I took a hike with my little man to see the pine trees lined up and then the next morning took my daughter the short way. The kids loved the lake and my mom loved the fishing. The power plant across the lake lights up pretty but the constant hum coming from it is a bit strange. All and all it was a nice little trip and I'm looking forward to going back. I didn't get a chance to go on the island and I'd really like to go back to do that trail.

So, after Thanksgiving, I was already in East TX and decided to drive to the park to check it out. Checkin was easy at the ranger headquarters. I went inside to purchase a magnet. Their stickers selection was limited and the designs were unappealing. My first impression with the creek lake that it was very beautiful and reminded me of Lake Catherine State Park in Arkansas. The beach portion doesn't allow dogs, so I just viewed it from the park. There's a total of three trails. I found one, but not the other. I searched high and low to find it, but was unsuccessful. I ended up going on the Island Trail. The view of the power plant was nice. The plant was loud. The Island trail was a smooth hike. The path is covered in pine needles and if you look closely, you can find armadillos, rabbits, and field mice. Now the camping portion was very crowded and the sites were close to each other. I didn't see any private sites. It reminded me of Blanco State Park; where you're just close enough to your neighbors where you can see and hear them. How fun! This park isn't worth coming back to explore. I didn't like it much.

Note the layout of the Great State of Texas on the ground at the center. The first marker reads, "This park is dedicated to and named for John Wood. State highway commissioner of Texas in recognition of outstanding public service. John Wood could have stumbled and fallen but he did not stumble and he did not fall. He is indeed a friend of all of the people of Texas. Erected by John Wood's friends in Kilgore. 1936." The second marker, "The Wood Park Sesquicentennial Project is dedicated to 'Kilgore the Oil Capitol of the World' and to the giant East Texas Oil field. The discovery well was drilled on October 5, 1930. A total of 32,000 wells were drilled in this five county area, with 1,100 in the Kilgore city limits. This field has produced to date a total of four billion, eight hundred seventy-eight million, three hundred eight-four thousand and thirty eight barrels of crude oil. Mobil Oil Company built the one-third size pumping unit. David Julian hand built the 28 foot derrick, the project including fence and signs as required by the Texas Railroad Commission. The entire project is an exact replica of the forrest of derricks that at one time darkened our skyline." The third marker, "Oil city of the world. Kilgore. Founded 1872 with coming of the I.G.N. Railroad, named for site donor, a Confederate Colonel Constantine B. Kilgore, State Senator and U.S. Congressman. Geographical center of huge east Texas oil field. I didn't cover the entire trail when I was there. There are maps in multiple places showing you where this trail goes. One map is next to a dog park and parking lot, the other is next to another parking lot. The trail is paved and flat where I ran, other parts take you under a bridge and through some areas with lots of trees. I definitely enjoyed my morning runs here, a very good place for runners and walkers to go in this city!!

It's a really nice community park with plenty of shade and a steady breeze that kept it surprisingly comfortable, even in the middle of July. One of my favorite parts was seeing how many people were out enjoying it. There were people walking with family, riding bikes, taking their dogs to the dog park, and just getting outside. I always like finding parks that are clearly well-used by the local community. The trail itself is on the shorter side, but it's well maintained and has exercise stations scattered along the route if you want to turn your walk or run into more of a workout. I didn't use them this time, but it's a nice feature. The trailhead also has a dog park and even a dog washing station, which looked like a great setup for pet owners. If you're in the area and looking for a pleasant place to get some exercise or just enjoy some time outside, I'd definitely recommend stopping by.

I boarded my horses at this facility under a self-care arrangement, where I personally handled all…read moreof their feeding and care. For the first several months, things went smoothly. However, during my final month there, the owner began doing the feeding himself for other boarders, and that's when serious issues started. While driving a four-wheeler around with open buckets of feed, portions of that feed were dropped right outside my horses' pens. Both of my horses have genetic muscle disorders and are highly sensitive to high-sugar, high-starch, and gluten-containing feeds. Even small amounts can make them sick. After this change in routine, my mare colicked twice in two weeks. When I tried to address these concerns calmly, the environment became increasingly uncomfortable. From the start, I was treated poorly -- the owner openly told others not to like me -- and it only worsened when I advocated for my horses' dietary needs. To make matters worse, when I left the property, I was accused of taking a water trough that I had originally brought with me. Thankfully, several people could confirm that it belonged to me. If your horses have any medical or dietary sensitivities, or if you prefer a respectful, drama-free environment, I would be cautious about boarding here. Always put every instruction and agreement in writing and keep records of your own equipment and feed.
