I've been to super chill jazz nights that turned in to topless dance parties, and art showings that brought the city's finest together over wine. This is the coolest spot to make some friends and book that event you always wanted to see happen. Their street view is an unassuming storefront, and through the door an open performance space, then couches, a bar, and a bathroom. The entire space is tiny, there's capacity for about 70 people in total and it gets pretty crowded pretty quickly. The art and displays rotate as their showcases change. Social programs are hosted by motivated individuals year round. They are very do it yourself and very politically correct, so if you're a snobby lazy jerk you might not want to socialize too long. But honestly, you'll probably fit right in with them, and the hip neighborhood they've been a part of for years. Contact them through their website with any ideas, and check the online calender for more dates.

It's different than potluck - it's home cooked, restaurant presented meals, all prepared by hobby chefs. Plus you get to look at the insides of other people's apartments :) When I tried this experience a few weeks ago, I started at an apartment downtown with some Asian inspired dishes (3 appetizers to be exact) and then walked (which is what you do) to the next apartment in Yaletown where I experienced an amazing west coast themed dinner complete with some very tasty pilaf and chicken! We then all gathered at an art gallery where we were given chocolates, dessert wines and bubbles to finish off the night and the winners were announced based on their food presentation, hospitality and of course, the food! I would totally do this again - but they seem to sell out really fast! (If you do go, make sure you wear pretty socks - you'll likely need to take your shoes off at the door - it is a dinner party after all!)

Then you do it all over again, with another pair of strangers, at another strangers' home, having another delicious meal and wonderful conversation. Everyone (at least 24 people, because each series consists 4 pairs of hobby chefs serving 2 pairs of strangers at a time) meet at a central location after, where the hobby chefs are rated by the diners and a winner is announced. The healthy competition definitely motivate the chefs to come up with unique and delicious recipes as well as beautiful presentation. If you have a chance to try this I would recommend 100%. The hobby chefs I chose were all fantastic hosts and made my belly sooo happy and satisfied. It was such a unique dining experience that you can't compare to anything else. This looks like a one man show as he took care of seating people, making drinks, etc. We kept the orders fairly simple - we tried the Kir Royale Jell-O shots and glory hole (bartenders choice) as this place seems to be known for their shots. The Jell-O shots were quite sweet and not really strong and the glory hole one is more licorice like which is not really my thing but at least it's strong. The value is good for getting 2 at a time as it was $9CAD for 1 or $14CAD for 2. The place is pretty cool as you walk in an accountant firm first before approaching the bar. The space inside is very cramped and you're shoulder to shoulder with people so not the most optimal for a date night but if you want a place for a short visit then this would be fine.

The other reviewer seems to be from Seattle, so maybe they are not familiar with the difference between Langley and Surrey? Also, and this is very much an aside, Jessica Yaniv's swim doesn't seem to be that bad? Admittedly I've only read the one article (link below), but it looks like she was trying to organize a body positivity swim that was top-optional, which is already the case in public pools. She seems to just have wanted the focus on the swim to be for body positivity so that trans people could feel safe and wanted. I've been to a few of the skinnydipper swims and it was super tame. Just a bunch of folks hanging out at the pool without clothes on, and everyone was polite and friendly. Only a few kids would show up and they were absolutely with their parents. It wasn't a big deal. In fact, the whole point seemed to be that it wasn't a big deal. Most of the folks there were long-time naturists. Also, for what it's worth, I never saw Jessica Yaniv there. https://www.nsnews.com/local-news/genital-waxing-complainants-topless-ok-youth-lgbtq2s-swim-proposal-delayed-by-township-of-langley-3104138

I love how each room throughout the manor has its own vendors and personality. You can spend hours wandering through the historic home discovering gifts around every corner. Outside, there are even more vendors, food options and festive displays. I especially enjoyed the smaller building across from the manor that was filled with baked goods and treats. I had never visited this building before, but somehow I was getting ads on my Facebook feed about this event, and the winter market, and the building looked so beautiful, I just had to visit. It did not disappoint. Right off 16th, just south of the south Granville strip, I had clearly passed this place so many times, yet I had no idea it existed. (For folks fairly new to Vancouver, you'll probably understand, yet every native Vancouverite seems to know about this place!). SO centrally located, yet hidden off the main drag and up a tiny hill. And the building itself is just stunning. I had read somewhere that the building had been featured in many a Hallmark Christmas movie, and once you see the building, it's totally believable. It's like out of a picture book. Dressed up for the holidays, there are red berry wreaths and sparkling lights and garlands and festive Christmas trees everywhere, seemingly in every room, with fireplaces aglow with lights, and a pianist playing carols, the music wafting in the air to each room. Lady volunteers wander the floors, dressed in red and green plaid dresses and sashes. All these volunteers were extremely friendly and personable to us, from the ladies manning the outdoor tent where you purchase admission tickets and get raffle forms, to the ladies inside, explaining where various vendors and services area. As for vendors, of course there were way less than the huge seasonal market at Circle Craft at the Convention Center, but there still were quite a few on the two floors of the mansion here, and there was a decent variety in types of items available for purchase, too: from soaps and lotions to gourmet foods (artisan vinegars and oils, amazing shortbread cookies, nuts and chocolates, etc.), to jewelry makers and clothiers, to Vancouver tote bags and stationery and greeting card makers, to homemade ornaments and organic light fixtures, and more. So much more. I recognized some vendors and artisans from the Circle Craft fair, but there were many artisans that were new to me, too. I'd estimate that 50-70% of the vendors were new to me. Admission cost $15 for adults. Parking is free (I was lucky to get a spot in the small lot but there was also free street parking). If you are in the market for getting some holiday gifts, or needing to get into the holiday spirit yourself, I really recommend visiting this particular artisan market. The venue is truly magical. I am attaching some photos but honestly, they don't do the building justice.
