Nauvoo Temple House Hotel (formerly Woodruff Hotel). Attempted to check in late after the Big Baldridge & Bonfire 2024 @ Nauvoo, IL. This. hotel. has. no. lobby. All I saw was this sign and got super confused, wandering around, trying several of the doors. Ended up heading out to another hotel. Front desk said I was sent an "email or text message" that day with instructions to check in at a different location. I checked my spam folder and nothing. I was actively checking emails & texts that day- nothing received. I spoke to the hotel later in the night who suggested I walk around, in the dark, in an unfamiliar town despite knowing my companion with whom I am traveling has a physical disability. Hotels.com has been excellent- advocating for me, calling the hotel for approval for a full refund. It was a Saturday, and front desk said she would pass the request to her manager who will review on Monday. Fine. Monday came, and hotels.com informs me they made several attempts to work with management who declined to refund anything. They can keep the $147+ hotel fee, but is it worth the bad review? I have mixed feelings. This place just doesnt go the bit extra to make your stay comfortable. The only positive and reason for 2 stars is that the room was clean....enough. First of all the main door to this building does not lock and there is no staff/main lobby in this building. You check inn down the street. Secondly we had a microwave located right outside of our door in the hallway. We were awoken early both mornings from people congregating outside our door to use the microwave and from the "ding" of the microwave. Hallway noise was unbelievably loud. The soap provided was liken to pure lye soap. Harsh. Electric outlet was only available on one side of the bed. Why they dont have lamps with electric outlets at the base on the nightstands is unexplainable in this age of electronics and needed for C pap machines. The artwork is cheap and dated. No phone in room to easily contact the front desk. The kicker? A sign informing you to go next door (only until 7pm) in the case of inclement weather. After 7pm go several blocks down the street to the main building! What? A tornado is coming so go outside? I would not recommend, unless you can get a better price. Like I said. Old building located in the middle of town close to everything. It was sufficient for our needs. Stayed in room 304 - three double beds and a rollaway which we didn't use. A small fridge and adequate facilities. Nothing fancy. Wi-Fi worked well. Beds were comfortable. Floor is uneven. No ice machine. Check-in process was not communicated well. You have to check in at a different location. Then we were given the wrong directions and the desk clerk had never been to the other locations. There was a small microwave in the 2nd floor hallway. My family of 7 stayed in the three bedroom family suite (room 207) for a three night stay. We found the suite to be very comfortable, with views of the temple from every room. It was also clean and quiet. The beds were comfortable, the hot water never runs out, and the shower has great pressure. It is also within walking distance from everything, and right across the street from the free parking garage. I have absolutely no complaints. We had a wonderful stay at the Woodruff Hotel and would definitely stay there again. read more

