Have never seen any problems among the swimmers-have never heard many complaints from swimmers(once in a while the water temperature might be a bit cold or warm-but never lasts for 1-2days) You can't please all the people all the time -but most if not all swimmers are grateful to have such a great facility near by. read more

So the Aquatic Center has FINALLY reopened after many, many months and you thought you might use it. Keep in mind the following: If you need any information, don't call. They don't answer the phone. If you want to comply with the sign that ask you soap up and rinse before using the pools, remember that the Ladies' showers have 10 stalls and only 3 with soap. Also, the water is STILL cold. No hot showers for you. As for the Hot Tub, it's tepid at best. Plus the chemicals faded large parts of my swimsuit, something which had never happened before they shut down the center a year ago. Are the people who run this place trying out to be in a gulag? Because it would appear so. They yell at you for rules you didn't know you had to follow, or for honest mistakes. I've been sternly reprimanded or yelled at for the following: Scanning the wrong barcode on my ID, not standing behind the black marker to check-in (What black marker? And never had to do that before). Last week I asked a staffer if the kids pool was closed and got an exasperated and loud "YES." I'm still not sure what was wrong with the question. And I dare not ask when they plan to re-open. Today the check-in line stood still for 10 mins while the person in front of us resolved some kind of pass issue. The lady at the front desk wouldn't let others scan in in the meantime and started yelling on top of her lungs at those who wanted to go ahead and scan in while she resolved the issue. The lockers are falling apart - literally, the doors are hanging off the hinges. They are supposed to open at 6:00 am, yet last week when I went in at 7:00 am they were closed because the staff didn't show up. I asked the guy at the check-in desk if he recommends I wait. Big mistake. This place is totally dysfunctional, and I feel sorry for the frustrated people who work there. I only go there because right now there is no other option for a 25m pool. read more

I haven't gone during the worst times but Saturday at open and at 5-6pm weekdays are usually not crowded. read more

Free to DC residents? What? This immaculate huge facility that keeps children in their own loud water splashing pool... and there's a whirlpool as well?? Free? YIPPEE!!!! Bring your own lock. Wilson is an amazing pool facility. Free to residents of the District, it features an enormous lap pool, a hot tub, and another pool for kids and families. It is indoors, and so open year round. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, the lap lanes run lengthwise. Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday the lanes run side to side, so each lap is shorter. After work on Tuesday and Thursday it is kind of cramped, because some lanes are given over to water polo, swim classes, and other activities. There is no more serene way to get your cardio than to swim these cool blue waters while the giant clerestory windows pour down light from above. read more

I've been swimming at the Wilson Aquatic Center for more than two years, almost as long as it's been open. It's incredible. The pool is a stellar 50 meters, which is also the major reason this facility is the finest aquatic center in Washington. One of the beauties of the pool is that swimmers of all levels swim the 50 meters, which is divided into slow, medium and fast lanes, in addition to a leisure lane for water-walking and other exercise. Newer swimmers can improve their fitness while more experienced swimmers get a good workout and improve their strokes. And everyone can enjoy the gorgeous, long stretch of water. There is also a smaller lap pool at Wilson with slightly warmer water, a kiddie pool with lots of ways to play, including kiddie basket ball. I love this pool and swim 4-5 days a week there. And it's free for DC residents! Unfortunately, there is an effort to turn the lanes around so they are 25 yards wide, which is upsetting to hundreds of people. I have always been fan of this pool but there are many things which are changing for the worse. 1. Swimmers the popularity of the pool has grown exponentially. to the point that it is always full: weekends, weekdays, evenings, mornings. the lanes are super crowded. they are many lanes that are being taken away by :classes, swim team, masters, water walking geriatrics. On top of that , there are many entitled white folk who constantly complain to the management who always take their side . these people act and behave as though the pool belongs to them. 2. Lifeguards they seem to be short staffed. on top of that, i constantly hear whistles blowing but a few years ago it was mostly quiet. they have become rather draconian in their tactics, removing people from the pool for the tiniest infractions 3. Parking this is a major drawback. there is NO parking. there used to be enough street parking. but now DC went ahead and added more meters to the street which used to be free. So that is even more revenue for the city. 4. Hot Tub constantly breaking down 5. Showers are gross. they dont really clean them very well. there is hair everywhere. the other main gripe i have with them is that the water flow lasts for a few seconds so you constantly have to press it over and over Overall, I used to love coming to this pool but it is going downhill. I love this place, BUTI grew up here and come often into town to visit my 90 yr old mother. I have to go through a big hoopla to get a day pass every time I come. I love Woodrow Wilson pool. It is very clean and staff is very organized and friendly. If you are a D.C. Resident, your admission is free- just show your ID. If not, you can pay a small fee. They have lines for slow, medium and fast pace swimmers. Very helpful if you are not in rush. Tips: - Make sure to bring the towel - make sure to bring shampoo or shower gel because sometimes dispensers are empty - make sure to have a locker if you want to keep your belongings inside. I really like using this pool for laps/exercise. I usually split a lane w someone; rarely have had to circle swim. Amenities/locker rooms are meh, but I dash in and out quickly. My ONLY problem is that the pool temp gets very COLD when the outside temp drops. It is so cold that I really can't use it in the winter bc I cannot warm up, even after swimming 45 minutes. I appreciate that it is a huge pool and probably impossible to bring the temp up a couple degrees. read more

