Didn't even take pics because we didn't stay - broken facilities and freezing. We were told heater on the main pool has been broken for 2 months when we asked why it was so cold (I'm talking ICE BATH COLD). My wife and I have never experienced such incompetence at a public pool and we've been swimming at public pools for twenty years. The staff plays favorites, letting the swim team stay twenty to thirty minutes past their reservation time because the coach (and this is a direct quote from a staff member) is 'also an employee.' When we pointed out this approach poses an undue burden on the taxpaying public, which should have equal access to the pool during the hours the pool is open, we were mocked and asked to leave. My wife is six months pregnant and we are in the midst of a global pandemic. The staff's solution? Swim in a lane with six other people while the swim team monopolizes the other three. Reading through other comments, I see most negative reviews have to do with maintenance and hygiene issues. And yes, the locker room is filthy and the swimsuit wringer is broken. However, none of this would matter to me (although it is puzzling) if it weren't for the injustice and nepotism we experienced today as well as the complete lack of empathy by staff members. If the team is scheduled to get out at a certain time, that's what should happen. Instead, we experienced the kind of nepotism more congruent with an autocratic country than the U.S. I'm truly horrified and disappointed and will be complaining to DPR immediately. read more

How depressing! I returned to Rumsey for a swim this week after being away for two year and the facilities are in the same sad shape as before I left. The bottom of the pool is lined with junk, the women's showers are still scalding hot and cannot be cooled down, the swimsuit wringer does not work, and the hairdryer is falling off of the wall. Really? So why is it that almost every other public pool gets face lifts but Rumsey? This situation is unacceptable. read more

I've been swimming here for several years, and I am constantly amazed at the poor state it is in. I've complained to the city, but of course nothing gets done. Pros: Pool temperature is usually good. Hours are convenient, although if there is a swim class, open lanes are severely limited. Pool area is brightly lit due to the many windows. It's free and conveniently located behind Eastern Market. Neutral: They are always playing music pretty loudly in the pool area. If you like that type of music, it's fine. If you don't, too bad. Cons: Locker room isn't very clean. The "suit mate" machine that dries your swimsuit often doesn't work, and when it does, the bucket they place underneath to collect the water is always overflowing. And you have to step in that dirty water. Pretty disgusting. I wear eyeglasses and need them up to the point I dive in, but there is no safe place to put my glasses while I swim. I carry a towel with me, too, but no place for that either. The showers don't work properly. Each one has it's own method of showering you with water. You won't get the temperature you like. They should also have a timed automatic shutoff, because kids turn them all on and leave them flowing as a prank. Total waste of hot water, but no one cares of course. The soap dispensers are either empty or broken. The walk from the showers to the pools is dangerous because of the VERY slippery floors. They put out mats in some places, which helps, but who designs a pool with slippery floors? To enter, you have to show ID, sign in and get buzzed in. Except that often the door is propped open. It's like entering a prison without any of the security. They have plenty of lifeguards, but during one class of children, I actually witnessed a young boy drown. Pretty alarming, but just another day at the pool. Recommendations: Always lock your belongings. Do not bring your wallet, just your ID. Do not bring anything you don't want to lose. Wear flip-flops so you don't have to step into dirty water on the floor and you have some traction while walking. Make sure you shower well afterwards to get the strong chemicals off plus any other things you might have picked up. Bring your own soap. Do not expect to be rescued if you are drowning. Otherwise, it's a great place to swim. read more

Employees lazy!! They sit inside past the time it opens (6am) weekdays until security comes. They don't let people in to swim early even though they are supposed to be open and the times are on the door. This is the third time I came up here around 9am and the door is locked. HELLO PATRONS OF RUMSEY AQUATIC CENTER! Why does nobody here know how to circle swim? No, you don't need to have a seizure at the end of the lane to get my attention/permission to get in. No, you shouldn't just assume that I want to "split the lane" with you, because if you've ever been to any normal aquatic center, or even if you've read the sign on the wall at this one, there are specific instructions on how to CIRCLE SWIM. Really people, get with the program, it's common courtesy. Coming from someone that's been involved in competitive swimming for over a decade, I'm not going to have some blissfully unaware idiot try and tell me how it works. Rant over. Pertinent to the facility itself, it is actually great, and the staff is just fine. Ignore the people complaining about the staff and the facility itself. It is a hole in the ground with water in it, the staff cleans it and maintains the safety. They aren't here to kiss your feet. Believe it or not, if you're nice to them, they're nice to you! On my lazier days, I love chatting with them (but don't do it if they're in the chair, because they're paying attention to the pool. I'm looking at you, parent trying to complain while your child is running rampant around the facility). Your personal belongings got stolen from the locker room? Well 1, you ASKED for it if you didn't put a lock on your locker, and 2, (even if there was a lock), you have nobody to blame but yourself anyway! I keep my stuff on the pool deck within close proximity of my lane because the locker room storage is AT YOUR OWN RISK LIKE ANY OTHER POOL ACROSS THE COUNTRY. read more

