How do I know that Mardi Gras was a success? I followed the celebration on WWOZ, New Orleans' "Guardian of the Groove." Throughout the 2025 Carnival season, as I have in past years, I listened to live performances and music played from WWOZ's vast archive, and viewed video and photos from the city's parades and other celebrations. And I'm able to enjoy the New Orleans vibe year round, because, since 1980, WWOZ has hosted and presented the city's music, from classic to current, and the station streams its daily programming on its website, providing the world a handy connection to the place. And wwoz.org hosts a two-week archive of shows, calendars of musical and other community events, and its Flickr archive of photos from Jazz Fest, the Satchmo SummerFest, and more. How valuable is WWOZ? In their book, "Up From the Cradle of Jazz: New Orleans Music Since World War II", authors Jason Berry, Jonathan Foose and Tad Jones refer to the station as "...a kaleidoscope of voices, rich in oral imagery -- jazzmen, composers, Cajun fiddlers, parades, grand marshals, gospel artists and R&B bluesmen, writers, occasional filmmakers, historians, Mardi Gras Indians, fathers and sons and mothers and daughters of musical families." WWOZ, they say, provides "...intimacy between the musicians and listeners, immeasurably broadening the sense of place." Most of the DJs are students, with their own playlists, agendas, styles, and commentaries on things. If you don't like the style, don't touch that dial, just give them an hour or so to finish up their shift and another student DJ will be on shortly. I appreciate the fact that this station doesn't play any advertisements. Since it's a non-profit radio station associated with the educational community, they just play public service announcements reminding you about community events and safety announcements. They don't play a whole lot of local New Orleans Cajun and Zydeco, at least not as much as their main competitor, WWOZ.

He would have a van with B-97 and a honeybee emblazoned on the side parked in front of his house. To my 10 year old brain, there was nothing cooler. Once I grew up I realized there was much more to life than top 40 music. Unfortunately I had several month period where my car at work would only get B-97. I don't know if the mechanics were messing with me or what, but I learned the lyrics to every Britney Spears song there was. Now that I am an actual grown up, I rarely listen to terrestrial radio at all. In fact, I don't remember the last time I actually listened to B-97. But since it has been around so long, and the jingle is still stuck in my head, I think it deserves three stars.

(I also hate most radio "personalities." They're annoying and most of what comes out of their mouth is, at best, inane, and at worst offensively stupid. But I digress.) So, yeah.