My wife and I went earlier in the week. My wife and I used the hot tub and 12 hours later we both have a full body rash. It's a great facility but obviously has some major hygiene issues. Gorgeous new pool with a separate section for kids and adults. Lots of swim lanes for lap swimming. Shiny and sparkling clean. Parking was horrible though, but I've only been there on Saturdays. It took us a good 20 mins to find a spot, but it could be better on week days. Also the kiddie pool was very crowded. I went here on Father's Day with my 2 year old and my husband mainly just to check out the pool and maybe get our feet wet. We explained at check in that this was our first time to the facility and we were pointed towards a sign that said "This Way to Pool" and that's it. We were briefly standing just near the kid play pool area (fully clothed, so, in retrospect, in violation of rules). We were immediately approached by a very rude female guard and told to leave because of our clothes. My husband, who did not come to swim, just went to the observation area upstairs. I took off my clothes and was wearing just a suit and holding my 2 year old who was wearing trunks and a white cotton T shirt. I apologized and took my son over to the kid area. I was standing in 1 inch of water holding him near the fountain. He was a bit scared and did not want me to take off his shirt. I was trying to wait until he was a little more relaxed before I took it off. After 2 minutes, the life guard approached me again and said something along the lines of, "I dont know if you didnt understand the rules but he can NOT have clothes on." I calmly explained to her, despite my annoyance, that I was trying to get him used to the facility, please just give me a few minutes and I will try again and to take off his shirt without him going nuc. She then asked me if I wanted her to get the manager. Ummm, not really, but if thats what you need to do, fine. Shortly thereafter, my 2 year old and I were approached by the initial lifeguard, the pool manager and another male lifeguard, of who's role I was not entirely sure. Perhaps we appeared a bit more ominous than a normal toddler and small-framed woman in a bikini? The manager immediately approached me and said, "I hear you have an issue with the rules?!" So, at this point, I'm peering around the corner searching for Ashton Kutcher and a camera crew to pop out. Am I serioulsy creating this much of a disturbance?!?! Is this really blowing up like this?? She abruptly pointed at his shorts and yelled, "Are those swim trunks??" I said, "Yes." Then she points at his shirt and says, "Is that a swim shirt?" Ummm, is it a shirt in which one could swim, sure....was it a Wilson Aquatic Center approved swimming garment? Certainly not. After being harassed by the guard and the manager and still wondering about the role of the timid lifeguard holding the rescue float, I decided to leave. I had to ask them to move out of my way as they were blocking my exit. Upon leaving, my anger was no longer a mystery. My husband also went and explained to the manager how she had...mismanaged the situation. We will not be going back and I intend on placing a formal complaint about the guard and the manager, whos names currently escape me, but they were both young black women in their 20s and would be better suited for jobs not dealing with people. read more

