Sometimes I call him up as different characters during the show just to mess with him - I can't help myself. Thanks to this station I have been exposed to so much new and interesting music that I literally wouldn't hear anywhere else in CT. They play stuff that most people don't hear about until two years later. They only critique I have is that there are not more female DJ's - I like their perspective as well. I've had the good fortune to have bombed around a few beach towns over the past couple of years,…read moremostly on the West Coast, but some on the East Coast too. They are fun and generally pretty low key. Unfortunately, if you don't come armed with your own music, the radio in many of these places seems to drift towards "Freebird" and "We Built This City on Rock 'n'Roll". Ugh! I don't mind a yearly dose of Freebird, but that's kind of the end of it for me. Enter WEHM. (http://www.wehm.com/) They call themselves "progressive" which might be a bit optimistic, but they throw in some Cure, X, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, etc. in with their Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Bonnie Raitt, etc. It's definitely a rock station, but a smart one. You won't have to get your plaid shirt and duct taped shorts out any more than your black frock and pancake makeup to listen. They also play just enough new stuff to keep it interesting. One of the things that I always LOVE about these little stations, and by no means is this phenomenon isolated just to small beach towns, is the locally produced commercials. "Hi, I'm Jim, the Car Doctor." "Hi, I'm Rod, the Car Nurse" (Together) "We wanna FIX YOUR CAR" Or whatever. They're always good for a little giggle. WEHM is no exception. They have the surfer dude from the local surf shop giving updates on the tide, etc. Funny stuff. So what, I'm easily amused. If you're on 27E looking for a radio station, you could do a lot worse than this.

When I was about 12, I won two tickets to a private O-Town concert through the station. I was beyond excited, but there was one problem--I have two sisters who were around 10 or 11 at the time, and I had only won two tickets. My dad wasn't going to let me go if one of my sisters had to be left out. He called the station and explained the situation, asking if there was any chance they could spare one extra ticket. I think it may have been Kerry Collins who helped us, although I could be remembering that part wrong after all these years. Whoever it was didn't have to say yes, but they did. They gave us an extra ticket so all three of us could go together. At the time, it just felt like the best day ever. Looking back as an adult, I realize someone at KC101 chose to make a small exception that probably seemed insignificant to them, but it meant everything to three little girls. It's a memory my sisters and I still talk about all these years later. So thank you to whoever made that happen--whether it was Kerry Collins or another kind person on the KC101 team. You'll probably never know how much that simple act of kindness meant, but it's one of the reasons I'll always think so fondly of KC101.
