The bank vault in the middle on the main floor is really cool - apparently they used to open it so you could see inside, but it's closed now. Catering was by Railtown Cafe when I was here and everything was well organized and comfortable. Lovely place for an event. Note: It was a little hard to find since it's street number is 300, but it's not where you would expect (i.e. closest to Hamilton and W. Pender). It's on the actually on the right side of Covenant House, so the numbering is a little funky on this side of the street.

This year's catch is.... black and white film only. I've come out to this exhibit every year since it's inception. They had it at another venue in previous years, but it was horribly crowded and stuffy. This was a welcomed change, much welcomed. Maybe next year I'll do it. I'll have to dust off one of my film cameras.

Seeing, and more importantly,…read morebeing able to enjoy spaces like this are rare, especially in cities like ours where there seems to be an overwhelming need to make everything shiny and new. (yes there are foundations in place to protect our heritage buildings, but I'm making sweeping generalizations here) When the Salt Building was first being revitalized during the pre-Olympic building-frenzy era, there was talk of the space being used as a pub or high-end restaurant or some other variation on that theme. Though it may have been entirely acceptable -- and maybe even great -- if that were the case today (and who knows, it may very well be the case in the future), but it almost seems as though that would be a bastardization of this minimal bare-bones structure. The building is gorgeous. Bookended with mammoth-sized windows, allowing plenty of light to pour in throughout the almost 14,000sq foot space, exposing the elaborate timber trusses and metal hardware, and shining of the polished concrete floor, there is not one thing I'd change here. It would be a shame to cover any of it up. A perfect event location, an ideal gathering space, an overwhelmingly stunning surprise in an area that is known for making everything "pretty," the Salt Building is, at this moment, a perfect homage to its historic past.

It's a bit of a hike from downtown, but there is street parking, and we opted to take public transportation. Once you arrive, it's absolutely worth the trip. The historic building, interior design, and overall vibe are excellent. It's the kind of place where you can enjoy a great meal and drinks, have a conversation, or simply relax and hang out for a while. They also have vegan options, which always makes me happy! From pizza to dessert, there's something for pretty much every diet. The food was fresh, portions were generous, and the prices were very reasonable. They also offer happy hour specials on their house wines--yay! There are so many delicious local wines to choose from. Service is usually stellar, and this visit was no exception. Haze was incredible--friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and genuinely kind--making an already great experience even better. This tiny, one room, CoOp run platform for local talent has determination in it's name and respectable talent to keep your eye on. I attended my 2nd show recently that included a variety of mixed media artworks by 4 or 5 UBC graduates. This show was part of an underground art crawl called #SWARM13. Discovery: Passing by one day I noticed the ad board out front. It really caught my eye. We don't have anything else like this locally so it's pretty exciting. I went that early summer evening for a contemporary art show that included a feminist monologue along with an unusual, interactive tee shirt exchange. Really hard to describe in that it was very 'outside the box' I'm SO glad I went, even though I didn't know what to expect and I was amazed by the talent. This art and theater venue has SO much potential, I can't wait to go back for another show or event there. Even maybe help out or facilitate an event myself!