I am 26 years old. I have a bachelor's degree from Georgetown University. I am halfway done with my master's from the same institution. I am a published author of a short story. I am married to a wonderful, wonderful man. I like to think of myself as a fairly well-accomplished individual. However, there is one thing I have not conquered: swimming. To make sure I wouldn't drown on my honeymoon, I finally decided to sign up for lessons. Yesterday, R and I trekked to Rumsey so I could practice between lessons. Oy. The locker rooms were pretty gross. The floors were wet (I know it's a pool, but how are the floors ALWAYS wet EVERYWHERE), only about 5 of maybe 50 lockers could be locked, and there was zero hot water in the showers. There were, however, plenty of gnats in the shower. Thank God my freshman dorm was nearly unlivable, otherwise I would not have been to shower here. Again, no hot water, which might not have been all bad because the pool water is FRIGID. And what is it with middle-aged women in locker rooms assuming that I want to see all of their everythings??? I swear, one woman stood talking to her friends topless for at least 5 minutes. C'MON, seriously? Put a shirt on! Aside from being a bit cold, the actual pool was fine; clean, I thought, and not really chlorine-y. Buuuuuut, later in the day, I got a terrible headache and started to feel nauseous, and I don't think it had anything to do with what I had for lunch. Even today, I still feel a little icky. R admitted to not feeling all that great after exiting the pool himself. Sooooo, not sure what to conclude. I know it's free, which is great, and that it's a pool full of water where one can try to get over one's crippling fear of drowning. But until I'm confident that no pool germs seeped into my bloodstream, I'll be going to other pools in town. read more

This public pool is perfectly fine for swimming laps, but you need to pay attention to when the lane configuration is changed to the useless 20 yard configuration. The pool has great hours and is usually not too crowded. There is a really early practice time for masters swimmers. If you like to workout early, this is your best bet. After practice ends, the pool fills up with triathletes. And the afternoon sessions have a steady trickle of people. The pool itself is fairly deep and the lane swimming is well organized. I like the swimming aspect of this location very much. Generally, the place gets the job done. The entry is a weird prison style buzzer system. Show your ID, get buzzed into the locker rooms. In fact, the entire place has the appearance of a minimum security prison. There are a ton of rules, including zero photography, no one is allowed on deck unless they are swimming and in a real swim suit (no mesh shorts), and you have to shower before getting in the pool. The sheer amount of rules is off-putting, but something probably happened to cause introduction of the rules in the first place. The lifeguards are very, very strict. The locker rooms are nothing to be excited about: they are small, kinda dirty, and the showers are often just cold (no hot water to many of them). Just something to consider. The pool is located right by Eastern Market and there's usually plenty of parking in the neighborhood. read more

This review is based on swimming classes I recently started. First - some of the previous reviews said you can't bring your own locks for the locker room. Maybe they recently rennovated them, because you can use your own padlock. I would suggest this. Second - the pool is cold! If you aren't doing laps, which I'm not because I'm just learning in class, expect to be cold. Especially in the fall/winter. Finally - if you are on the fence about signing up for classes, you should totally do it. The instructor, Maurice, is great. He works with all levels, from those who are scared to get in the water, to those who are experienced swimmers. He makes class fun but at the same time acknowledges that it can be challenging. Considering the pool is free for DC residents, and classes are only $10 for the six week course, there's no reason not to come here! read more

