It's a somber living memorial which has been preserved. The wreckage from the crash is strewn throughout the woods is just unbelievable. Unbelievable. Amazingly, the pilot and another crew member survived this, albeit in below freezing temps and snow before being rescued. Sadly, the other 7 crew members lost their lives. Be mindful that to reach this destination you must travel on a 7 or so mile (each way) dirt/gravel road with many potholes which is difficult to drive if not in a jeep, truck, or ATV.

This is simply a crash site that's been left "as-is" to the elements. It is, without doubt, the closest I ever want to be to an airplane crash site! Walking through this forest of mangled metallic debris -- and literally upon in some parts of the paths! -- is truly a sobering experience. I'm not exactly sure how this Memorial is maintained, but I'm gonna have to presume that it does get some kind of landscaping maintenance; otherwise, this whole area would, no doubt, be completely overtaken by nature after 60+ years. And, too, the placement of debris in some of the trees seemed a bit contrived, especially after all this time. These, however, are mere quibbles that don't take away from the overall immersive effect of this memorial. It was such a privilege to see and be a part. I cannot imagine this being a "go-to" destination; however, I implore anyone who's visiting the Moosehead Lake area to make this out-of-the-way drive for a visit to a memorial I've no doubt will be unlike anything you've experienced. It's a fun experience which we are attending for the third time in four years (2020 was cancelled due to the pandemic.) You're not stopping at a chocolatier at each stop. You're stopping at establishments that put a great deal of time preparing for this as well as running their own business. So give them a break, sit back, and enjoy. It's really that simple.

The rest were lackluster one of them was a small brownie that wasn't wrapped at all which made me not want to eat it given this time and age. The rest was kind of bark and a bar that was like really hard. I do wish the chocolate was a little different such as like fancy peppermint or caramel or something However the tour is today for in such a cute little town I didn't know had so many inns And I love that the places do it for free I mean I know they help they get business but they still do it

This railway is well designed! They have a large parking lot, a small museum about the history of…read morethe railway (its construction and how the steam engine works), a large gift shop, and a basic cafe that has hotdogs and some grab and go items. The facilities are modern and clean. My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our ride! We bought tickets the day of for the trip to Waumbek station on a weekday (they don't go up the summit after October). Seats are reserved, we sat at row 1 seats E and D which I think were the best seats. There was one train that sat 70 people. A roundtrip to the Waumbek station and back takes about an hour. On the 15 minute ride up, the MC went over the history of the railway and how things work at the railway. Once at the Waumbek station, we had about 20 minutes to take photos, enjoy some hot chocolate (very watered down), and make some s'mores ($4 kit available at the main station that includes Graham crackers, chocolate, and a big marshmellow, but they did provide small marshmallows for free). There is a bonfire, 3 levels of the station to hang out and take photos, and heating lamps. The views here were gorgeous! For the ride down, they do flip the steps so we went from the front row to the back row. Overall, it was a fun experience that I would recommend!

Like statues of seals. According to the memorial, "Andre was born in Robinson's Rock in Penobscot Bay on May 16th, 1961. Abandoned at birth, he was found, befriended, raised, and trained by Harry Goodridge of Rockport, Maine. Andrew is honorary harbormaster of Rockport Harbor, and is a celebrity of more than local renown. His antics have delighted people far and wide. Andre is a Harbor Seal (phoca vitulina), the only species that occurs regularly in New England waters. This small park is marinated by the Rockport Garden Club for the pleasure of the public." According to Roadside America, Andre wintered at the New England Aquarium in Boston, but for 20+ years would be released so he could swim back to Rockport (a 150+ mile journey) to visit his friends. The granite statue you can visit today was placed in the park in 1978, apparently Andre himself was there to unveil it! Personally, I think it's super cool. Seals are one of my favorite animals and Maine is one of my favorite places, so of course I've visited. I sat with Andre, I pet his little nose. Maybe the locals thought I was super weird, but... they also have a seal as a harbor master, sooooooo. (This is also a super cute little park you can have a picnic in and watch the boats coming and going.)

In the book, Pennywise brings the friendly-looking statue to life to terrify young Richie Tozier. Standing right beneath his giant boots is both impressive and a little bit spooky. It is a quick, memorable stop that brings a legendary piece of Maine history and pop culture to life.

If you find yourself in that situation, you may get 4 Star enjoyment out of looking at the Paul Bunyan statue. I'm no PB expert, but it seems consistent with images I've seen. Based upon quick internet research, it seems to be tied with Portland, OR for the second tallest PB statue in the US. The tallest is 49 feet and is in Klamath, CA. I've got to downgrade one star for the absence of Babe the Ox.

She knows her mycology and also the ins and outs of what one might find on MDI at different times of the year. Willow was very flexible about where we would forage, so we went out on my property. Within steps of crossing in front of the house we found our first edible mushrooms! With her coaching, our eyes started to focus on what to look for. She clearly explains why particular mushrooms are found in different settings (relating it to the nearby trees, usually). The whole experience was fascinating and I learned a lot. Magical! Willow is the best! Highly recommend.

This Fair is an experience you don't want to miss. It's fun for all ages and has especially…read moreexciting activities for kids, including Little Hands for Agriculture, tractor rides, and the super fun Pig Scramble. The Fair started in 1852, but has been at the present site since 1928. It's generally held annually the second week of July for 4 days. I came on Saturday and had the special experience of watching the Antique Tractor Pulling, and the junior 4-H Steer show. There are so many exciting exhibits, food, and crafts. There are also local bands playing throughout the day. Admission is only 6 bucks a day, but you get a discount if you attend multiple days.

And the Equator Line sign at the former Doc Grant's restaurant in Rangely is just that. It's literally just a big, old board that says you're (theoretically) halfway between the Equator and the North Pole (being 3,107 miles away from each). There's literally nothing to do here except look at a sign... but THIS is exactly the kind of stuff that brings me joy. I'm sure we looked super silly as we stood there taking a ton of photos, but I don't mind. Because I got to stand on a milestone along the 45th parallel and I'm a geek. So there. (Fun fact I learned: Perry, ME - which is about as far east you can get in the USA - is considered to be the first place to have marked the halfway location in 1896 via a pink granite "monument" [more like an upright slab]; now, lots of places in the northern US and various parts of Canada have them!)
