My grandfather had this spherical blue radio from which I first heard the sounds that I would come to love. Perhaps I was crazy being the only young male listening to the easy listening hits of a bygone era, and even a few more contemporary hits remixed to the soothing mantra of Jones College. On second thought, "remix" is the wrong word. Yes, Jones College Radio became the butt of some jokes, but in the end I loved it. No noise. No distortion. No irritation. Just good music.

Angry yelling god person All three raise my blood pressure, so I usually go left of the dial looking for the soothing, dull tones of NPR. Imagine my surprise the day I discovered Jones College Radio. People called it "elevator music", "Musak®", "Music to get your teeth extracted by". If you were young and dumb and full of... um, something, you HATED this music. But that's because you were stupid. You didn't know better. Soon you would. My love of easy listening (what Jones calls "beeautiful music") probably started around when my then gf (now wifey) dropped the needle on this Percy Faith cover of "Goin' Out of my Head". It was like having Thorazine pumped into my ears. Going out of my head? HAH! I don't think so. I can't fucking move! Anyway, it was a little much, but it made a deep impression. The real gateway drug to EL though, was undoubtedly the great Antonio Carlos Jobim, particularly the Wave record. O.M.F.G. This record is so stunningly, awfully, gorgeous that I am tearing up just thinking about it. Most of the songs clock in at around 2:30. They're just little pieces of perfection making you beg for more. I've played Mojave 20 times in a row. I know what you're thinking... "Crack". You're right. You don't hear this stuff in elevators or doctor's offices anymore. Now it's "Cool Jazz", which is right behind babies screaming, and country music as most annoying sounds on earth. Anyway, this has been all about me. The station is great. They don't play all my favorites, and sometimes I'm like "wtf is this?", but overall they do a great job of providing something that you rarely get anywhere else. WKTZ IS the best thing in Jacksonville. 90.9 is programmed on all of my car radio buttons, because really, there's nothing else on the radio, and I don't care.

I applaud this local Top 40 station for debuting new-ish music (I say new-ish because I hear…read moreeverything played 6 months in advance in larger cities) into our musically limited locale. I especially like that it was the first station to play Edward Maya and other techno-ish tracks. Not to mention that years ago they were playing Filipino-American group One Voice while the other station didn't. Being affiliated with a larger network, they have better contests where you win more money. Their morning show MJ in the Morning is also interesting as well.

Johnson has a program entitled "Down to Business" w/ Andy Johnson. Johnson is joined by other local radio programs, Dr. Laski and my favorite of which is Stan Swart's "Stan the Union Man" which focuses on the labor movement and labor related issues in Jacksonville. 105.3 also had national syndicated programs by radio hosts Tom Hartman, Ed Schultz, Bill Press, and my favorite Stephanie Miller. 105.3 and it's sydicated programs are a very refreshing alternative to the staple conservative programs of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Glenn Beck. Void is what makes Jacksonville cool - or at least, they know what makes Jacksonville cool and they share some of their secrets with us For Yelpers, their most recent edition featured very tasteful, intelligent articles about some local restaurants (some of my favorites) that read much better than their counterparts at the Times Union.

That being said, there are minimal commercials. If you are a passer by or a local, I would definitely recommend this station. It's safe for the kids to listen to! I would not recommend this, though, to drivers late at night. I found myself getting unnecessarily tired!

As you are heading west on Atlantic Blvd, right before you cross over the intercoastal waterway Bridge, look to the right where you may have noticed this tiny light blue cement block building with a huge broadcast dish beside it - yes that's WQOP 1460! Ever since WQOP 1460 asked my son and our parish Steubenville Orlando youth group to visit the station a few years ago and go "on air" to share their memories and experiences from Steubenville, I've been a fan of Queen of Peace Radio! Their radio program schedule is Chockfull of quality Catholic Talk Shows, daily Mass and classic shows from EWTN and the Vatican. Such a nice change to listen to a "quality" AM radio station that's fully listener supported whose content is both relevant and inspirational.

Haha)…read more Due to the growth of the Latin population in Jacksonville in the last few years, it was inevitable that there would be a Spanish radio station. (Now why don't we have a Filipino radio station yet? Hmm?) They play a variety of music from ballads to pop to salsa to merengue to bachata to reggaeton to pitbull (if you consider his stuff Spanish...or even music.. "Mami got an ass like a donkey, with a monkey" WHAT? haha). The only thing I hate about this station is sometimes they talk too much, and the signal is sometimes weak.
