I say "grudgingly" because the airwaves are full of crap. Every few months I press the FM button, and I want to bang my head against the steering wheel. Who wants to hear Rihanna and T-Pain every FIVE MINUTES? Really? You think Lady Gaga holds up to 30 listens in a day? Aughhhh. One magical evening, somewhere between Philly and Baltimore, my radio scan hit a 5-second patch of Neko Case. I quickly dialed back the station numbers, and there it was, 103.1 in all its unspoiled glory. I stayed glued to the frequency, sure this one song was a fluke. But then they played Talking Heads! And then Kaiser Chiefs! And then Bird & the Bee! A DJ came on the line and said they were taking requests. I punched the numbers in my phone. A man answered, and I babbled at him about how much I appreciated the lack of musical suckage his station was providing. He thanked me, and played my request ("Can You Tell" by Ra Ra Riot) 15 minutes later. I think I'm in love.

They literally play EVERYTHING on this station from Classic Rock, Funk, Blues, Hip Hop, and Alternative all entirely commercial free. They rely solely on donations from listeners who have had enough of crappy commercial radio. Dumb Things. that old Paul Kelly and the Messengers song. the synapses fire. the fingers tap. the volume increases. then My Morning Jacket comes over the airwaves. the road continues but it is no longer dark. New Pornographers play. some old Frank Zappa. Bright Eyes. Robert Plant & Allison Krauss. Sly and the Family Stone. the Nighthawks. the Arctic Monkeys. it's only when the static sets in that i realize that i have made it home. i pull up in front of my house and turn off the ignition. WTMD probably saved my life tonight. thank goodness there wasn't a Towson basketball game that night. i might still be on I-95.

I find it a little unfortunate that means they play a LOT of standards from the 70s and 80s, but they do go right back to modern/eclectic selections. They really shine when they play blocks of music based on themes. Weasel's Wild Weekend is a great showcase for interesting music that you don't always hear, and they do blues shows and other off the beaten path segments. They do a lot of community concerts and events, including Baltimore-themed contests through phone apps (which usually only work with the most up to date OSs.) This is truly a home town station for music lovers.

And WPFW FM has actual air personalities who take calls and provide the history of the artists and songs. Programming is very diverse--hooray! This is the only station on which I heard a DJ explain one of the Jewish holidays, for example.