The Rumsey pool in Eastern Market is open early in the morning and late on weeknights (9pm) and also has weekend hours for early bird or night owl swimmers and weekend warriors. The lap pool is gorgeous, clean, and appears relatively new. On weekend afternoons I never felt crowded in my lane (usually had it to myself). There is also a shallow kiddy pool if you want to take the kids. The lap pool has kick boards and pull buoys for public use. It might also have floatation belts and pool jogger dumbbells, but I never bothered to take notice for those things. Note - this pool is indoors. Locker rooms - I can only speak for the ladies' room. If you forget a lock, you can lock a locker by inserting a quarter. I usually just took my bags out to the pool deck with me. Showers are automatic, which means you can't control the pressure or temperature, and sometimes if you lean outside the range of the sensor the water will turn off. Everyone seems to know the best shower to use (the first one to your right as you enter from the pool). This facility is free to DC residents! Be sure to bring your proof of residency, as they do check at the entrance. Just around the corner from the farmer's market, I used to come to swim on the weekends and pick up a fresh peach or apple to snack on during the trip home. read more

FYI people: apparently this (indoor) pool is not grounded, therefore they close it when there's lightning. Not sure why they didn't think it would be a good idea to prepare for lightning in a city with as many thunderstorms as DC, but I just got turned away. I just reallocated to DC and I've been going to WR aquatic center for two weeks. I have to say that the staff and life guards are all very friendly and helpful, infrastructure is great, pool is good for lap swimming, regulars are well aware of pool etiquette, installations/lockers are good... And this is all free for DC residents, if you're foreigner, you can prove that with your USPS change of address confirmation. Monthly membership for non DC residents is ~$50, day pass is ~$7. Bring you own lock in order to use the lockers, otherwise you can take your backpack with to the pool area and lean it to the wall. read more

The Rumsey pool at Eastern Market pool is an adequate 25 yard facility with average cleanliness and a good temperature. During lap swim time, half of the pool is divided for lap swimming and the rest for aqua jogging. Only four or five lanes (25 yards ea.) are dedicated for lap swimmers. This is not an adequate amount for fitness swimmers. The aqua joggers and floaters should give up at least one lane. After 9:30 am until 12 noon and from 5-7 pm (check for hours), the lap lanes dissect the pool horizontally. At that time, the lap lanes are only 18-20 yards. It is weird. You feel like you are swimming in a hotel pool. Around 7-9 p.m., the lap lanes go back to being a proper 25 yards. Pros: the pool is free, the locker rooms were recently renovated, some staff members are nice Cons: DC residents pay an enormous amount of taxes for sub par athletic facilities. The hours are weird on weekends: Mon - Fri: 6:30 - 10 am, 12 noon - 5 pm, 6:30 - 9 pm; Sat: 1 - 5 pm; Sun: 10 am - 5 pm. They force swimmers to swim laps in 20 yards instead of 25 sometimes. The pool opens at 1:00 pm on Saturday. Too many lanes are dedicated to aqua joggers and floaters. Sometimes, staff members walk around in pajamas and slippers. Some staff members are surly. The locker rooms are still dingy, the new shower curtains have ripped off the stalls, and there is no soap. The area outside of Rumsey Pool is dilapidated and depressing. They need to plant some flowers and trees and repair the benches. read more

In spite of the hours, the place still gets a five star rating. Why? 1. Public pool that is actually pretty clean. 2. They have lanes set aside for laps. Fantastic. They even have a slow lane. 3. While the hours could be better, it is open on the weekends and on a few weekdays, early am and late evening. If you go by on the weekends, Eastern Market is fantastic to go to after a lovely swim. 4. It's indoors. No sunburns are a good thing. Great way to beat this heat wave. 5. I can't believe this is free! I'm not training for a triathlon or anything, I'm just pregnant and need a nice space to water jog. The water is warm, they have plenty of floatations devices and other water exercise equipment, and the facilities are incredibly clean. They also have a hair dryer and a bathing suit spinner, which I took for granted until I went to the center at Tacoma Park where they offer neither. Tacoma is much larger, so you'll have a better chance to get a lane. However, if you're just a casual pool user, you can't beat this place - particularly for the price. read more