This is the most expensive hotel in town. And it may not be worth it to you. Here's my blunt review. We stayed in room 207, the 3 room suite on the second floor. It included a living room with two large couches, high ceilings, a small kitchen area and a mini fridge. It also had a writing desk. First glance, it was very impressive. Second glance, some serious work needs to be done. Pros: Number 1 attribute of this hotel is the proximity to the temple. There are views from each of the rooms and there is a front deck where you can sit and see the town. The art work in the rooms was gorgeous. Big large prints with beautiful frames. Nice to have a small kitchen area and fridge. Especially considering how hot it was - we filled it with pop and bottles of water. We got a big Styrofoam cooler for ice. The beds/rooms were really comfortable. Fluffy, good pillows, big bedrooms, nice bed frames, dresers, etc . The ceilings were high and spacious. The AC worked amazingly well and was such a reprieve after 96 degree temperature days of 93% humidity! Cons: No cleaning checks the whole time we were there. One time a lady asked if we needed towels and gave us garbage can liners TO CHANGE OURSELVES. The carpet was clearly not vacuumed. There was white particles and leaves on the floor when we first walked in. Bathrooms were a bit tired and floor needed to be replaced. Toilets didn't flush very well. Some of the bed were rumpled -- it led me to believe someone had checked in but not liked it and then checked out or maybe a worker was taking a rest on the bed between fake cleaning. Because it was hard to believe the cleaning crew would miss things like vacuuming and making a bed. Flies were everywhere. There was a large gap in the door for the balcony at the bottom of the frame. I'm sure this let out some AC as well. No table or family area. Considering that this was a 3 bedroom family suite, this is pretty silly. At nicer hotels, they usually have a water/ice station. Even the Hotel Nauvoo, the kitchy awfully decorated place down the street, had a cooler filled with ice that you could grab. No check in desk. We went to the wrong building first (even though it said WOODRUFF HOTEL on the front of it) and then went into the gift shop. I finally found someone and asked where we should check in and she said they had moved the sign, but we could check in at the cashier for the gift shop. A pretty basic rule for a hotel is have a clear check in place. The price for the hotel per night was steep. The owners don't seem to understand the hospitality arena or good customer service yet they charge as if they do. I get that this is a small town and that things during the pageant get crazy. But there are some simple, basic ways to improve on this hotel and I hope that by the next time we come, it will be better. Some tips if you stay here: Go to Casey's for pizza one night. Order ahead of time. Get the breadsticks. :) Go to Grandpa John's for breakfast -- pick four items for 6.99. Service won't be great, but it's good breakfast food. Definitely stop at fudge factory -- super yummy. Go to Annie's custard for a late night treat. Open til 10 pm. Be prepared to be frustrated with the wifi and the intermittent cell phone coverage. You almost need walkie talkies if you want to stay in contact with your family. The wifi is spotty and goes off and on during the day. read more

Do not stay here if you have medical conditions that prohibit you from climbing 3 floors with luggage. The beds are uncomfortable and the service is fair. Also, the temperature unit in rooms do not work. Ugh, and not economical. The one star is that it has a view of the Nauvoo temple. read more

This is the best place to stay in town. I stayed here with my wife and daughter and we all had a great time. The town is unique, one of a kind in America, and the Woodruff Hotel is the crown jewel. The staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms are clean, clean, clean. We are so lucky to have found this place, and we will be staying there again soon. read more

My family and I stayed at the Woodruff Hotel in the end of March of 2018 as part of an LDS Church history excursion we've talked about doing for years. The morning after our stay, we went to the adjoining store, the Nauvoo Mercantile, which is also owned and operated by Matt Kennedy, the owner of the hotel. At the store, I spent a good deal of time talking with Matt regarding his store, and about the Book of Mormon in particular, of which we both have a keen interest. My wife spotted a beautiful picture of the Nauvoo Temple behind the register and thought it would look great in our home. we purchased a copy for approximately $200 and set up shipment of the print to our home in California, so we wouldn't risk bending it traveling with it on a plane. Matt gave me his email address so I could communicate more with him about some of the topics we had been discussing during my visit. After arriving home, we anxiously awaited the arrival of the print. But it never came. I assumed it either slipped his mind to ship it, or maybe even got lost, so I sent an email to the address I had been given by Matt himself. This was about 2 weeks after our purchasing the print. I never received a response. I tried again with no response. Finally I looked up the phone number for the store and tried calling. I spoke with someone I believe was named Jenny, who was some kind of manager. I explained my situation and asked if she would let Matt know I was trying to get in touch with him about a missing print that I had already paid for. She assured me she would give him the message and that I would hear back soon. No response at all. I tried again a couple of weeks later and spoke with a receptionist by the name of Sicily (sp?) and relayed the same info as well as my frustration with being ignored. She very apologetically said she would get the message to Matt, and that he would get back with me. Unsurprisingly it didn't ever happen. This was 2 months ago. I have finally reached the end of my patience. I seem to have no recourse other than to let as many people know about my experience with Matt and his store as possible. I do not leave negative reviews. In fact this is my first. I am extremely disappointed in Matt, not so much for the $200 he owes me, but at the contempt he has shown by ignoring my repeated requests. Although I always try to give the benefit of the doubt to everybody, I have a hard time believing he has not received my messages or emails. HE HIMSELF was the one who gave me his email, and I read it back to him to verify it. His employees repeatedly told me they would give him my messages. I am at the end of my options here. Matt took my $200. But even more frustrating has been his refusal to even communicate with me. I had hoped after meeting him that he placed a higher value on integrity than a mere $200. This hotel is nice because of how close it is to the temple as well as other places to eat. The suites are huge and it has a nice old nauvoo look. No table to eat on which was a little annoying and the wifi wasn't very good. But it was a pretty good place. I thought the beds were pretty average hotel beds and the rooms were clean. Everyone say that we went out to do some site seeing we came back to a clean and vacuumed room with fresh towels. Would recommend staying here. read more

