooked perfectly. Additionally, the atmosphere is hip and modern and overlooks the old town. The salt and pepper combination shaker caught our attention and you can actually buy it at the front! Anyways, I highly recommend this restaurant, especially after exploring Mozart's home!

The food is on the finer end of the Salzburger restaurant scene. Amazing pork, tasty lake trout, and the mushroom cream soup was handled with a deft, light touch. The coconut pudding with raspberry purée had only the barest hint of sweetness, which was perfect to end the meal. The chocolate mousse was nicely presented and tasty. Wine suggestions were knowledgeable and reasonable.