The pool located near the metro Eastern Market, walk on 7th street, behind Eastern Market red building. I normally swim at Wilson aquatic center pool, Tenley town but they closed till September 8, for repair and cleaning. It's my first time and will be my last time here.The pool is quite small. I arrived 8:15 am and there were a lot of people. There was an aerobic class, pretty good class actually. Women room was packed, there are the lockers that used a quater but they didn't work so I just carried my stuff at the pool. After 15 minutes lap swimming, I saw a bug at the pool. It's not just a bug it's a cockroach.Well, I don't mind so I continued swimming another 15 minutes and left. Such a tuna can locker's room for women. Interesting experience. If you are a fan of Wilson aquartic center. Don't go to this pool. read more

I come here on weeknights after work (6:30pm) for some lap swimming. It's a decent pool with friendly staff. My biggest pet peeve is that there's a local swim team that swims during open swim time and they take up some lanes. There's only about 5 dedicated to lap swimmers, so when others are monopolized by a team that could come at a different time when only they could use it would make sense. I even asked one of the lifeguards when the swim team would be done since they were swimming before the pool opened back to the public and he said they would be done by 6:30 pm. About 6:50 rolls around and they're still there. That's my only beef, though. This place is a great spot for free exercise as long as you're a DC resident. I was a little nervous after I read all of the terrible reviews. However, I frequently swim at the Rumsey Pool now. I think it is a great neighborhood pool. Is it as amazing as the Wilson Pool or Takoma Pool? No, but it is way more convenient for me, and serviceable. I've found the staff there to be friendly and kind. A lifeguard even gave me swimming tips when he noticed I was such a regular. The locks do not work on almost any of the lockers, so I just take my pool bag out to the gym deck. I have never had any problems. They have made a real effort to keep the locker rooms clean and nice. And, you can't beat getting a fresh crepe coming out of the pool on Saturday or Sunday, and seeing Eastern Market right outside. read more

I swim at Rumsey on a regular basis and I have watched the facility go gradually downhill. Just today I was swimming and the chemicals in the water were out of whack. Several of us experienced dry and puckering mouths, sore throats and eyes. We left the pool early. More regular problems include scalding hot water that cannot be regulated in the women's locker room, dirty tiles on the walls and floors, lack of soap in the shower stalls, torn shower curtains, and no hand dryers. Given what Capitol Hill residents pay in dc taxes, this situation is pretty pathetic. read more

We were from out of town and caught off-guard by the pool at the rental condo being "closed for the season." After looking around we found this community pool. The staff were friendly and helpful. There's a fee for non-D.C. residents which can be paid in person with check or money order. There's a post office nearby where you can get the money order. I recommend checking carefully with the facility before getting your money order. We ended up overpaying due to a miscommunication. During the week it is not very crowded but the "kiddie" pool was closed. read more

Great community pool. I love all the families and the people of different sizes, shapes, ages, colors. It always made me feel like I was connecting to the people who lived around me. Hours and year-round pool are great. I love the giant wall window that lets natural light into the pool. Lockers take a quarter to lock, but are almost always broken. Credit cards were stolen from my locked gym locker at this pool, and within 1/2 hour over $1,300 was charged on them. There was no security guard/staff checking people in, and the locked door to the men's room was propped open, allowing the thief easy pickings. When the police responded, the manager on-duty didn't know how to operate the security cameras to review footage. I later alerted Parks and Rec, who responded that they were not responsible. Yes, it's nice that we have many public pools in DC, but they should to be staffed and secured like any private gym would be. read more

I had my first experience at this pool today and it was fantastic. The facility is spacious, clean, and very conveniently located. As a serious lap swimmer I found plenty of open lanes as well as pull buoys and kickboards for use. It's great for kids and families as well, as they get to enjoy the pool out of the way of the lap swimmers. On top of that the location at the end of Eastern Market is perfect for a post-swim snack or coffee. I highly recommend William H Rumsey, way to go DCPR! read more

This pool is now worse than useless to me. There is no such thing as a "20-yard lap lane," which is how the pool is set up every afternoon for the rest of the summer, and the mornings were crowded enough before they became the only time the lap lanes were properly configured. It's fine that you want to have space for your non-lap swimmers. Put in four lap lanes and leave the other half of the pool for the kids and the water walkers. But just because they aren't swimming laps doesn't mean they have to be quarantined from the deep end, and you don't need to inconvenience the lap swimmers in the process. read more

