This feels like a well kept secret, since I could freely browse many galleries to myself on a Sunday afternoon with little to no competition for foot traffic or viewing angles in galleries and studios, unlike what may happen at a downtown location like Torpedo Arts Factory on a Sunday. The structure seems confusing and closed off at first. No entrances available directly from parking lots other than walkways between buildings to the inner courtyard, where covered walkways and porticos with sandwich boards and little lit open signs in windows invite you to step inside and explore more. There is an organization to it all- by building numbers labeled on white squares with black numbers seen across from the courtyard and on each studio door, but on a first visit, give yourself 1-2hrs to simply explore. I actually came twice in the same weekend. First for a Saturday evening free concert with the Los Teximaniacs under the tent and on the lawn of the courtyard, and then the next day to browse the open galleries and Lucy Burns Museum, which also happened to be another music event for an acoustic duo that was ticketed and happening above one of the larger galleries. It's an easy place to be on a rainy day, wandering in and out of studios for visual sparks and wonderment. It feels embracing of all art levels with a combination of professionals, hobbiests, and students taking classes. A delight to explore!

A wonderful theater venue in the DMV! Only frustration is the lack of signage on campus, which made it hard to find the theater. Other than that, extremely cool space!

I LOVE the Workhouse Arts Center. I started taking pottery classes a year ago and am am hooked for life. The space is phenomenal -- open, light, welcoming. Each class includes a cubby for storing your tools and clay as well as access to Open Studio time to continue creating outside of class. The instructors are talented and folks are incredibly kind, supportive, and generous with their time. It's a wonderful community. I highly recommend signing up for a class - you might find (or rediscover) your next passion!

Such a gem. Signed up for Bread 101 with Chef Kathleen Linton. I rarely go for reviews but it was such a thrilling class to learn so much from an expert. I got lucky because I am an extreme beginner and was surrounded by a class of enthusiasts. Paired up with very accomdating group and took away valuable lessons (albiet forgot the immense amount of lessons..) through the two day course.. in addition to loaves of bread one cannot devour alone. It wasn't until coming home after the blur of the classes and eating even more did I realize how good of a deal it was. Looking forward to returning for classes with kids and friends. Highly recommend!

The Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia is a great place for a fun date night. We had a great time seeing beautiful artwork and learning how to make healthy hand-crafted cocktails! The 1910 Lorton Prison that was developed to help solve unsanitary conditions of Washington DC Jail & Workhouse is now an impressive art center which is home to over 100 local artists. You can find a huge collection of affordable art here! The Workhouse Arts Center also offers plenty of classes that provide fun date experiences. We took the "Hand-Crafted Mixologist" class and learned how to make Immune Booster Cocktails & Tonics. The class consisted of mostly couples in a friendly environment. We plan to take more classes at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia and hope to see you there!

Went to the free summer Friday night concert with my family. It was fun, plenty, of space for kids to play, and drinks for purchase.

ESIO - Your Trading Card Game HQ…read more My friend Louis has been introducing me to the world of trading card games -- specifically Sorcery, which is surprisingly deep and addicting. This whole TCG (trading card game) culture is huge -- there are cards out there worth everything from less than a dollar to literal millions, and there's a passionate community trading, playing, and competing worldwide. Enter ESIO. This store has everything you need to dive headfirst into this rabbit hole -- card boxes, sleeves, roll-up playmats, specialty dice, and more. I came in looking for a card box to hold my first set of Sorcery cards and walked out with exactly what I needed. The selection was solid, the checkout was smooth (Apple Pay ), and they even had free dice at the counter -- nice touch. The staff was super helpful and clearly know their stuff. You can tell they're into the games and happy to get new players started. I also like that they have the more advanced accessories (premium dice, playmats, etc.) for when I decide to level up my setup. If you're into TCGs -- Sorcery, Magic, Pokémon, you name it -- or if you're just curious and looking to start, ESIO is the perfect place to get your gear and connect with people who share the same passion. I'm excited to keep building my collection and my skills -- and this is definitely where I'll come back for supplies.