You guys! This hotel is definitely one of the best in Nauvoo! Here's why: First off, the suites are HUGE! They have very high ceilings, nice furniture, and wonderful views of the scenic Nauvoo temple. The price isn't too bad either. I would expect to pay much more for what you get. Everything in Nauvoo is within walking distance. The staff is very friendly. As soon as we walked in, the man at the front desk greeted us warmly. Later on, we needed additional sheets, towels, and blankets. Even though the downstairs was closed, we just called the staff and they brought some right up to us! The only complaint I have is about the room service. We thought that someone would come up and freshen up our room during the day. You know, empty garbages, clean the bathroom, something. But nope, we were wrong! We asked them and they said that their policy is to let you be until you say something. So we let them know we'd at least like out garbages taken out. However, they never did it! They even came up to our room to do it, but when we returned later, the garbages were still full. Hmmmm weird. I booked a room for 3 nights and they charge you half of it upfront, which I guess is ok, but then when I needed to cancel (we had to change our dates) they said, "we do not refund the cards, we mail out a check" well that was ok, but it's been since March 29th and I still don't have my check, I've called 5 times in the last 2 months, and they assured every time it's in the mail and then when they told me a total it was minus a $35 cancellation fee!!!!! Which is ridiculous since it was the first time someone ever said anything about it, and it's not on their website. They then said, "it's in the confirmation email" but that's after I booked it, so how would I have even known that!!! I have been so patient and been waiting for days to speak to a manager with no success, I've been so kind, unlike the people I've talked to, it's been such a long hard process and I'm still out a lot of money!!! read more

The service at the Woodruff Hotel is terrible. I attempted to book the hotel's event gallery for my wedding reception and a stay. I called several times to book, each time they were too busy to book me, said they would call me back and never did. The staff was totally unaccommodating and unapologetic even when they were completely at fault. For example I was given two different price quotes for the cost of renting the event room. When I called again to complain because I was double charged, the manager did not even apologize, only gave me a refund and said that I would need to take my business elsewhere. Decent hotel in two historical buildings, rooms are modern. Large room sizes available, we got a room that sleeps 8, which was perfect for my husband and I and our 5 kids. Dehumidifier in bathroom was a nice touch. Staff was very helpful in getting us a room on the lower level since we can't do stairs, and there are no elevators due to age of buildings. No food at hotel, but a couple of restaurants in walking distance. Couple of negatives: beds not very comfortable, sleeper sofa did not have any sheets. Despite this, would probably stay again because of room size, which is hard to find. read more

We had been saving and planning for this trip for years.We saw the website for this hotel it showed clean rooms with a couple standing out on a balcony with an incredible view. We had to pay half the full price of full bill up front then sixty days later we had to pay the rest. It was nonrefundable When we got there we were given a room with a broken bed with used paint cans supporting it. Our balcony had sign on it saying it was too dangerous to go out on, not to mentioned used caulk guns out on the balcony. On the ceiling there was a fully exposed fire sprinkler system. There was an old dresser in the room that had an iron print on it. We were eventually moved to a dirty but tolerable room for the of our stay. We had to ask for things like toilet paper and clean towels.In the hallway there was part of a floor board missing and an electrical switch plate that had a missing a switch.We heard that the Hotel owed the building next door and it was for wedding party's and reunions. read more