This is a review of the MANAGEMENT, not the pool itself - which is great (new, clean, and nice, albeit very chlorinated - but I can understand the need for that). Also, DON'T forget your ID, and DON'T bring cash, only plastic will get you in. If you are bringing your small child, make sure your swim diaper is approved before you change and get in the water. They won't ask you. You must ask them. The Manager here is called Rodney, and he literally takes all the enjoyment out of the experience. He is clearly on some sort of power-trip. Kids are afraid of him and parents are intimidated, as he throws people out. He is rude to all, in the name of enforcing rules. He yelled AT 2 girls for approaching the office area, vs following the signs to the pool area (it was their first visit). This is supposed to be a community center and a place for families and fun.... The first time we went there (over school winter break), they had some sort of filter problem and kept saying it would be fixed shortly (within minutes) so we waited with 2 grown-ups and 5 kids in tow, playing games in the upstairs waiting area. They kept updating the wait time saying they WOULD open in a little while longer over and over again for 2.5 hours, until they said - go home we aren't opening today. It ended up being a lesson in handling disappointment for the kids, who learned to be flexible and that these things happen. No big deal. The second time we did swim. But as we arrived, he was yelling at a mom and her (barely) one year old baby, who wanted to swim at their neighborhood pool. The lady's elderly father was visiting from out of town to see his grandkid and had forgotten to bring his ID, so Rodney wouldn't let him in no matter what. Not even in the pool area to relax and watch/enjoy is grandson in the water. Rodney showed no understanding; had zero empathy and was even yelling AT her, reminding her that he was in charge. She yelled back and it was a tense situation even for those watching and waiting in line. Her father had suffered a stroke recently and the lady was upset. Her dad was well enough to walk home, but not enough so to come back with ID. Once in the pool Rodney continued to show his mean-streak, even with kids, yelling AT them. You can shout out reminders to "Walk! Don't run!" You don't need to shout AT the small children, who try, but are impulsive/excited/forgetful. If I actually believed this was his in the name of safety, I wouldn't complain - and my own child is one of the forgetful ones who will eventually slip. But Rodney really gives the impression of someone who could cared less. I believe he enjoys intimidating. Let the parents do the disciplining and threatening, if indeed threatening is even their style of discipline. There is a way to talk to people to get them to follow rules and do what you want, and then there's just downright rude, and disrespectful and even kids are smart enough to sense the difference and want to get away from you. He continued to yell at the lady with the baby about the type of swim diaper she had on her baby, and she ended up leaving after she said did have a swim diaper on him and showed him. He told her he was the manager and knew what a swim diaper was. He also went up to another lady who was nursing her baby at that moment and demanded to see her baby's swim diaper - his diaper was the kind he wanted to see. Everyone totally understands the need for swim diapers, and the pool needs to enforce this. How about ensuring this at the time people are paying - and perhaps offering for individual sale the type of swim diaper the management prefers? Don't throw them out after the fact. It's already a significant effort for one grownup to get in the water with a small baby as it is. Would have saved a lot of time to send them home with grandpa, vs allow them in to swim and throw them out afterward. Other people were watching this exchange and everyone was sort of wondering what was wrong with him. Another woman admitted she had been yelled at and kicked out of the pool 2 other times... The point is, there is a way to speak to people that doesn't come across as totally offensive and demeaning. Manager, Rodney is not an example of this. read more

The DC Free Swim program is one of the best things about living in DC. I'd really give them 4.5 stars, but I rounded up. The Wilson pool is gorgeous - hands down the most impressive pool I've ever seen. The best thing about the center, in my opinion, is that the entire Olympic sized pool is "the deep end," keeping kids quarantined in their own "leisure pool." This is a pool ideal for serious swimmers. I appreciate that they came to a compromise on the 50 meter versus 25 yard debate. Personally, I prefer the 25 yard set up because you have more of a chance of getting a lane to yourself. If you feel the same, the Takoma Park Aquatic Center is a great option on the "50 meter days." It's also a 50 meter pool, but it's always set up with a ton of 25 yard lanes. I generally go during weekday daytime hours, so I can't speak for the crowds on nights or weekends. My one gripe is the way the showers are set up. I understand that they don't want people to leave the water running (and let's face it, there are plenty of idiots out there who will). But that makes your shower a series of frustration 30-second bursts of water because you have to keep pushing a button to get water to flow. Let me explain how it goes: 1. Push button 2. Wet body 3. Push button 4. Wet hair 5. Push button 6. Finish wetting hair 7. Pause to soap up (bring your own - their soap containers are often empty) 8. Push button 9. Rinse 10. Shampoo hair. 11. Push button 12. Rinse hair. (Hair is long) 13. Push button. 14. Finish rinsing hair. 15. Oops - hair still has some soap in it 16. Push button. 17. Finish rinsing hair. 18. Condition hair 19. Push button 20. Rinse hair. 21. Push button 22. Finish rinsing hair. Other tidbits - bring a lock, they have a swimsuit dryer (awesome), and don't forget your ID! My dear God. I can only imagine spoody New York City spa/health club combinations having nicer pools. Granted, I know it's really new and, therefore, quite clean, but, hey, it's Upper Northwest: they're gonna keep it spotless for years to come. Bathrooms so clean you could eat off the floor. God only knows why you'd want to do such a thing, but it's a pretty sanitary place, so I doubt you'd get hepatitis as a result of your weirdness. Showers that worked amazingly and didn't have hair all up in the drains. The only downside is that you can't control the temperature (though the water comes out quite warm) and you have to keep pressing the button if you plan to stay in the shower longer than 30 seconds. But that's okay. The actual pool is great. Since I'm still learning how to swim, I stuck to the smaller, more child-populated pool (but got a whole lane to myself!). The water was so warm! Which I pray was not from all 50 kids pissing in it at the same time, but even if that had been the case, there is so much chlorine in the water, it must still be clean enough to drink. That said, beware that this water will (a) sting the rubbish out of your eyes if you don't wear goggles and (b) bubble up something terrible if you splash or lap too quickly. (But it's a great place for kids, with splash buckets spewing and things.) The lifeguards look qualified and didn't bother anyone. And there are a TON of floating practicing thingies, like kickboards, spongy things, and those spongy things that look like weights, so it's divine for beginners like me to come here and practice. And it's free for DC residents! I'm going to milk this place like a cow for the next six months. I'll be sad to say goodbye to DC if I have to lose Wilson as a perk. read more