Everyone knows that I don't give out five starts very often. A business must go way over and beyond…read moremy expectations to get all five! I have been to several paint nights and have even left in tears from one of those... that was not the case with Creative Mankind. This company travels around to different venues and offers a variety of painting options. I met up with a group of friends and we painted a Mardi Gras themed picture. Right off the bat I knew it was going to be an awesome experience. We were greeted with upbeat music and beads to celebrate the occasion. Our instructor really put a lot of thought and passion into the class ahead of time. Laying on the canvas was a template of the mask we needed to transfer to our painting. She let us know that we could "go rogue" and change up the colors and skip the sketching parts but I am way not that talented! She had one completed painting on an easel and another blank canvas for demonstration up on an elevated easel. It was visible to everyone in the room without having to stand up. She was extremely accommodating as far as time given for each step, which I really appreciated! It was fun how she would tell us how many songs she would play for us to finish each step... "okay you have two songs to do this step!" There was an assistant who walked around and offered advice and guidance which was helpful. Creative Mankind had partnered with a restaurant that offered drink specials and happy hour pricing for apps! The restaurant provided a dedicated server to us which was a nice touch. And huzzah... my painting actually looked a lot like the sample! Which for me is a huge deal because I am really not artistic or creative with paint. We were all encouraged along the way and our confidence was bolstered by telling us that everyone is an artist but we express our artistry in different ways. I was with a party of six and all of our paintings turned out different and reflected our personalities. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Creative Mankind for any event they host. They also do private parties!

For our last trip in July, I was tasked with coordinating the fun team activity and stumbled upon Creative Mankind. I was considering a couple other options, but when I started communicating with Staci (the owner and host), there was really no question that this was the activity (painting class) I wanted to plan for my team. She was so nice, so patient, and super accommodating in every way possible. She even found the most perfect venue to hold our team event (Lyon Hall). She provided all supplies, ensured the ambiance was great and lively, and her instruction was so thorough! She guided us -ever so patiently- every step of the way. We had so much fun! I would, 100% recommend Creative Mankind for your next work team event!!

I took a class here in the spring and bought all the supplies on the list to complete the class…read more Except for the soldering iron which I already owned, I bought all the supplies from the VA Stained Glass Company and it came to under $600, including glass. The class was $100 and spread out across 8 weeks, with one assignment per week. I ended up completing my first project within that time span, and I was well-supported to have my questions answered in class or received help with the tricky parts -- of course I took on the hardest beginner template (which every shopkeeper warned me against) because I'm a creative masochist. I am glad I went for the extra challenge because I really like the piece I made. Finally, I'll sign up for the class again when I am ready to make my next piece. I like how the pace kept me accountable, but didn't rush me, and for $100 having a mentor like Diane and her staff to go speak to each week is an incredible resource. I feel incredibly grateful that amazon hasn't wiped out this community resource, and I marvel at her dedication to stained and fused glass and her prowess and patience at sharing it with the community. Note regarding buying supplies: Yeah sure, I am a young generation internet wizard but being a fan of open source and the ways of Stallman (who was right) I DID NOT purchase resources online -- I kept the profits local and focused at this gem of a resource to our community, which means I bought EVERYTHING from VA Stained Glass. If you are looking at taking a class with Diane, and need to buy supplies, you should DO the same. Buy directly from her for all of the reasons I've listed here and allow me to re-iterate just what a priceless resource VA Stained Glass is for our community.

My wife and I took the "Introduction to Stained Glass" class, so we could have a chance to learn…read morethe basics and finish a project without having to make a big investment in tools, etc. (definitely worth it). It was so much fun we decided to take the plunge and took the "Beginning Stained Glass" class too! We're very pleased with how our projects turned out, and now, with the detailed, hands-on (and patient!) instruction we've gotten, we have the confidence to take on some projects on our own. To anyone who's thought about trying their hand at stained glass, but feels a little intimidated by it, let me tell you that it's not nearly as difficult as you might think. In fact, it's actually pretty easy. And I can confidently recommend coming to the Virginia Stained Glass Company to get some instruction. Our experience was wonderful, with all of the staff, the other people in our classes, and the other customers who had bought studio time and were coming in just to work on their projects (I think the fact that people are buying time to work here on stuff they could just as easily do at home says a lot). The atmosphere was always relaxed and friendly, and I really enjoyed it.
