This is a nice little area located by FAMU. Railroad Square is a WWII-era industrial warehouse park…read morethat was turned into an art district. It is decorated with many very nice murals by very talented artist. You will also find a few sculptures around too. It spans about 10 acres and is considered one of the top selfie locations in TallahasseeIt is a creative and colorful space. There are shop, a VR reality spot, a bar, a food court, artist galley/shops, a coffee shop, a smoothie shop, screen printing stores, gift stores and boutiques, thrift stores, music and recording studios, pet stores, performing arts groups, a virtual reality arcade, and a gym. There is also an awesome Skate Art Park here if you would like to shred a few. Some notable shops include Blake's Body Bars, Cap City Video Lounge, Campus Greek, Cat Family Records, What You Got? Thrift Store, The Other Side Vintage, Sweet Boozy Cakes Bakery, Ryder's Water Ice, Morgan's Dog Training, Prime Tatoo Company, The Greenery Floral&Tuxedo Place, The Bee's Knees, Steelyard Gym, and Taste of Miami. There is over 200 free parking spaces in the park and there is free street parking within a reasonable walking distance. There is a patch of open green space outside of the virtual reality arcade. I saw some people playing catch there and also playing with a volleyball. On the first Friday of every month, the park hosts the very popular "First Friday Gallery Hop," an event that provides a lively, enjoyable experience with open galleries/shops, live music, and food. I really enjoyed this place. This is a must visit while you are in Tallahassee. You can easily spend a half day or more here. It is easily accesible and I highly recommend checking this place out if you have the chance.

Being born and raised in Tallahassee, every year we head out to downtown Tallahassee to celebrate…read morethe coming spring. There's a large parade that touts local business and communities to those viewing the parade. I've walked in the parade back when I lived in Tallahassee, as well as stood in the front trying to grab free beads and candy (is all I can remember as a kid). Oh, childhood. I recently ran the Springtime Tallahassee 10K. I regret so hard because that s*** is HARD! I had trained on a medium level 10K pace and interval, with some long but mild hills, and I had trouble finishing this one. I wish I ran the 5K... or the mile fun run lol. The advantages to finishing this race are: 1. Free beer, Publix donuts, fruit, bagels, water, free beer... (yes, note the repetitive nature of free beer) 2. Medal for everyone, because we're all winners 3. Free beer 4. Parking in the early morning is MUCH easier than after the race. If you're planning on staying downtown the rest of the morning/afternoon for the festivities, I advise getting out here early and running with the rest of us to ensure you get a perfect parking spot. Springtime Tallahassee is a classic festival for the natives and the visitors. Wake up early and check out what local Tallahassee fun is like!

This is a young festival as Georgia celebrations go, but after attending its third celebration last…read moreweekend, I can safely say that this is not one to miss. First of all, for being in the middle of nowhere (40 miles to the closest Walmart kind of nowhere) Blakely has the adorable and vibrant small town square suburbia yearns for. Half a dozen locally owned restaurants with a variety of cuisines, a few antique stores, some other small shops, the Chamber of Commerce, and county development authority all surround the gorgeous county courthouse, making this the location of a surprisingly happening Saturday night for a county with only 12,000 people. There was even a great band playing Friday night when we arrived. But onto the festival itself. It begins with a lengthy parade celebrating this region's biggest economic driver: the peanut. Miss Peanut, Miss Junior Peanut, Miss Junior Miss Peanut, and all the other incarnations of the Peanut Queen are featured prominently. From there, there are concerts throughout the day on the square, dozens of local craftsmen selling their wares, and of course, as many boiled peanuts, roasted peanuts, peanutbutter, peanut m&ms and other peanut products as you can eat. I picked up an awesome t-shirt that says "Proud 'n' Peanut Country." I'm not sure if that abbreviation is grammatically correct, but it's an awesome t-shirt. However, the highlight is by far the street dance. Once the festival concludes on Saturday evening, they clear the booths and vendor tents away from the square, and they keep the streets closed and turn the whole square into a giant dance floor. They bring in a great band, and the whole town literally cuts a rug dancing their hearts out under the stars. I'll try not to sound sappy, but imagine people of all races (well, as many as are present in extreme Southwest Georgia) and all ages (3 months to 99 years) laughing and dancing and have a great time. The party goes on until 11pm, and let me tell you, those country boys can dance! So, if you find yourself with a need for peanut memorabilia, an insatiable urge to dance like nobody's watching, or just happen to be in Early County in March, make sure to check out Peanut Proud.

ARTS IN BLACK FESTIVAL…read more The Arts in Back Festival is an annual festival that showcases the talent of black youth in the community. The event started on Friday night with a talent show at the Tift Theater. I was so proud of the young people who participated in this event because they arrived on time and were well-behaved. All of the performances were very positive, (except one) and very up-lifting as they included lyrical dance, singing and spiritual interpretations of music. It was a perfect opportunity for families and youth to bond and have a nice evening out. The one act that proved to be totally inappropriate was the female group Bella. Their act was raunchy and performed along with explicit music which was totally inappropriate since this event was well attended by young kids. I am an adult and I didn't want to see that but I am glad that they were the last act because we left immediately following. The adults who planned this event really need to get organized because it was a disorganized mess. It was scheduled to start at 7pm but did not start until just before 8 pm. When the MC finally decided to start the event, no apology was made for keeping the audience waiting. The MC clearly did not know what he was doing and did not keep things flowing, (he actually had the audience waiting for a specific performer when it was revealed that the performer was not even present). Having performers just walk up to the stage from the audience was a bit awkward. Having the MC actually pull the curtain back to continually check if the next act was ready, was just unprofessional. Audience members who arrived late should not have been allowed in the auditorium in the middle of a performance, they should have just waited for the transition. This was not only disruptive to the audience but also disrespectful of the performer. Rules governing cell phone use should have been clearly communicated to the audience before the start of the show. For example: If you need to stand up to record, please move to the aisle so as not to block the view of others. DAY TWO The festival resumes in Fulwood Park with a few food and service vendors. The guy selling the Chicken Philly was the truth! That sandwich was perfectly seasoned with a generous serving of chicken and grilled veggies on a tasty bun. As far as events, this too was an unorganized mess so we stayed for less that two hours. The problem was that the scheduling of artists was very abrupt and the entertainment did not flow continuously. Although the artists were just standing around, they were not being called to the stage to perform and perhaps they were just trying to make the performances last. It was more annoying than anything. The technician would repeatedly yell from the audience to the stage directing the artists to press the red button or grab that mic. Very unprofessional! We were really enjoying ourselves after listening to jazz, rap and spoken word art forms and waiting for the Talent Show winners to perform. Although they had several acts that were to perform, they decided to put one of their unsuccessful musical acts on stage for TWO hours. This was our cue to leave. Attendees should have been encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets because minimal seating was provided on a very warm day. We actually had our own reclining patio chairs so we were comfortable. I do hope that someone steps up to make some positive changes for next year's festival because the participants deserve better. With a little tweaking and attention to detail, this could be a festival that people will be excited to attend. *** The stars are for the performers who truly delivered. *** Organizers may want to reconsider those large yellow stars pinned on the front of the performers. (Research history). *** The winners of the talent show were phenomenal and actually moved me with their interpretive performance.