Safety concern about Wilson pool - Are hoverboards safe on deck area? Today I went swimming to Wilson Pool and as I walked on the deck area I saw someone on an electric hoverboard (please google 'hoverboard' and take a peak at youtube videos if you don't know what it is). My first impression was that a hoverboard on the deck are is a potential serious hazard as it may fall in the water and electrocute swimmers. So I approached the lifeguard on duty to complain about the situation, and he said that the person on the hoverboard was actually the pool's manager (I was astonished). So I talked to the pool's manager and complained about what I consider a hazardous situation. Instead of apologizing or showing any sign of regret, he said (in a quite defiant tone) that I should do my own research before complaining about it. That given the size of the pool, a hoverboard poses no hazard to swimmers. I completely disagree. However, more research might be needed to shed some light about the potential hazardous situation. So I ask you all the question: Are hoverboards safe on deck area? If the answer is "no", then, how should we go about management personel rolling an electric hoverboard on WIlson's deck area? read more

For a swimmer, this is a remarkable facility. There are plenty of lanes for lap swimming and they're nice and big - and delineated for slow, medium and fast swimmers, something not done at Haines Point. The pool is gigantic and very deep and 3/4 of it is devoted to lap swimming. The pool is built to give the serious swimmers their space - and the non-serious swimmers theirs. There is a large kiddie area with waterfall features and separate pools for kids to play water basketball. Part of this area, but separated, are lanes for swim lessons. And to top it off is a large whirpool bath that could fit 50 people. The building itself is quite attractive and powered in part by solar panels on the roof. After a lifetime of expecting very little from the DC government, I am amazed to see it produce something this fantastic. read more

Whip out your DC identification and you're in to the GREATEST swim facility of all time for FREE. This is a 50 meter indoor pool (configured for 25 yards sometimes) with great locker rooms (bring your own lock). This place is so clean that you could eat off the floor (although I wouldn't recommend it). If you're not a DC resident, you have to pay up to $7 (depending on your age). Wilson is new (two years old) and is nicer than any facility (including university pools) that I've ever seen. They always have the pool set up for lap swimming but have a smaller pool for kids and beginners. Plus, let's not forget the huge jacuzzi to relax in after (or instead of?) your swim. Swim caps are not required and they have swim aids (kick boards, for ex.) for your use. And the swimmers are VERY friendly except for when I passed Michael Phelps the other day and he got visibly upset. He was swimming with all those gold medals around this neck to show off and I think this slowed him down a bit. The pool can get crowded (8 people per lane) during peak times (after work) and when swim clubs take up 3-4 of the lanes (not that often), but otherwise you shouldn't have more than 4-5 people in your lane in the 50 meter configuration and 2-3 when set up for 25 yards. Right across the street is Whole Foods and the Tenleytown metro stop (Red Line)... all the money you save by swimming for free you can blow at WF. This pool is a DC Metro facility and is attached to Wilson High School, which has a track if you want to do some running and then swim or shower. read more

One fantastic benefit of living in DC is the access to numerous free public pools. Funded through tax payers dollars, the Woodrow Wilson Aquatic Center offers an olympic size, in-door lap pool as well as a large hot tub and baby pool. The aquatic center is open year round, seven days per week with long hours of access to the public each day. I highly recommend checking out this pool especially if you have little kids. There are two basketball hoops and large buckets that dump water into the baby pool. Also, sun exposure isn't an issue because the pool is located indoors. read more

I'm sorry - this place is nothing short of incredible. Sparkling facility and it is FREE for DC residents. 50m lanes with open swim every day of the week barring Tuesday and Thursday, which are 25m. Saturday is a split between 25 and 50. It get get busy in the evenings, but it has never been so busy that I couldn't fit in a lane. If you are not that serious, you can still swim here! There are lanes for every speed. I would highly recommend that you stick to your speed though because the fast lanes can get quite intense, and the serious swimmers don't like it when you hold them up! read more

