What better way to enjoy a summers evening than kick back by the river with a glass of wine or a pint of the cold stuff? I've found Kingston to be a little hit-and-miss when it comes to bars and pubs but Woodys is the perfect spot for those long warm summer evenings us Londoners like to take advantage of. We visited for a friend's birthday last month as she'd spotted the pub on her jogging route and we were all smitten by its charm. Inside is a mish-mash of furniture with arm chairs, kitchen chairs, dining chairs and an old piano sitting in the corner. They even have a box of toys for the kids (although the Mr Potato Head may attract the likes of me also) so mums and dads can relax while the kiddies play. The prices were reasonable and while I hit the wine menu many of my chums opted for their cider. The food coming out of the kitchen looked tasty although we didn't eat there, and the staff were extremely friendly and attentive. The whole place has a lovely vibe and indeed, as the manager says, it feels like an extension of your living room. If you're out and about in Kingston and fancy a beverage head over to Woodys for a lovely chilled out vibe...and perhaps a bit of play time with Mr Potato Head. read more

Woody's is an ok bar in Kingston, its nice that its one of the last of the independents, but there is a number of things wrong that serious deride from the experience. The entire bar decor could be described as shaby sheik run amok. The crowd is an odd crossbreed of hipsters and wanna be yacht club members (60+). Its not a great place to go and have to good of a time, you might disturb the status quo. Its obviously the victim of wanna be middle class gentrification, and also don't go hungry, you won't find more than a bag of crisps. The location is great, and at least they have a clean toilet. Don't disturb the blonde bald dragon (barkeep) and keep to the status quo (tightpants and bangs over your eyes) and you might just fit in nicely at Woody's. read more

Maybe I've been going to the wrong restaurants in the UK, but for some reason I had been let down by one disappointing risotto after another, even from Italian restaurants. Feeling a moment of hysteria on a sunny but cold autumnal Saturday lunchtime sitting by the river Thames, I decided the mushroom and Jerusalem artichoke risotto would be the revitalising meal I much needed. The food took an incredibly long time to arrive, but by golly it was the best risotto I have had in this country and well worth the wait. The consistency was just right, and every mouthful was packed with flavours, down to the last spoonful. I am amused that a pub has become my go-to place for fulfilling my risotto yearning, but at least Woody's is set in a marvelous location for eating and drinking while watching the world go by. The ingredients are locally sourced so the menu changes with the season. There is also plenty of choice for drinks on tap and it was an apparent favourite for some of the locals too. The best part about this place is the location. There is a lot of outside seating, which is wonderful. The benches are painted all different colours and the decor inside is kooky. It's retro meets Cath Kidston. However, the drinks are way overpriced! You can get a bottle of Prosecco here for about £21 yet if you go next door, you can get it for under £15. It's because of the location, I guess. It's great here of a summers evening, but bring lots of money, you'll need it. read more

Woody's has such a relaxed ambiance, and it's great for a date or to unwind with friends. The decor and furniture are so unique and give off a nice vibe. The location is also ideal as it's right on the Thames. A larger selection of wine and cocktails would make this place even more great. read more

This is a fantastic place that my friends and I quite often visit for lunch. Located on the river, the views are amazing and it's a popular, buzzing little bar when the sun comes out. They do a great lunch menu and unlike some other places, good size portions for £5! Recommend the homous and vegetable wrap. read more

After a long day in Kingston, Woody's proved to be a nice place to relax with friends for drinks, especially when we could sit outside with a riverview. We were initially not looking to eat, but their variety Boards caught our eye and provided a nice array of appetizers and light fare for the group. The Boards and overall atmosphere provided a welcome accent to an evening of drinks and conversation amongst friends. read more

The quality of the food is fantastic as you look out at the river, generous portions and the quiz night is a break form the city. The slow flowing river, ith copious swans, helps you forget the stress of the city. A real place to relax and read the papers, be prepared for a long visit. The chef deserves a medal for his cakes. The only gripe is the young bar staff more concerned with being trendy than serving the good selection of beers, and wide wine list. read more

Such a lovely place. Right by the riverside with a lot of picnic benches to sit outside. The inside of the place is very unique, with seats made out of old bathtubs, tables made from old car bonnets and a random collection of old chairs. Great selection of drinks and lovely food menu too! Also a lot of smaller snacks available like cakes and pretzels. Really friendly staff and an all round lovely environment! Looking round the internet for somewhere different to eat on a day in Kingston than the same old chains, I spotted the website for Woody's. It looked like it had food that was a little different, and it promised to be kid-friendly. Plus, the little photos looked good. When we arrived, I was, on the instant, disappointed. At first glance, it looked a scruffy old place. But then I realised what I was looking at. Character! Literally so. Was it shabby chic? Maybe. All the chairs and tables were odd. They looked reclaimed, even. Some chairs had their stuffing sticking out through little tears. But there was a sofa made out of half a bathtub, a piano, piles of magazines and unusual decor. Its oddness hadn't come across on the website. We sat and chose our meal from filthy crumpled paper menus (not good). But the staff were pleasant and our little boy was made welcome and allowed to sit and play the piano. When the food arrived, yes, the portions were enormous. And everything really did seem to be home-made. I had a lovely pasta. My wife had their burger. We had sides of garlic bread, more of their big chips and a bowl of the most enormous and fabulous onion rings. I thought mine was excellent. My wife, however, felt her burger was a touch too juicy. Half way through, what she held in her hands was rather soggy, so she left it. We'd certainly return though. I would say it seemed like a place for the younger, or trendier generation. My wife and I are just over and just under 40. But there were a mix of diners, though. Of all ages, actually. But the younger (student?) types looked most comfortable there. So, yes. I was won over by their purposefully stylish shabby decor, but put off a little by their shabby menus. Then I was fairly impressed with their food, and definitely impressed with their portion size. read more

i walked passed woody's before christmas with my girlfriend, the decor looked rather odd for what i thought to just be an average bar on the river. we went for a drink just before new years and LOVED it!!! every chair is different and the manager insisted we made ourselves at home in the huge swinger chairs by the fireplace. beer choice for me was excellent and by the looks of it my girlfriend enjoyed her bottle of wine! cake was also served over the bar to and so we enjoyed a few slices! we now go every weekend and bring friends to meet the bar staff which we now consider as friends. it is by far my favourite place to go (dare i say it - in the whole of london!) and im currently organising my birthday party to be held at woody's, dom the manager is happy to shut off half the pub just for my party free of charge! i love woody's and would recommend it anyone, but you really need to go down and see to believe it! read more