I really enjoy this pool. The men's locker room is small but gets the job done. Every time I go there are a few people there but never too crowded. As far as lanes go, I have never ran into someone or been hit so I call it a success. The price is free so really why would you go anywhere else? read more

The Rumsey Aquatic Center is not the nicest in the city, but its ok. We had a great experience, but the broken (but present lockers) were one of the reasons that I did not give it four stars. There also was a bit of a smell (and it wasn't of clean or chlorine) in the women's locker room. The actual pool was great, especially the kiddie pool. My 14.5 month old loved it AND we were the only ones in that particular pool. So we had free reign! :) read more

I went to take my three year old in the wading pool, but it was empty, and had been for months the manager said. He also said he had no idea when it would be fixed. Came to my free first-time trial aqua aerobics class with Mara G. No one was at the front desk to sign me in or tell me any rules. People in DC polos just shouted garbled instructions at me from across the pool: "Take off your aqua socks before entering the pool." Huh?! Why? That's what aqua socks are for. "Stay on that side of the rope. No. That side." The instructor of the class noticed I was doing the moves of the class and came over to me and told me to get on the other side of the rope. Half-way thru my first time in the free-trial of the aqua aerobics class, I got put out of the pool for being on the wrong side of the rope. No, I was not given an option to get back on the other side of the rope. I was told to get out. Yep. Some cowardly, power-hungry, mythical, stupid, mean-ass manager named David, who never addressed me directly, who never even showed me his face, put me out of the pool by telling some other staff person to come tell me to get out. Coward. All of this confusion could have been solved in advance by saying 1 side of the rope is for class; the other side of the rope is where you take your free trial. Anyway, this pool used to look so much bigger when I was a kid and it was called the Natatorium. Now, it is just as small as the manager who runs it. I've experienced better. I've swam here off and on for years and I'm not a whiner type of a "Yelper". In fact I rarely put out reviews but here goes: - The place gets one star because I can't give it less. - I'd give it half a star if I could. - The half star is because it's free - though I'd pay for a better neighborhood place to swim. - Security sucks. The front door buzzer on the men's side doesn't work so a cone is often left in the doorway for access. - There's often no one at the front desk. - Even the sign in sheet lacks a pen half the time. - Other reviews say the staff is friendly. Why shouldn't they be? They don't do much of anything. - The men's room shower walls are filthy and black with mold. - The floor may get mopped but it hasn't been properly scrubbed in years! - Mold abounds in changing room areas, grime over drains, band-aids left on the floor for days! - More often than not there's little or no soap in the showers. - Many of the faucets don't work and/or the shower heads are crap. - The lockers aren't regularly cleaned. - The amount of chlorine in the pool is enough to make you go bald. I know this is a public pool and free so go if you want to swim but don't dare expect it to be clean. I also know there's talk of tearing it down or whatever but I'm just amazed at the lack of basic maintenance. The DC Parks guy running the place should be put on notice. There are often little kids messing around and likely messing their pants in the pool, old ladies aerobicizing in the shallow end and folks who don't understand how to execute a circle swim situation. This public pool saved my life when I was recovering from my stress fracture. It was perfectly empty most of the winter, and no one judged my aqua jogging routine. Not the worst pool in the world. But you'd never know they just had millions in taxpayer funds for a renovation. Feels dated and dirty. The tiles around the pool are often crud-infested to the point that they are slippery. Think subway tile, but even more slippery. Some staff are extremely friendly. Others seem to forget they are dealing with adults, and yell at all patrons as if they are children. The hours are weird, as others have noted. And quite often the majority of the pool will be closed off for regular swimmers to facilitate 'water walkers' or other groups. Lanes are often poorly marked and should you accidentally do laps or swim in the area that is off limits you will get chastised as if you are a small child. So don't think just because you show up during posted hours that you will actually get to swim. I'd give this free pool much higher marks if it was cleaner, better maintained,and had hours and lane restrictions that made sense. But it doesn't. Huge waste of government resources. It's a one story building on some of the most expensive real estate in the world. The city should redevelop but allowing mixed use condos above, and a first rate world class swim facility in place of what is there now. read more