It's nice to have a 50 meter indoor pool in the city. Great facility. Only complaint is there is no place in the men's locker room to put your gym bag down while you're in the shower. Also there are some security issues. On my first visit, there was a security guard in the locker room. On the second visit (a Saturday afternoon) there wasn't one. When I returned from my swim, my lock was gone and my wallet had been stolen. The staff were helpful in letting me use the internet to contact my banks and stop payment. Another swimmer had his car keys stolen. Definitely do not take any valuables in with you. If you have a car key with an electronic fob on it, think twice. They do have free locks to use. I wish I had used one of their rather than my own. Who'd a thunk? But then a friend of mine said "You go hunting where the deer are." read more

DC spent a fortune on a beautiful pool facility and turned it over to incompetent management that isn't fit to run a ghetto McDonald's. The pool is often closed for various reasons, nobody seems to care. (Especially the kids pool). You get your bathing suits, your kids, etc. and drive there and they are like "sorry, we're closed because of some stupid reason we could have avoided but were too stupid to realize." And they could care less that you've wasted your time. They don't answer the phone if you call and ask if they are open and if they do answer they often give you bad info. It's a joke. Half of the lifeguards text on their phone instead of watch the pool. Your tax dollars at work. Probably the thing that annoys me most is the check-in. It's a FREE pool for DC residents but I have to wait 20 minutes for the slow-as-I-want-to-be front desk person to check everyone's ID and run it through the computer. For what purpose, exactly? Are they checking to make sure you paid your parking tickets and property taxes? It should be flash your ID and go but they make the process excruciatingly long at busy times for no good reason whatsoever. read more

4 stars for being the only public 50 meter pool in DC. And for the amazing hot tub. The facility is really clean; other yelpers have complained that the locker rooms are gross, but I've never seen a problem. On the contrary, every time I've been there has been a person continuously mopping the locker room floors and cleaning the bathrooms. There are a couple of issues keeping it from being 5 stars though. First, they regularly close the kiddie pool if they have a life guard unable to show up. Better than closing the lap pool, but make sure to call ahead if you're planning to bring your kids. There have been numerous occasions when I've seen parents show up with a bunch of children, just to be told the kiddie pool is closed. Caveat: the facility itself gets 5 stars. The 1-star review is for the staff. I'm there for a swim class with my child and apparently we're in violation of some arcane pool rule every time we walk in -- and someone is always more than happy to point it out to us. An earlier reviewer used the word "harass" and at this point I don't feel like that's too strong a word. I get having rules, but for crying out loud when you have 70 or 80 of them, maybe the people who unknowingly break them aren't the problem, ya think? The front desk staff do NOT look happy, welcoming or inviting and could use some remedial training in customer service. No wait, scratch that: they could use pink slips, because I'm sure there are other people more than willing to do the same job with a much better demeanor. read more

Best public pool ever!! Olympic long course lanes that are the widest I have ever seen!! There is availability from 6AM to 9PM and it never seems to be crowded. I normally swim at the Montgomery County pools but there there availability is just too spotty. Parking can be a little bit of a hassle but if you live in the Metropolitan area it's nothing you're no already used to. I will only swim here from now on!!! read more

8/30/18 SECURITY ALERT: 2 guys in men's lockers cut locks from multiple lockers around 5 p.m. They snuck in when there was no one at the front desk. They got away with multiple wallets, keys, other valuables. Police report filed - but front desk staff didn't seem to take it all that seriously. Problems: Cleanliness is not always the best (as noted in other reviews). Lifeguards seem to be short-staffed. Front desk is insufficiently staffed. Otherwise, generally a fan - one of the largest pools with lap lanes in DC, and it's free for DC residents. read more

This place has no respect for people with disabilities,especially the manager of this place very untrained, unprofessional and discriminating people with disabilities, the manager of this place kicked out my 10 years old artistic boy from the swimming pool, what a shame a place like this discriminates kids, after he spoke to me telling me that I need to leave, I told him please give me more minutes because I need time to make my kid understand that we're going to leave, the manager was very rude and told me that he could give me only 5 minutes because I had to leave soon, my question is what kind of person kick out from a fun place a special needs child ? Why this place doesn't do a better training to accept kids with disabilities instead discriminate them? I never felt so bad in my entire life, no place never discriminated a kid like this , I left the place in tears, terrible place, terrible experience, my kid is traumatized. And guess what my son did nothing wrong to be kicked out like that , he was only swimming and having fun. read more
