Hire a Maid

I've used Hire a Maid for over 3 years now on a recommendation of a friend-of-a-friend and I…read morecouldn't be happier with the service. The pricing model is a bit odd at first, but it works really well as you only get the parts of your house cleaned that you want. When they come and do the quote they charge you per room - $X per bedrom, $X for the kitchen, $X for dusting etc etc. So we didn't get any bedrooms or dusting as the house is relatively new which keeps the costs down. Fantastic idea. They use all their own products, and the cleaners are excellent. Good attention to detail, consistent cleaning and happy to be flexible and do extra cleaning if requested or to swap cleaning one thing for the other (without a price change). Really reliable, cost effective, professional and an excellent cleaning service (of course). Highly recommend!

According to them it usually takes one day for the funds to appear in their account, so let's say nine days before clean. There was no further communication from Hire a Maid so I naturally assumed that the cleaning slot was confirmed. However, no one turned up on the day. I rang, I emailed. No response (it was a Sunday). On Monday following I received an email saying that the cleaners had not been booked in as they had not received a screenshot of the payment. What the heck? They had received the payment! So clearly the payment sat in their account for about nine days but that was not sufficient to confirm the job, nor did they think to ring or email me to confirm it. I have since received a full refund but sadly, no apology. Will not make this mistake again.

Gone is the 70s country style, replaced with a fabulously sleek, stylish, modern new version. Ming of Fabulous Kitchens came highly recommended and that's a sentiment shared by me. We had the vision, he fine tuned it for us and delivered the goods. The beauty about Fabulous Kitchens is that they can provide everything from cabinetry to benchtops which made the whole process so easy for us. Once we settled on our design Ming invited us to their East Tamaki showroom to choose our finishes or at least take a few samples home. Final touches to the plan sorted in the lead up to demolition day, it really was happening. We made sure the BBQ gas bottle was filled as that's where our meals were cooked during the six weeks the project took to complete.

Our most recent purchase from here were two of their stunning deck chairs in a bold striped fabric. They are sturdy, comfortable and have weathered outside very well so far. The price was reasonable for such a wonderful product and we haven't regretted them one bit. It's a great place to come for gifts as they stock wonderful cushions, lots of famous designer classics and amazing vases. If you come to Newmarket often and still haven't visited Madder and Rouge it really is worth the trip you won't be disappointed.

I come down for a look every once and a while and have picked up the odd item, the best time to come is during their sales. At one point they had tables and benches made from railway tracks from Mumbai India and there is a lot of other beautiful wooden furniture for sale here. In particular the wooden mangers are incredible. In addition to the furniture there is a great selection of home decor items, lanterns, mirrors, heavy stone candle pillars, vases and other vessels in striking colours, mostly stones or ceramics. There is a small selection of bedding and cushions and rugs and because the entire store is set up like a show room, you get visual interior design advice. If you still need more assistance, Living Edge also offer interior services and staging for show rooms. With the upholstered furniture, you select your fabrics and it is made for you.

I've done up a couple of houses and this is the place I ended up buying from despite covering all the bases and checking out everywhere else first. Best solutions are closest to home and all that. They specialise in vinyl flooring and however unfashionable that may sound in these days of snap-together wood veneer boards and imported tiles, it's still a damn practical solution that is durable beyond the first year, won't smash everything you drop on it or freeze your feet in the colder months. The vinyls they have here (and most are on the roll, in the store so you can buy and have it delivered the next day) are up to the minute designs and nothing like your nana's kitchen floor. You can get vinyl that looks like wood in the form of parquetry, linear boards or whatever and although they sound tacky, they actually look pretty good. There's classic chequerboard styles, flecks, marbled effects, European style "tiled" designs, you name it. The staff are helpful and delivery prompt, and they'll even install it for you at an extremely competitive price. If in doubt about using vinyl, come in here and they'll change your mind. Good for the budget too.

The reasons for this are that they are super helpful, prices are reasonable, and the owner is happy to do things like drop 16 metres of green carpet off to you at 7am on a Monday morning even though their delivery service doesn't run then, so he brings it himself in his own car. That is service. I'm sure they would be just as helpful if you were looking for flooring for your home or workplace. The one thing to be mindful of is that they are not open on weekends so you need to go there on weekdays, although I'm sure if this was really not possible, you could view by appointment early morning or in the evening.
